Casa Catelli Nerod'Avola IGT Sicilia
Description: Winemaker's note: rich ruby red colour, intense and ethereal nose of dried flowers. On the palate it's soft and fruity with notes of cherries and spices that enhance the aromas. It has a long and elegant finish. Aging: 2 months in used French barrique and 3 months in the bottle About NeroD'Avola: Nero means black, while Avola is a small town in the southern east part of Sicily. Sicily was the most important Greek colony in the 5 century BC, and it's believed that NeroD'Avola was brought to Sicily by the Greeks. It grows in many different areas, although it may find the best conditions in the southern east part of Sicily, around the Ispica and Pachino towns . Here the sandy soil and the nice ventilation from the sea provides the best condition to make the most structured NeroD'Avola. This varietal has a lot to offer, good colour, explosive fruit flavours, good structure and a propensity to age well. On the other hand, it may develop high acidity, that's why the sandy soil is important to prevent that. In the last 10 years the quality of the wines has significantly improved, with better care on the vineyards and more resources in the wineries. The results are outstanding (6 x 75 cl) Price: £50.76

Villa Tonino Nerod'Avola Sicily
Description: This wine is a blend of fruit sourced from two different vineyards, one near Marsala and the other in central Sicily. The grapes from the former region, normally an area regarded as being too cool for Nerod'Avola, have given vibrancy and an aromatic dimension to the wine, while the latter, a hotter, drier zone, provides the colour, weight and structure. The blend makes for a startlingly good wine: deep coloured, ripe and peppery on the nose and full and fleshy on the palate. The Curatolo family use Alberto Antonini as their consultant, in order to have at hand the modern winemaking skills required to allow the Nerod'Avola, one of Sicily's most exciting indigenous grape varieties, to express its maximum potential. Antonini chose the fruit carefully and used refrigeration and inert gas both to preserve and protect the flavours that had accumulated under the hot Sicilian sun. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £76.63
