Description: Founded in 1972 by Warren and Barbara Winiarski, Stag’s LeapWineCellars produces wines it describes as ‘classical’. The now legendary 1976 Paris Tasting at which the 1973 Stag’s LeapCabernetSauvignon triumphed over the cream of Bordeaux, propelled the estate into the pre-eminent position it still retains today. The Napa Valley Chardonnay is a blend of fruit from the B.R.V. and Arcadia Estate Vineyards and from select vineyards in the cool Carneros district of Napa Valley. Fruit from the Arcadia Vineyard contributes crisp acidity and a mineral core, while B.R.V. adds richness. Fruit from the Carneros properties provides the tropical fruit and spiciness that the region is known for. The predominant impression given by the wine is that of deftness and balance, with bright acidity supporting ripe fruit flavours and subtle oak tones. The Napa Valley Chardonnay exhibits beguiling aromas of light toast, white flower blossoms, essence of gala apples, pear and apricots, interwoven with hints of lemon zest, vanilla and creme brulee. The aromas carry over on the palate with tones of white peach, lemon zest, lychee nut, pear and vanilla. The wine is refreshing, light and graceful on the palate, with creamy notes on entry and a crisp, well balanced mid-palate, finishing with excellent length, spiciness, balanced oak flavours and a hint of vanilla. Stag’s LeapWineCellars B.R.V., the estate vineyard on Big Ranch Road, contributes the majority of fruit to this blend, supplemented by grapes from the Rancho Chimiles Vineyard of Terrence Wilson, and other select Napa Valley growers. Once in the winery this Sauvignon, with a little Semillon spent 6 months ageing sur lies before release. A delicate perfume of lemon, pear, and honeysuckle introduce this wine’s sophisticated charm while subtle notes of pineapple, tangerine, and lemongrass weave their way through the glass. Description: Hawk Crest is the companion brand or 'house wine' of Stag's LeapWineCellars. Representing fine quality Hawk Crest wines have been handcrafted by the Winiarski family in the Napa Valley since 1974. Hawk Crest winemaker Mark Smith draws on two distinct areas in California to craft this approachable yet well structured CabernetSauvignon. The climate and diverse soils of Paso Robles in California’s Central Coast provide bright red berry fruit, while the high altitude and volcanic soils of the Red Hills district in Lake County give the wine structure and depth. Additionally, small percentages of Merlot, for texture and mouthfeel, and Petit Verdot, for mid-palate grip and intensity, were also added. The wine was aged for 12 months in French oak barrels for added complexity and polish. An outstanding first impression with its vibrant ruby colour and distinctive aromas of black cherry, spice, black pepper and tobacco. This gives way to Silky tannins and dark cherry flavours that stand out against a backdrop of spicy notes and hints of vanilla.
