Sean Thackrey’s has a slightly ramshackle winery in cool Bolinas, just north of San Francisco. Something of an independently minded intellectual, he makes wines to please himself and hence the unconventional range of wines. Orion is made entirely from Syrah, produced from old vines in the Andrew Rossi Vineyard in St Helena. It’s a gorgeous, rich, highly extracted wine with pepper and cherries as well as a background of earth and smoke. The grapes from these low-yielding vines are intense and powerful, providing a wonderful resource to make a rare and brilliant Grenache such as this. The2000 Yalumba Handpicked Tri-centenary Vines Grenache is deep cherry red in colour with purple hues and has a complex and earthy nose with black cherries, liquorice, spice and white pepper. The palate is soft, velvety and wonderfully structured and displays mouth-filling layers of ripe black fruits and pepper. Fine tannins complement the long and warm finish of this stunning wine. Cline Cellars ANCIENT VINES Mourvedre Contra Costa County California
Description: At the turn of the 20th century, Oakley was home to a number of Portuguese and Italian immigrants who found many similarities to the Mediterranean climate they had left behind. They planted thousands of acres of orchards and vineyards. Today, a century later, due to the devastation of phylloxera and the encroachment of commercial and residential development, only 600 acres of vineyards remain in this evolving community. Cline Cellars owns and controls 300 of those acres including some of the oldest surviving vines in California. Cline Cellars began when Fred Cline's maternal grandfather, Valeriano Jacuzzi lived in Oakley and inspired him to go on to to U.C. Davis to study agriculture management. After attaining his degree in 1982, Fred returned to Oakley and founded Cline Cellars. There he started producing wines and restoring his grandfather’s ancient vines: today the Zinfandel, Carignane and Mourvedre produced from these vines are some of the most unique and historic wines made in California. In 1991, the winery relocated from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County. Here Fred pioneered the planting of Rhone varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. From vines over 100 years old which give fruit of remarkable concentration, this is Contra Costa Mourvedre par excellence. The Ancient Vines Mourvedre, grown in the warm, sandy soils of Oakley California, produces a wine that has a distinct chocolate character.
