Jackson Wine Estates LEGACY Alexander Valley California
Description: Established in 1989 Legacy is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from selected blocks in Alexander Mountain Estate vineyards. Legacy selected five lots of wine from the estate vineyards in the eastern mountains and hills enclosing the southern end of the Alexander Valley. Elevation holds the key to this wine’s combination of boldness and elegance with more than 80% of the grapes used to make this wine grown at elevations of at least 2,000 feet. Most of the Cabernet Sauvignon was chosen from selected blocks planted at 2,400 feet on Alexander Mountain Estate. Higher altitude creates its own climate, different from the vineyards planted on the valley floor. Even on the warmest summer days, the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean twenty miles away can be felt. Soils, too, are significantly different, on the mountain, the soil is thin, rocky and gravelly, this helps produce fruit that is complex, rich as well as concentrated. To complement the powerful fruit only small, thin-staved French oak barrels are used to age this wine for 16 months. The resulting wine is supple, with flavours of cedar, black currant and dark chocolate. Look also for hints of smoky toastiness and concentrated black cherries. (12 x 75 cl)

Description: La Crema was founded in 1979 and quickly established itself as a pioneer for intensely flavoured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the cool Sonoma Coast. Continuing this tradition, La Crema pursues the ultimate expression of the Russian River Valley, Carneros and Anderson Valley by handcrafting wines of distinctive flavour which achieve elegance and balance The Sonoma Coast is located on the western coastal fringe of Sonoma County, starting with a narrow strip at the Mendocino County border and continuing through the mouth of the Russian River; then down to the Sonoma Carneros border of Napa. This AVA is the largest in Sonoma County yet is the least planted. Known for its dramatic flux in temperature, the warm days and cool nights allow gradual ripening of grapes with fully developed flavours, high natural acidity and low pH. The region’s cold conditions push the limits of grape growing making it particularly well suited for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The hand-picked Chardonnay grapes from cool climate vineyards located six to twenty-five miles from the cold Pacific Ocean are delivered to the winery in small half ton bins to protect the integrity of the fruit. Once in the winery the belt delivery system for whole cluster pressing is used to to capture fresh fruit flavours. A clonal selection union of Dijon, Rued, and Wente add layers of complexity and aromatics and then 90% of the fruit undergoes barrel fermentation and 85% malolactic fermentation to enhance creamy textures. Finally, the barrel aged wine is left for seven months with bi-monthly lees stirring to create richness in the mouth. Melissa Stackhouse Wine Maker commented: 'Citrus aromas, lemon peel and green apple are balanced with clove and subtle vanilla in the background. Part of Jackson Wine Estates Atalon has emerged on the wine scene with a provenance firmly rooted in the Napa Valley. The soul of the Atalon story is a ghost winery dating back to 1888. Built by General W.S. Keyes, the white-stone building atop Howell Mountain claims a stake in Napa Valley viticultural lore. At the turn of the twentieth century, General Keyes was producing wines considered to be among the best in Napa County from this old landmark. From the 1970's the Cabernet Sauvignon vines surrounding the winery helped to establish the reputation of several boutique Napa wineries, including Liparita, Duckhorn and La Jota. In 1996 the famed Howell Mountain property was renamed the Keyes Vineyard in honor of the early farmer's pioneering viticultural contributions. The now legendary 1976 Paris Tasting at which the 1973 Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon triumphed over the cream of Bordeaux, propelled the estate into the pre-eminent position it still retains today. The Napa Valley Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from the B.R.V. and Arcadia Estate Vineyards and from select vineyards in the cool Carneros district of Napa Valley. Fruit from the Arcadia Vineyard contributes crisp acidity and a mineral core, while B.R.V. adds richness. Fruit from the Carneros properties provides the tropical fruit and spiciness that the region is known for. The predominant impression given by the wine is that of deftness and balance, with bright acidity supporting ripe fruit flavours and subtle oak tones. The Napa Valley Chardonnay exhibits beguiling aromas of light toast, white flower blossoms, essence of gala apples, pear and apricots, interwoven with hints of lemon zest, vanilla and creme brulee. Description: Part of Jackson Wine Estates, La Crema winery was founded in 1979 and quickly established itself as a pioneer for intensely flavoured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This wine is from the Anderson Valley known for sloping hillside benches thta are blanketed by cool fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean during the heat of the summer growing season. These moderating conditions are ideal in cultivating Pinot Noir with naturally bright acidity and delicate red cherry and cranberry fruit aromas. The Anderson Valley is Mendocino’s premier growing region for Pinot Noir and this wine used the Dijon, heirloom Martini and Pommard clones to enhance the aroma and complexity. In the vineyard fruit-thinning is undertaken to remove late flowering clusters ensuring even ripening throughout the vineyards. Next the fruit is handpicked from the cool climate vineyards and delivered to the winery in small half ton bins to protect the integrity of the fruit. Once in the winery the Pinot Noir grapes are put on to a belt delivery system with sorting table to purge damaged fruit. Here only 70% of the whole berries are selected before fermentation takes place for greater fruit expression. Next a five day, 48 degree cold soak is completed before fermentation so that it enhances the silky tannin texture. Open top fermentation with cap punch downs four times daily extracts precise colour before the wine is aged 10 months in 100% French oak barrels refines the finish. Finally the Pinot Noir is bottled unfiltered and unfined to express the pure character of this great varietal. Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse had the following comments to make about this wine: 'Exotic aromas are delicate and floral with a hint of blueberry and herbal black tea. The flavours are focused on lush dark red cherry fruit which provides an enticing plush texture. Bright acidity accented by cranberry and red cherries create a seductive fruit entry that leads to a broad lingering finish.' (6 x 75 cl)

THE HARVEST Grapes were handpicked in February. Healthy fruit was selected at optimal flavour ripeness. IN THE CELLAR Destalked with no crusing directly to press. Juice was settled for 18 hours at 12ºC. Must was racked and then inoculated with local, commercial yeast strain. Fermentation lasted for 21 days at 12-14ºC. A small percentage of Sauvignon Blanc was blended. Wine was lightly filtered prior to bottling in May. (12 x 75 cl)
