Two Hands SOPHIE'S GARDEN Shiraz Padthaway South Australia
Description: The 'two hands' are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz who formed the company in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz based wines from prized Shiraz producing regions within Australia. Michael Twelftree, initially from a construction background, spent a number of years exporting Australian Wine to the USA and Asia. Richard Mintz a chartered accountant, was formerly C.E.O. of one of Australia's leading Cooperage's in the Barossa Valley, South Australia. With Twelftree's contacts and wine savvy approach and Mintz's management skills and business acumen, the two old friends decided to make some wine together. In 2000 they started with just 17 tonnes of fruit from the McLaren Vale and Padthaway wine regions. From the beginning the wines were very well received at home and abroad with a healthy stream of reviews culminating in 2004 with Robert M. Parker pronouncing Two Hands as 'the finest negociant operation south of the equator'. Sourced from a vineyard located in the south west of Padthaway. What's interesting about this vineyard is that there are two distinctly different soil types, on one hand you have deep black sand on the other red clay over limestone . Each producing a different style of Shiraz which blend harmoniously together after being matured for 16 months in predominantly French oak, 20% of which was new. This is an excellent example of what this region is about and confirms our faith in Padthaway as a premium Australian Shiraz producing region. Almost black at the core with a purple rim. A little shy to begin but once opened up shows Asian spice and scented dark black fruits. A powerful full bodied palate with fine grained mouth coating tannins; concentrated upfront fruit that continues right across the palate. Although a big wine it shows focus; the fruit concentration carries the alcohol to offer a finely balanced wine of power and intensity. (12 x 75 cl)

Two Hands EDWARD & HARRY'S GARDEN Shiraz Langhorne Creek South Australia

Great care is taken from the vineyard to the winery in making this wine that is finally aged 14 months in 20% new French oak hogsheads, 10% 1 year old French oak, the balance in 3 & 4 year old French and American oak. The resultant wines show excellent colour and perfume with excellent acid and tannin balance. The wine shows all the Langhorne Creek trademarks of wet ash, mint, charcoal, wet stones and grilled nuts. The palate takes off with cascading layers of mulberries and plums, while this Shiraz comes over a little dense and sweet but after a boatload of fruit and a little oak you are left with a mouthful of fresh fruity tannin. (12 x 75 cl)

Brokenwood CRICKET PITCH Red South Eastern Australia
Description: The Cricket Pitch ‘CP’ Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz is a typical ‘South Eastern Australian’ blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 25% Shiraz , sourced from premium vineyards in McLaren Vale and Padthaway in South Australia, as well as Beechworth in Victoria. Although a drought year across most of Australia’s regions, careful handling has ensured that the ‘CP’ Cabernet-Merlot-Shiraz displays the savoury characters and easy drinking style that are the hallmarks of the wine. Matured mostly in one to three year old American and French oak barrels for up to 18 months, the ‘CP’ Red is accessible on the palate, and has balance, length, and subtle oak flavours that support the fruit. The pristine character of the varieties shines through in the glass, from the slightly cedary notes of the Cabernet Sauvignon through to the soft, fruity richness of the Shiraz. (6 x 75 cl)
