Louis Latour CHATEAU CORTON GRANCEY Grand Cru Rouge
Description: The winery of Corton-Grancey dates back to 1832 but it has only been since 1891, after the ruinous phylloxera crisis, that the Chateau and its purpose built cuverie has been the heart of Domaine Louis Latour. This particular wine is only produced in years when the Pinot Noir grapes reach perfect maturity. The vineyards from the following holdings are planted with vines with an average age of over 40 years. After being aged for 18 months in the cellars of Corton-Grancey, each cask is then meticulously tasted and appraised and, then, only the finest casks showing the best colour and bouquet and capacity to age will be blended to make the final wine of Chateau Corton-Grancey which only appears in exceptional years. Soil: Marl-based soil, limestone base. Vinification: Traditional open-vat fermentation at the Cuverie of Corton Grancey followed by 18 months in oak casks. Chateau Corton-Grancey Grand Cru 1996 tasted 10th December 1998: A lightish dark ruby colour and a very expressive nose of ripe fruit overtaken by a smell of fur. This fruit concentration is seen clearly on the palate alongside some well-structured underlying vanilla from the oak and hints of bitter chocolate and black currant. A wine for the cellar. The Wine Spectator, May 15, 1999 reviews the Chateau Corton-Grancey 1996: 87 points. 'Light-bodied Pinot, showing a purity of pretty berry flavour that's sweet-tasting on the midpalate. Well made in a subtle style. Should gain depth with age.' (12 x 75 cl)

Domaine de l'Espigouette Cotes du Rhone
Description: Bernard Latour is a highly qualified grower in his mid forties, so much so that he teaches viticulture at the local wine school. His vineyard, much of which is situated on the famous ÔPlan de DieuÕ outside Violes, is planted mainly with 40 year old Grenache with some Syrah and Mourvedre. His yield is 46 hl/ha for the Cotes du Rhone, but 37 hl/ha for his Villages. The vinification is traditional, some in stainless steel tanks and the remainder in cement vats, and lasts for about 12 days at a temperature between 30á and 34á. M. Latour pumps over the must one third of the total volume at a time in a daily cycle during fermentation. Part of the wine spends 6 to 9 months in foudres before bottling. The wine has no fining and just a very light filtration. These are old fashioned, rich, spicy wines (12 x 75 cl)

Louis Latour DOMAINE DE VALMOISSINE Pinot Noir Vin de Pays des Coteaux du Verdon Rouge
Description: The Domaine de Valmoissine is located on the site of the ancient monastery and university of Valmoissine at 500 metres above sea-level which guarantees sunshine during the summer months whilst remaining cool and limits the possibility of spring frosts. The ideally exposed south-facing vineyards bring the grapes to maturity at the same time as our Corton Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy. They are entirely hand-picked before being fermented in stainless steel open-vats for a short period of 3-4 days. Pigeage will take place 2-3 times a day to extract colour and tannins. The wine is then matured in old oak casks from Maison Louis Latour's cooperage in Beaune in which the wines flavours and aromas develop naturally, and harmonise with the mellow wood flavours of the oak. The style of this wine resembles Burgundy's classical 'Vin Vermeil' that the first Louis Latour was producing at the end of the 18th century. Elegance and finesse packed with fruit, and a vivid 'vermeil' or bright red colour. Bottled after 8 months of maturation, it can be drunk with pleasure only a year after having been made. The resurrection of this style of wine already has a dedicated following. Soil: Argilo calcareous. Vinification: Traditional Burgundy techniques with oak-ageing. The Wine Magazine, April 1999: 90 points. 'Domaine de Valmoissine, located on a limestone plateau 50 miles North of Saint-Tropez, is cooled by mistral winds. There are no restrictions on grape varieties in this vin de pays zone which was created in 1992. Louis Latour has picked up the experimental gauntlet and created this stunning Pinot Noir. A lovely plum and blackcurrant nose. The palate has a bitter cherry, farmyard feel with an edge of ripe red plums and rich spice. A good characterful wine.' New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopaedia, Tom Stevenson: 'This stunning wine is easily the greatest vin de pays Pinot Noir ever produced. It could be the greatest vin de pays that has ever been produced from any grape variety, but it is not possible or fair to compare wines of totally different grapes and styles and say which is best. I am certain, however, that it is the most exciting vin de pays I have ever tasted. It is so soft and silky, with such a purity of fruit and so much finesse that few Burgundians would believe this is not a Burgundy, and a fine one at that. It's not cheap for a vin de pays, but it is better than many Burgundies twice its price.' The Wine Enthusiast November 15, 1998 tasting Domaine de Valmoissine 1996: 87 points. 'Pale ruby cast. Medium-bodied. Balanced acidity. Highly extracted. Mildly oaked. Brown spices, red fruits, dried herbs. Pleasantly aromatic, with a full and flavourful palate. Complex, yet delicate, with a well-balanced mouthfeel. Shows fine length and excellent varietal intensity.' Decanter October 1997 tasting Domaine de Valmoissine 1995 recommended: 'Smoky, chocolate aromas of medium intensity following onto the palate.' (12 x 75 cl)

Domaine Follin-Arbelet LES VERCOTS 1er Cru Aloxe-Corton
Description: Since Frank Follin inherited vines originally under the control of the Louis Latour empire, he has been making sublime wines of concentration, purity and complexity. On his 6 ha of vineyards all of his vines from Aloxe-Corton, Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Romanee St Vivant, are tended by hand and respectfully protected from any form of insecticide or pesticide. A qualified geologist, Frank has developed wines that are a great reflection of the Terroir. Here the Corton vines are planted on the chalk or 'terre blanche' soil that seems to give the wine a seductively floral bouquet and delicacy of fruit. Pinot Noir is the classic grape of red burgundy with a deep red almost purple colour this wine has intense floral aromas. Good tannic structure is evident while the intense mulberry fruit flavours dominate this very well made wine showing a long finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Louis Latour Pommard EPENOTS 1er Cru Pommard Domaine Louis Latour
Description: The village of Pommard is comfortably sandwiched between the town of Beaune and the commune of Volnay. In contrast to the wines of its close neighbours, those of Pommard tend to be fuller, more tannic and expansive in the mouth, similar to those of the Côte de Nuits. The Epenots is solid and firm in its youth and needs time to mature and mellow out before revealing its full glory. It is intense and spicy with a distinct truffle bouquet and a flavourful richness. The 1998 Pommard 1er Cru vintage has a concentrated deep red robe and the palate is a reflection of the concentrated fruity aromas. The wine has a lingering finish and a good length. (12 x 75 cl)

Chateau Calon Segur 3eme Cru Classe Saint Estephe
Description: This estate developed out of the Domaine de Calon, where wine was probably made as early as the 13th century. The present chateau was made at the end of the 16th century on the site of a fort. The most famous owner of this estate was Marquis Alexandre de Segur, the 18th century president on the Bordeaux parliament. He owned Lafite, Latour and Mouton but he preferred Calon. 'I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon.' A heart still appears on the Chateau Calon-Segur label. In good vintages, the true Saint Estephe mark of a classic, concentrated wine comes through. It possesses spicy fruit, woodland scents, well-integrated tannins and considerable oak. 22 months: 40% in new barrels. Parker 92+. (12 x 75 cl)
