Growing Syrah Grapes

Name: Planeta Syrah IGT Sicily
Where it's from:  Italy, Sicily
Price per case: £131.34
Style: Powerful Reds
Description: Planeta has risen spectacularly since inception in 1994, being named Winery of the Year 1999. In 1996 Planeta started growing Syrah because it is the international grape variety which, more than any other, is at its best in warm regions such as Sicily. As Syrah needs a long exposure to the sunlight, Planeta believe that sunny Sicily, widely accepted as the land of its origin, is the most suitable for the production of premium quality Syrah. Planeta blended the first vintages of this variety with Nero d’Avola, however, starting from 1999, a pure Syrah wine was produced, full and rich with a spicy bouquet and aromatic notes of green figs, this is the sunniest wine of the Planeta range. The Syrah grapes are destemmed and crushed, followed by the process of extraction on skins conduced with 12 days of maceration. After draining the wine is matured in 225 litres French oak barrels for 12 months. A ruby red coloured wine with violet undertones and an Australian styled nose reminiscent of intense spices like pepper and cloves. Fig and fig sap scents predominate, and the wood notes blend into the fruit gathering into a cocoa-like complex aroma. The young tannins and fresh fruit palate are luscious and supple in texture, with an impact that is lasting. The power of this wine is due to its complexity more than just the tannin.

Duck Pond Cellars Syrah Columbia Valley Washington State
Description: Founded in 1993, Duck Pond Cellars owns and operates 820 acres of vineyards in the valleys of northern Oregon and slopes of eastern Washington. Growing in these diverse climates allows Duck Pond Cellars to produce the best quality fruit for a wide selection of wines. This wine is 100% Syrah and the grapes are selected from the 480-acre southern facing Desert Wind Vineyard that is located in Eastern Washington on the Wahluke Slope. This site is considered a zone 3, the hottest in the Columbia Valley, however, cool evenings allow for acid development. Great care from the vineyard to the winery is taken in assembling this wine that leads to 17 months barrel ageing in both French and American oak barrels. Richness and warmth emmanate from this powerfully made Syrah. It is styled to be big and bold from its inky color to its solid structure of tannin and on through the oaky fnish. Wente VINEYARD SELECTION San Fransisco Bay Syrah California
Description: This Syrah is bursting with the spicy aromas and flavors of pomegranate, black cherry and earth. With a full mild and round tannin backbone, on the mouth this wine is full of fresh strawberries to augment the flavors found in the aromas. This full-bodied Syrah is best paired with grilled meats, spicy pasta sauces and a wide array of fruits and cheeses. Vineyard: Livermore Valley's warm days and cool nights are excellent for growing high-quality Syrah. This wine comes from four vineyards throughout the valley, each with its own mesooclimate. Fermentation: Each vineyard was harvested separately and fermented in upright fermenters. Rack and return was performed twice daily. Rack and return is the process of draining all of the free-run juice off of the cap, then pumping the free-run juice back over the top of the fermenter. This method increases color and tannin extraction and improving mouthfeel through the integration of oxygen. Aging: Each blend was aged separately, with part in neutral French and American oak barrels and part in stainless steel. (12 x 75 cl)

Catherine Marshall Wines BWC Syrah Mourvedre Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Restrained, yet robust blend of black pepper, cumin, cardamom seeds and ripe plums. Mineral oak tannins provide a persistent backdrop. 86.5% Syrah: 13.5% Mourvedre. In 1996, Cathy Marshall decided to have a braai for her friends. The party turned into something of a breakthrough evening when they decided to crush some grapes that she had bought, barefooted in her garage. Nine months later the original party gathered again to bottle the wine by hand. Barefoot is now known as BMC wines, and by 1998 Cathy was handling 16 tonnes of grapes rather than the original one tonne. However, the annual harvest ritual of the 'footstomp bash' continues, but the wine is now made in the 'high tech' wineries of Amani and Yonder Hill. The company does not own vineyards, but sources the grapes from some of the best vineyards to make top quality wines. This is in the tradition of the French 'negociants' -- with a South African flavour. BMC wines are terrific to drink and the bottles provide a classic backdrop to any table with the disctinctive and stylish label, a unique collaboration with artist Hannetjie de Clercq. The grapes originate from Agter-Paarl / Windmeul area (6 x 75 cl)

Joseph Phelps Vineyards Syrah Napa Valley California
Description: Founded in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is an independent, estate-based winery located outside of St. Helena. Perched on a knoll in bucolic Spring Valley, the graceful redwood winery overlooks vineyard-studded hills, the town of St. Helena and the Mayacamas Mountains to the west. Long known for his innovative spirit and passion for quality, Joe Phelps pioneered a number of 'firsts' in the early years of the winery. The 1974 Insignia — released in the spring of 1978 — was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. The release of the 1974 Syrah in 1977 sparked industry-wide interest in a remarkable French varietal whose plantings in California had disappeared and been virtually forgotten for over half a century. And in 1990, after years of research, a whole new family of Rhône-style wines was introduced which today includes Syrah, Viognier and a Chateauneuf-du-Pape style blend called Le Mistral. 100% Napa Syrah from estate-grown grapes and independent growers . The grapes were harvested at an average 24.4° Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 20 months in a combination of two-to-three-year-old French oak barrels , and new French oak . The wine was subsequently blended and bottled. Dark berry coloured, medium-bodied red with a floral, white pepper nose, concentrated plum and black cherry flavours, and a rich, lingering finish.
