Mondavi/Rothschild OPUS ONE Napa Valley California
Description: A great deal of care and expertise is required to produce this wine which is a collaboration between Robert Mondavi and the Château Mouton Rothschild families. The brainchild of two leading lights of the wine world, Robert Mondavi and Philippe de Rothschild, Opus One is a Napa Valley based joint venture with a commitment to quality and perfection. Its magnificent location, opulent winery and state-of-the-art technology is grape nirvana. The grapes are hand sorted and it is only gravity that is used to move the berries from the destemmer into the stainless steel fermenting tank. As Opus One only makes 1 wine each tank is used only once during harvest so that fermentation and maceration do not need to be rushed. The tank draws out a myriad of rich flavours and colours from the grape skin, seed and pulp. The tanks are then raised so the free-run wine can flow into new French Oak Barrels, while the residue that provides the backbone to this wine is also barrel aged. Once ready Fining takes place that clarifies and polishes the wine. A rich, elegant Bordelais nose marks this New World classic, which offers crushed cassis flavours that cascade into infinity and are partnered by mocha hints and velvety tannins. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £1840.96

During the growing season abundent sunlight in the previous vintage produced high fertility in the vine buds and a large crop was thinned to the lowest per acre yield in a decade. As a result of this the harvest was very compact lasting just 11 days and produced wines of vigor with finesse. A complex, vigorous, fresh tasting wine showing currant, anise, black cherry, mineral, leather and sage flavors with delicate liquorice flavours and scents. Sweet and powerful, this is an easy drinking wine with subtle tannins and a marvellous finish. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £784.06

Description: At 90 years of age, Robert Mondavi remains the global emissary for these wine. His vision was to create wines in California that belong in the company of the great wines of the world. Robert Mondavi is known for producing hand-crafted wines of distinct style. Representing the best of California wine growing regions, including the legendary Napa Valley, each of the wines offers unique qualities and characteristics. In 1966, Robert G. Mondavi founded the Robert Mondavi Winery to create wines in California that belong in the company of the world's finest. For over three decades, the winery has embodied the Robert Mondavi family's commitment to excellence, innovation and the production of distinctive wines. The Robert Mondavi Winery is the flagship brand for the estate and these elegant, limited-production wines define the very best of Napa Valley. Robert Mondavi Winery is located in the heart of Napa Valley, California. The first major winery built in Napa Valley in the post-Prohibition era, Robert Mondavi Winery helped establish the foundation for the modern-day California wine business. Its mission-style architecture, with the expansive archway and bell tower designed by Cliff May, has become an enduring landmark that evokes California's winemaking history. The grapes were selected from the Los Carneros American Viticultural Area , including 75% from our Huichica Hills Vineyard. One of the most temperamental grape varieties, Pinot Noir vines thrive in these the cool, windy rolling hills that span the southernmost tip of Napa and Sonoma Valleys, developing small crops of vibrantly flavored fruit. Extremely gentle handling through all phases of winemaking enabled Mondavi to bottle this wine without filtration after 10 months of barrel ageing. This has produced a deep red coloured wine with aromas of black cherry, rose, forest and warm spice complexity that fan out across the palate. The tannins are supple and beautifully integrated with an enjoyable long finish. Limited Availability. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £138.33
