Veramonte PRIMUS Casablanca Valley Chile
Description: A native Chilean, Agustin Huneeus joined Napa Valley based Franciscan Estates in 1985 as President and CEO, bringing with him international wine experience from Chile and the United States. In 1990, after discovering promising potential vineyard property in the Casablanca Valley, Agustin Huneeus realized his dream of returning to Chile to found Veramonte. Veramonte's Casablanca Valley is surrounded by coastal mountain ranges creating a diversity of unique microclimates and terroirs. Its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides ideal growing and ripening conditions for Chardonnay. The valley floor provides a cool Carneros-like climate, while the terraced hillside blocks have warmer temperatures, similar to the northern Napa Valley. This 'super-premium' wine uses Carmenere as the base together with some Cabernet Sauvignon. Using premium quality fruit from the Alto de Casablanca estate, the young wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Definitely a 'terroir' wine, Primus is a limited production wine that showcases the rare Carmenère variety, a grape once prevalent in Bordeaux in the 1800's when Chile first began importing vines from France. The finished wine has superb concentration with mouthfilling flavours of blackberry and cherries mingling with the spicy oak. (6 x 75 cl)

Vina Carmen RESERVE Sauvignon Blanc Casablanca Valley Chile
Description: Winemaker Comments: It has the fruit intensity and character of a Reserve range. A bright yellow-greenish colour with intense herbaceous characters, a hint of mineral notes; citric and tropical fruit flavours. A full palate, naturally balanced with its fruit acidity to provide a lingering finish. Vineyards and Winemaking : The grapes were hand harvested from our own premium selection of vineyards in the Casablanca Valley. The canopy of the vines was managed to provide greater fruit exposure to the warm morning temperatures, but also preventing overexposure of fruits to the afternoon sun. Irrigation was controlled to allow vines to accumulate sugars, but preventing an excessive vegetative growth. The combination of soil, sun exposure and climate in each of the vineyards provide the components to the final blend and produce the distinctive characteristics of Casablanca Sauvignon blanc. The juice was fermented in vats with selected yeasts. Temperature was kept at an average of 13ºC, which produces a long and gentle fermentation process. After fermentation the wines were left on its lees for two months. Then the wines were racked, blended, gently fined and bottled. (6 x 75 cl)

Botalcura LA PORFIA Grand Reserva Chardonnay Casablanca Valley Chile
Description: Vina Botalcura is the result of the passion of two men. Chilean partner, Juan Fernando Waidele, was seduced by the charm of the town of Botalcura and its environs, and this is where the idea to build a winery started. Juan Fernando then met enologist Philippe Debrus, who had a strong desire to return to a hands-on approach to winemaking, a style he learned in his native France when he was young. The winery is named after the town it is based in, Botalcura, near Talca, about 3 hours south of Santiago, in the coastal mountain range that forms the Maule Valley. Additionally, the word Botalcura means Large Stone in Mapundungun, the language of the Mapuche people of southern Chile. A part of the Vina Botalcura land was christened many years ago with the name La Porfia. This expression alludes to those who have tenacity and perseverance, qualities that fit perfectly with the spirit in which our Grand Reserve wines are made. The wines are aged for 1 year in French and American oak, and are then bottle aged for a further year before they are released from the winery. The grapes are grown in the coastal climate of the Casablanca Valley which features morning fog that burns off by midday, hot afternoons, and soft ocean breezes in the early evening, which produce very cool nights throughout the growing season. The marked difference in daytime and night time temperatures favours the development of the characteristic aromas of the Chardonnay grape. This has produced a medium-deep golden coloured wine with pale yellow highlights. Aromas of white peach are complemented by crisp pink grapefruit and a light tropical component, while soft notes of vanilla, honey and toasted almond can be noted. This grand reserve offers a beautiful expression of the variety grown in the cool Casablanca Valley, with its characteristic white peach and tropical aromas. Fermentation in French oak barrels integrated the notes of vanilla and toast while on the mouth, the rich, buttery texture is brightened by good acidity, resulting in well-balanced, elegant Chardonnay with a long, smooth finish.
