In the heart of the Carneros appellation stands the majestic chateau which houses Domaine Carneros winery. Claude Taittinger, president of Champagne Taittinger, traveled in the Carneros as a young man and recognized the potential of this beautiful area to produce world class wines. With the completion of Domaine Carneros in 1989, his dream of a California prestige winery became a reality. Domaine Carneros stands as testimony to Champagne Taittinger's devotion to the creation of fine wines, and is considered the landmark of the region. The newest complement to the distinguished line of pinot noirs, the Avant-Garde Pinot Noir is the third pinot noir in the collection. Created to be the vanguard of the vintage, this wine heralds the particular fresh fruit qualities of the Carneros Region. A complement to Famous Gate Pinot Noir, Avant Garde is the first new wine produced by Domaine Carneros for seven years. Intensely aromatic with hints of orange rind, violets, rose petals, anise and vanilla. This wine was fermented in open top fermenters and aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. (6 x 75 cl)

The wine is fermented in small open topped tanks and then aged for 10 months in French Oak Burgundy barrels. The barrels used in the ageing of the Avant-Garde PinotNoir are specially selected from cooperages that complement the aroma and flavor profile of the wine. The Avant-Garde is a delicate wine intensely aromatic with notes of strawberries, cherries, clove, orange peel, rose petals, and black tea. Blended primarily from the Domaine Carneros Estate PinotNoir vineyards, the fruit for this wine is grown by the Chateau as well as on our Pompadour Vineyard located near the town of Sonoma. The Los Carneros AVA is known for its strong winds, nutrient-lean, clay loam soils and a nightly blanket of cold fog rolling off the San Francisco Bay. 45% of the harvested came from grapes at the Robert Mondavi Huichica Hills Vineyard, a site planted to more than 23 clones of PinotNoir for flavour complexity in the wine. The clones were selected for their small, flavour-intense berries, looser clusters and color intensity. The balance of the wine comes from other cool climate vineyards with complementary flavours.
