Description: The estate is situated in the lower Awatere Valley, Marlborough, the sunny region at the top of New Zealand's South Island. The vineyards are on a silty, stony, free-draining hillside in Dashwood. The 1999 vintage is a rich, ripe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, with a complex palate of ripe passion fruit and gooseberries. Some delicate oak also shows through. Pale straw colour, clear and bright, it maintains excellent length and a crisp clean finish. This wine is ready for drinking, or may be kept in the cellar for up to 2 years. The long, dry, hot summer was tempered by cool sea breezes, which enhanced tropical fruit flavours and superb acid balance. The grapes were harvested on the 16th April in the cool early of the morning and fermented slowly to retain freshness and flavour. 15% of the wine was fermented in French oak barriques to add more flavour. Based on nearly twenty years of growing grapes and making wine, Sherwood Estate now specialise in Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling. Sherwood Estate produce three ranges of wines the Clearwater Range, the Sherwood Estate Range and the the Stratum Range. The Clearwater range represents the very best varietal single vineyard wines from Sherwood Estate's own vineyards in Waipara. This is very much a hand crafted range both in the vineyards and winery, here meticulous care is taken to ensure that the wine produced is of the highest quality and reflects each vineyard's unique characteristics or 'terroir'. The Clearwater Riesling is from selected fruit at the Whitestone and Weka Creek Vineyards in Waipara. The fruit was harvested in excellent condition and selecting only the free run juice, the Riesling was cool fermented for 21 days. After an extended yeast lees contact the wine was light fined and filtered prior to bottling. This Riesling displays both delicacy and finesse. The aroma follows through into the well balanced, crisp and rounded palate while the wine is showing good concentration of tangy lime fruit character offset by touches of honey while it finishes in an off-dry style.
