Thelema Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch RSA
Description: In July 1983 the McLean Family Trust bought the old fruit farm Thelema, situated on the top of the Helshoogte Pass about 6 kilometers outside of Stellenbosch. This purchase was the culmination of a long search by Gyles and Barbara Webb for that rare location where exceptional wines could be made. The farm comprises 157 ha of land on the slopes of the Simonsberg. The elevation ranges from 370 to 640 meters above sea level of mainly south-facing slopes, making Thelema one of the highest and probably coolest wine farms in the Stellenbosch area. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are De-stalked, crushed, pumped into stainless steel tanks, inoculated with yeast, pumped over for 6 days, left for a further 10 days before pressing, and racked barrel after malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged 20 months in 225 l French oak, 50% new wood. This wine has concentrated blackcurrant, blackberry and mocha flavours, hints of mint and eucalyptus with nice grippy tannins and long finish. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £133.35
Horse Mountain Pinotage Voor-Paardeberg Paarl RSA
Description: Horse MountainWines embody a new spirit of adventure in winemaking in the Cape with a fresh, entrepreneurial approach, unfettered by conventional tradition but rooted in the tried and tested philosophy that fine wine is made in the vineyard. These wines come from a former dairy farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain between Paarl and Wellington. The 217ha property was acquired in 1997 after its potential as a suitable terroir for quality wine production had been identified. Since then, energetic owner Craig Lardner, a former property developer with a new-found passion for winemaking, and innovative consultant viticulturist Paul Wallace, have systematically selected nearly 50ha of the 150ha of viticulturally viable ground for painstaking preparation and careful cultivation to five grape varieties. The grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that flourish on the high-lying, high-potential Vilefontes soils. While the Merlot and Pinotage have settled in the lower-lying, rich red Swartland/Glenrosa soils and Cabernet Franc does well in the similarly low-altitude Estcourt soils. Such significant variations in soil comnbined with an exceptional climate compared with conditions in the surrounding Paarl wine growing district, earned this new viticultural pocket its own 'ward' status in 2003. Horse Mountainwines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. This wine is a bright, deep ruby colour with sweet, ripe berry fruit aromas and flavours, underpinned by firm, but soft tannins. An intriguing hint of banana on the nose it is a typical Cape Pinotage with plenty of character it benefits from judicious wooding in a combination of French and American oak barrels. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £54.65
