Alpha Zeta 'R' Ripasso Valpolicella Superiore
Description: Alpha Zeta was established with winemaker MattThompson in 1999. The original aim was quite simple: to produce mid-priced Veronese wines using fruit from selected vineyards rather than by buying and blending bulk wine from the various co-operatives. Over the years, Matt has developed a great relationship with a series of growers, and has convinced them to lower yields and pick later. This has resulted in riper and more flavoursome grapes. The grapes for these wines are sourced from vineyards in the Valpantena and Monteforte d'Alpone valleys, both of which are to the east of Verona. Once the grapes arrive at the winery, it is then Matt's job to ensure that these flavours are retained in the finished wine, and this he does admirably. These are modern, innovative wines that express the real quality inherent in Veronese viniculture. Made by re-fermenting the young wine on the skins of grapes that we laid down to dry has provided this deep red coloured wine with great depth and flesh. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £56.29

Matt Thomson PONTE PIETRA Trebbiano Garganega del Veneto
Description: This Trebbiano/Garganega is lightly floral on the nose, with perfumes reminiscent of the almond blossom that characterises the best white wines from this region. The attractive crisp green apple fruit on the palate gives way to a fresh, zingy finish. The wine is made with fruit that is declassified from Soave DOC status. The fruit for this wine is grown on the slopes of vineyards situated next to the Soave zone in the Val d’Alpone. The vineyards have excellent south east exposure, with soils of volcanic origin. Monteforte director, Gaetano Tobin, known as Tano, is a great believer in using solely Garganega in his Soave, so the Trebbiano that his growers have is given IGT status. These wines are made by Matt Thomson, at the Cantina di Monteforte. Verona’s ‘Ponte Pietra’ dates back to Roman times. The vine, however, has been planted on the hills outside of Verona for much longer than this bridge has spanned the Adige River. This fresh, vibrant and easy drinking wine is firmly within this long tradition of Veronese viniculture. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £65.19

Delta Vineyard Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc NZ
Description: Light, pale lemon yellow in colour, the Delta Sauvignon Blanc has tremendous intensity on the nose, with perfumes of passion fruit and blackcurrants. On the palate, it is clean and fresh, with good balance between elegant, ripe fruit, crisp minerally acidity and a long, perfumed finish. Sheena Gray, wife of winemaker Matt Thomson, bought this 10 hectare site in Marlborough’s Dillon’s Point in 2001. Matt is convinced that the slightly cooler nights in this sub-region produce wines with more aromatic qualities than other areas. Together with Malcolm Adams, a viticulturist with more than 20 years experience, Matt and Sheena have created one of Marlborough’s mosts outstanding vineyards for Sauvignon Blanc. The soils have a high mineral content and good drainage due to the sand lying beneath the soil’s surface. The wine is bottled under the Stelvin closure, so that it can be enjoyed free from cork taint and in perfect condition. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £128.84
