Mondavi hand-selected 93% of the grapes for this wine from the Los Carneros region, which spans the southernmost tip of Napa and Sonoma Valleys. This region, designated an American Viticultural Area in 1983, has become famous for developing intensely-flavored Pinot Noir grapes that produce wines with vibrant fruit character. The Los Carneros AVA is known for its strong winds, nutrient-lean, clay loam soils and a nightly blanket of cold fog rolling off the San Francisco Bay. 45% of the harvested came from grapes at the Robert Mondavi Huichica Hills Vineyard, a site planted to more than 23 clones of Pinot Noir for flavour complexity in the wine. The clones were selected for their small, flavour-intense berries, looser clusters and color intensity. The balance of the wine comes from other cool climate vineyards with complementary flavours. The wine was handcrafted in the To Kalon Fermentation Cellar with traditional techniques, including hand-sorting of the clusters, gravity-flow movement of the must and wine, and fermentation in a traditional oak tank. The wine then undergoes Sixteen months of ageing in new French oak chateau barrels that added vanilla and toasty oak accents. To retain fully this wine's enormous depth, texture and length of finish, it was bottled without fining or filtration. One of the most temperamental grape varieties, Pinot Noir vines thrive in these the cool, windy rolling hills that span the southernmost tip of Napa and Sonoma Valleys, developing small crops of vibrantly flavored fruit. Extremely gentle handling through all phases of winemaking enabled Mondavi to bottle this wine without filtration after 10 months of barrel ageing. This has produced a deep red coloured wine with aromas of black cherry, rose, forest and warm spice complexity that fan out across the palate. For decades they have sourced fruit from coastal regions, and in 1994 introduced Robert Mondavi Private Selection wines to exhibit the high quality and character of the coastal grapes and vineyards. Gentle handling of the grapes, must and wine captured the aromatic character and silky texture of this Merlot. After lightly crushing the grapes, the must was fermented in temperature controlled tanks until dry. Following fermentation, Mondavi kept the skins with the wine for a total of 24 days to naturally soften the tannins and develop varietal complexity. Malolactic fermentation enhanced the wine's roundness and depth. Finally the wine is aged two-thirds in small French and American oak barrels for 5 months to add a hint of oak complexity while retaining the focused fruit flavours. A lovely deep red coloured wine with aromas of dark forrest fruits. The great influence of terroir on Merlot vines is revealed with an array of different flavors developed in diverse soil-types and mesoclimates. Mondavi like the vibrancy of the Merlot grown the Los Carneros American Viticultural Area , while the pure fruit expression of Stags Leap District AVA Merlot and the rich, deep flavours of Merlot cultivated in the Oakville AVA are also used in this wine. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec adds structure and spice to this wine. Mondavi handcrafted the wine with extended maceration and 14 months of ageing in French oak barrels. Gentle clarification through barrel-to-barrel racking enabled the wine to be bottled without filtration and fully capture the silky, complex character.
