The wines are crafted from ripe, flavourful grapes from vineyards in the Columbia Valley in eastern Washington state. These prime eastern Washington vineyards lie at the same northerly latitude as France's renowned wine regions, as well as providing more hours of grape-maturing sunlight during the growing season than in southern vineyards. The vineyards are located between two coastal mountain ranges and provide ample protection from western Washington's cool, wet weather, yielding over 300 days of sunshine and less than ten inches of rain per year. The warm, sunny days and cool nights during the growing season create ideal conditions for producing grapes with intense aromas and flavours. This mouth-filling, juicy Chardonnay is loaded with ripe, intense fruit character with tropical nuances. Malolactic fermentation and sur lie ageing contribute creaminess and a lingering finish that make this a Chardonnay to enjoy. (6 x 75 cl)

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars KARIA Chardonnay Napa Valley California
Description: Founded in 1972 by Warren and Barbara Winiarski, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars produces wines it describes as ‘classical’. The now legendary 1976 Paris Tasting at which the 1973 Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon triumphed over the cream of Bordeaux, propelled the estate into the pre-eminent position it still retains today. The Napa Valley Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from the B.R.V. and Arcadia Estate Vineyards and from select vineyards in the cool Carneros district of Napa Valley. Fruit from the Arcadia Vineyard contributes crisp acidity and a mineral core, while B.R.V. adds richness. Fruit from the Carneros properties provides the tropical fruit and spiciness that the region is known for. The predominant impression given by the wine is that of deftness and balance, with bright acidity supporting ripe fruit flavours and subtle oak tones. The Napa Valley Chardonnay exhibits beguiling aromas of light toast, white flower blossoms, essence of gala apples, pear and apricots, interwoven with hints of lemon zest, vanilla and creme brulee. The aromas carry over on the palate with tones of white peach, lemon zest, lychee nut, pear and vanilla. The wine is refreshing, light and graceful on the palate, with creamy notes on entry and a crisp, well balanced mid-palate, finishing with excellent length, spiciness, balanced oak flavours and a hint of vanilla. Bergsig Estate Chardonnay Breede River Valley RSA
Description: The Bergsig Estate has been in the Lategan family since 1843. De Wet Lategan is the sixth generation winemaker and has obtained a BSc degrees in Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch, before joining the family firm in 1990. His brothers Louis and Plum manage the vineyards. Their father Prop Lategan is still very active in the general management and promotion of the wines from his beautiful 400 Ha farm in the foothills of Bainskloof Mountain. Bergsig Estate lies at the narrow funnel-like entrance to the Breede River Valley. The regular afternoon South-easterly breezes have a moderating effect on the summer heat and ensures cool picking temperatures throughout the day. The Bergsig Estate was the first winery outside the coastal region to earn a superior award for red wine. More specifically the 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon. This encouraged Prop Lategan to plant more red varieties and today 20% of all plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot, Pinotage, Ruby Cabernet and Tinta Barocca. On the white side Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and now the very popular Gewurztraminer predominate. The modern cellar handles 4000 tons per harvest and boasts a separate wood maturation cellar. Seifried Estates OLD COACH ROAD Unoaked Chardonnay Nelson NZ
Description: Winemakers Note: Traditionally Chardonnay is made in an oaked style, however, we are often asked: what does Chardonnay as a grape variety with no oak aging taste like? This is it. The grapes were hand harvested and whole bunch pressed, cold fermented to retain crisp fruit flavours, and then a portion was inoculated for malolactic fermentation. The wine was blended and bottled in July. Tasting Note: Beautiful tropical fruit on the nose is supported by intense apple and stone fruit flavours on the palate. Fresh citrus characters are softened by a slightly buttery finish. This wine is easy drinking, with an attractive weight and body. With tastes like these, its appeal is to drink now rather than cellar too long! The Vineyards: Our Rabbit Island vineyards are situated on a wide river flat. The soil is made up of gravely sandy loam, which marks the sites of kumara beds prior to European settlement in the early 1800's. The Maori transferred and spread fine gravel and sand over the land to provide suitable soils for their kumara plantings. Scrub was burned to give ash and charcoal, which increased soil fertility and gave characteristic topsoil. This fertility is now considerably reduced with modern farming. The soils are, however, very sandy and gravely and free draining. The water table is relatively high ensuring adequate underground water. These vineyards are about 1.5 kilometres from the sea, which helps moderate summer temperature. (12 x 75 cl)

