Natural influences such as free draining coarse silt soils and sheltered aspects, as well as careful clone selection and vine management combine to produce intensely flavoured well ripened fruit. Description: Fruit for this wine was sourced from three locations in the Isolation vineyards.Early experiments with normal yields and lots of new oak were soon abandoned. This is made from the Mendoza clone, yielding 1.5 tons/acre with 30% new oak. A highly selective approach to this wine has produced an opulent Chardonnay from difficult vintage conditions. Description: The vineyards are located on the Mount Cass Road and were planted in 1982, as the then owners and developers believed that the terroir was simial to the Marlborough region. However, there was an added benefit, the effect the Teviotdale Hills and Mount Cass have in protecting the vineyards from the cool easterly sea breezes. The Mount Cass Glenray Reserve is only produced from selected clones, planting regimes and winemaking selections, including barrel fermentation with 10 months on lees. This has produced a softer style wine full of complex, strong flavours. Description: The cool climate of the Russian River Valley contributes to Simi's Reserve Chardonnay. The influence of the Pacific Ocean gives the Russian River Valley a long, extended and very moderate growing season. The location of Simi's Goldfields vineyard is perfectly situated within the heart of the Russian River Valley, close enough to the coast the get the benefits of the cool fog, and inland enough to ensure the vineyard will get the degree days that allow the Chardonnay to ripen to perfection every vintage. When Simi planted the Goldfields Vineyard in 1989, Simi opted for field selections rather than the heat-treated clones that make up most post-phylloxera Chardonnay vineyards. The Simi team took cuttings from some of the oldest and best Chardonnay vineyards in California choosing them for the diversity of flavors they would contribute to the wine. Golden straw colour and sandalwood and brown spice aromas, this wine has lemon and other citrus flavors that mingle with the essence of ripe red apple and well-integrated oak. Description: Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific coast. Three Jacks Vineyard is a small seven-acre property jointly owned by Joe and Steve Dutton. The Duttons refer to the vineyard as Triple J-S vineyard. We began writing JJJ’s on each barrel, and soon the winery workers began calling the wine Three Jacks, and the name stuck. The vineyard is planted with four very distinctive Chardonnay clonal selections: the Raffo and Rued Chardonnay field selections, Dijon Clone 96 and UC Davis Clone 15. Each clone is picked and fermented separately and only the best barrels from each lot are blended to make the final bottling. This cool vineyard site in the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley produces Chardonnay with remarkable personality. Old Wente and Dijon Clones greatly inspire the wine’s floral bouquet and flamboyant fruit qualities. The 1997 Le Rêve is the sixth in a highly distinguished line of Blanc de Blancs. Its predecessors have repeatedly been rated The best Sparkling Wine in America . This current release is a great successor to these wines and exemplifies the best of our estate-grown chardonnay. This is a luscious wine, round and full-bodied with an exceedingly long finish. The 1997 has aromas of tropical fruit and floral notes of Freesia and honeysuckle. Components of toast, cream and citrus enhance these scents of fruits and flowers creating rich body and complex flavors. The tiny bubbles create a silky texture. The 1997 vintage was a great classic in Carneros. The nights were exceptionally cool followed by foggy mornings and sunny breezy days. A very long ripening period allowed time for fruit flavor development which coalesced in a final sparkling wine of power and elegance. The blend of the 1997 Le Rêve is 100% chardonnay selected from our six different estate-grown clones. It has been aged on the yeast for over five years. The appellation is 100% Carneros, 100% 1997 and 100% estate grown. It is drinking beautifully now but will continue to age and develop for many years. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £152.99

Description: Part of Jackson Wine Estates, La Crema winery was founded in 1979 and quickly established itself as a pioneer for intensely flavoured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This wine is from the Anderson Valley known for sloping hillside benches thta are blanketed by cool fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean during the heat of the summer growing season. These moderating conditions are ideal in cultivating Pinot Noir with naturally bright acidity and delicate red cherry and cranberry fruit aromas. The Anderson Valley is Mendocino’s premier growing region for Pinot Noir and this wine used the Dijon, heirloom Martini and Pommard clones to enhance the aroma and complexity. In the vineyard fruit-thinning is undertaken to remove late flowering clusters ensuring even ripening throughout the vineyards. Next the fruit is handpicked from the cool climate vineyards and delivered to the winery in small half ton bins to protect the integrity of the fruit. Once in the winery the Pinot Noir grapes are put on to a belt delivery system with sorting table to purge damaged fruit. Here only 70% of the whole berries are selected before fermentation takes place for greater fruit expression. Next a five day, 48 degree cold soak is completed before fermentation so that it enhances the silky tannin texture. Open top fermentation with cap punch downs four times daily extracts precise colour before the wine is aged 10 months in 100% French oak barrels refines the finish. Finally the Pinot Noir is bottled unfiltered and unfined to express the pure character of this great varietal. Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse had the following comments to make about this wine: 'Exotic aromas are delicate and floral with a hint of blueberry and herbal black tea. The flavours are focused on lush dark red cherry fruit which provides an enticing plush texture. Bright acidity accented by cranberry and red cherries create a seductive fruit entry that leads to a broad lingering finish.' (6 x 75 cl) Price: £102.48
