Pleasant aromas of integrated oak and ripe black currants dominate the entry into this fine Merlot. The palate consists of black cherry and blueberry flavours with a spicy edge. The finish is soft and rich with grainy tanning and a layer of spicy oak, which lingers subtly. The fruit selected to produce this fine Merlot was grown in the Hawkes Bay region, on the East coast of New Zealand. The Bullrush vineyard is situated in the red metals triangle area, which is renown for its red metal soils and production of high quality red wine varieties. The vineyard uses vertical shoot positioned trellis on which to train the vines and these are pruned to maintain a production of three to four tonnes per acre. Leaf removal in the fruit band to expose the grapes to sunlight and free flow of air has been an important factor in maximising flavour development. Matua Valley Wines began as a small, family-run winery in West Auckland, New Zealand, in 1973. In the next few years, winemakers Ross and Bill Spence quickly gained a reputation for innovative, award-winning New Zealand wines (12 x 75 cl)

Vasse Felix ADAMS ROAD Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Margaret River Western Australia
Description: Vasse Felix was the first commercial vineyard and winery to be established in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. The vineyard took its unusual name from an early event in the district. Vasse was a French seaman who drowned last century when his longboat overturned near the site of Busselton while exploring the coastline on the ship 'Geographe' under Captain Freycinet. Paradoxically, Felix is the Latin word for fortunate or luck. Thus the name refers to a favoured place in Australia discovered by the French. This wine displays a fine, deep crimson colour with royal purple hues. A complex aroma of mulberries, fruit jubes, bay leaf and dusty Cabernet is intertwined with spicy oak. The palate is soft and rich with fine emery-like tannins and a crisp tang reflecting itÕs cool climate origins. Flavours of stewed rhubarb and cranberries leave a lasting impression long after the last sip.

Chateau du Cedre HERITAGE du CEDRE Cahors
Description: Pascal Verhaeghe has been the driving force behind the Cahors 'Quality Charter' and quality oozes from these wines. The estate was originally created by Charles Verhaeghe on vineyard land devastated by the frosts in 1956 in Vire-Sur- Lot. His sons Pascal and Jean-Marc duly studied winemaking, the former in Burgundy and California, the latter in Bordeaux. Ecological viticultural methods eschewing weedkillers and chemical fertilizers, yield reduction by serious pruning, leaf stripping for greater sun exposure and air circulation, harvesting the grapes on the verge of overripeness yield the superb raw material essential to create fabulous wines. In the cellars the Verhaeghes aim for softness, richness and harmony through gentle extraction by long vattings and limited pigeage, malolactic fermentation and sensible use of oak. A ruby-red coloured wine with Malbec that is softened by plummy Merlot soothing to the gullet, a nice touch of lip-smacking acidity. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £56.27