Vidal Estate Natural Ferment Chardonnay Hawke's Bay NZ
Description: Vidal Wines, founded in 1905, is one of Hawke's Bays oldest boutique wineries, and is a producer of premium quality wines that truly reflect the region and vineyards from which they were sourced. Vidal Wines gained its name from its founder, Anthony Joseph Vidal. He was 22 years old when he arrived in New Zealand from Spain in 1888. He moved North to Hawke's Bay where in 1905 he purchased a small property in Hastings. Once the stables that occupied the site were converted into a cellar, Anthony set about planting some grapevines. Thereafter, success lead to expansion with further vineyard plantings in Te Awanga and then Te Mata. Passing from family memebr to family member, the Vidal family made a decision to sell in the early 1970's and for a while the winery experienced some instability. This changed in 1976 when George Fistonich bought the winery and began to steadily restore the Vidal reputation as a quality wine producer. The 2004 growing season got underway with some uncharacteristic late spring frosts. The cool start was followed by a warm early summer, damp January and long dry autumn. Cool evening temperatures ensured a lovely fruit lift to aromas and flavours combined with a fresh acidity. Careful vine canopy work was needed to allow a clean harvest with healthy and mature fruit. Generally, this was a typical late yielding season, with a combination of good sugar and flavour ripeness enhanced by a high natural acidity at harvest. Once harvested the grapes were pressed gently and around 60 per cent of the juice run to barrel to undergo fermentation with the balance completed in tank. Around six months on stirred yeast lees are added for a rich creamy texture and increased palate weight as well as creating a balanced complexity. Around 30 per cent of this wine was then allowed to complete full malolactic fermentation in order to create a balance of flavour and add mouthfeel to the final blend. A tropical Hawke's Bay Chardonnay with pineapple and peach aromas leading into a palate full of ripe fruit and creamy, nutty oak flavours.. (6 x 75 cl)

Lanzerac Estate Chardonnay Stellenbosch RSA
Description: The vineyards of Lanzerac are to be found in the quiet and utterly serene surroundings of the Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It was here that in 1958, following the French practice of combining wine farm and country hotel, that the Lanzerac homestead was transformed into a luxury manor. More recently, in 1991, South African businessman Christo Wiese purchased the Lanzerac farm and set about renovating the homestead and its land. In the process, the Lanzerac Manor and Winery was restored to its former glory as one of the region's most distinguished examples of Cape Dutch architecture. Wynand Hamman was appointed as winemaker and immediately set about replanting the vineyards and building a truly modern cellar. All wines are therefore made, bottled and produced on the 155 hectare country estate. Although this limits production capacity, it assists winemaker Wynand Hamman in concentrating on growing the right varieties for our unique terroir and to handle the fruit and wines with greater care and respect. Due to this quality-orientated policy we have helped pioneer the noble white varieties in South Africa and are proud to have received various national and international awards and accolades for our efforts. This Chardonnay is medium bodied with a straw coloured hue while the nose shows subtle oaking blended with nuances of citrus peel and butterscotch. The palate is mellow with balanced acidity leading to an enjoyable finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Pipers Brook ESTATE Chardonnay Tasmania Australia
Description: Light, mid-gold in colour with a complex bouquet of primary pear melon and citrus characters supported by the nuttiness of French oak and the butterscotch, honey and coffee aromas derived from malolactic fermentation and the oxidative handling process. On the palate this is quite a big wine in structure balanced by the natural acidity achieved in the vineyards, with ripe, malo and some French oak, though none of these characters dominates. It requires 1 to 2 years to develop its full complexity and has sufficient delicacy for long term aging in cool cellars. Sourced entirely from Pipers Brook Vineyard grapes more than half of this years blend came from vineyards at Pipers Brook including blocks A3 and A4 from the 24 year old ''Summit'' vineyard with the balance from the ''Timperton'' and Strathlynn'' vineyards. All the vines used are between 10 and 24 years old. Oxidative handling is employed to subdue the primary fruit characters and develop complex flavours suitable for long term bottle development. Some barrel fermentation takes place in both new and old French oak as well as stainless steel tanks. (6 x 75 cl)

Chateau Lamargue Chardonnay Vin de Pays d'Oc
Description: Chateau Lamargue is one of the most famous and prestigious cellars in the South of France. On a terrain of 117 hectares, the Chateau Lamargue cellar produces a range of ten wines that are divided into A.O.C Costieres de Nimes and Vins de pays d'Oc wines, which correspond to different types of wine and different types of production. Now owned by Campari this estate has undergone significant investment in the vineyards and a new showcase winery equipped with the most advanced winemaking technology. Additionally, Lamargue’s ageing cellars are now replete with all-new French and American oak barriques. A cold maceration on the skins allows for maximum extraction of the grape’s intense aromatic qualities. This is followed by a fast static decantation in order to obtain a very clean must. A slow fermentation on the lees is conducted in new oak barriques at a temperature of around 14°C over several months. All varietal wines produced by the Domaine Lamargue label are estate-grown and bottled. Yields at the property have been reduced to about 3,500 liters per hectare – which translates into approximately one bottle of wine per vine. Consequently, the varietal wines of Domaine Lamargue are deeply colored, intensely fragrant and rich in concentrated flavours. This Chardonnay has a wonderful pale yellow colour with some brilliant green hints. The nose is powerful and complex revealing the typical chardonnay aromas of hazelnuts and almonds. The palate is round and vivacious, well balanced with a finishing note of vanilla. (6 x 75 cl)
Price: £62.36
