Description: The Bergsig Estate has been in the Lategan family since 1843. De Wet Lategan is the sixth generation winemaker and has obtained a BSc degrees in Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch, before joining the family firm in 1990. His brothers Louis and Plum manage the vineyards. Their father Prop Lategan is still very active in the general management and promotion of the wines from his beautiful 400 Ha farm in the foothills of Bainskloof Mountain. Bergsig Estate lies at the narrow funnel-like entrance to the Breede River Valley. The regular afternoon South-easterly breezes have a moderating effect on the summer heat and ensures cool picking temperatures throughout the day. The Bergsig Estate was the first winery outside the coastal region to earn a superior award for red wine. More specifically the 1978 CabernetSauvignon. This encouraged Prop Lategan to plant more red varieties and today 20% of all plantings are CabernetSauvignon , Merlot, Pinotage, Ruby Cabernet and Tinta Barocca.
