Gallo Family Vineyards SONOMACOUNTYPinotNoir California
Description: Winemaking has been a tradition in the Gallo family for almost 70 years and in developing the Ernest & Julio Gallo Sonomawines, the winemakers have made a careful journey from vine to wine. The journey begins in SonomaCounty where cool ocean breezes, lingering coastal fog and the warm sun nurture the ripening grapes. It ends with patient barrel-by-barrel tasting during fermentation and ageing to ensure that the potential tasted on the vine is captured in the bottle. More than other varietals, perhaps, PinotNoir is a winemaker's wine, especially in the opportunities it provides for finessing delicate nuances of flavour or character. California's SonomaCounty makes this challenge even more appealing by the excellent quality of its PinotNoir grapes. Vineyards near the coast offer virtually ideal weather conditions with warm daytime temperatures during the growing season, followed by heavy fog intrusion at night and dramatically cooler conditions. Such a climate cycle slows down the ripening process, enabling PinotNoir to develop crisp acids, good colour and great depth of flavour on the vine. Once in the winery the grapes were de-stemmed to limit the extraction of bitter tannin and delivered to the fermenting tanks uncrushed, since broken and macerated skins can be another source of excess tannin in the finished wine. Fermentation with 20-30% whole berries results in PinotNoir rounder in body and fresher in flavour. The wine was 100% barrel aged for 6 months, during which time it gained greater complexity by completing a secondary cycle of malolactic fermentation. This care has produced a distinct fruit-forward character with intense flavours of dark red fruit-cherry and ripe raspberry. This PinotNoir is framed by fresh earthy notes and a velvety finish showing a subtle layer of sweet vanilla oak. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £69.61

Jackson Wine Estates LA CREMA PinotNoir Sonoma Coast California
Description: La Crema was founded in 1979 and quickly established itself as a pioneer for intensely flavoured Chardonnay and PinotNoir from the cool Sonoma Coast. Continuing this tradition, La Crema pursues the ultimate expression of the Russian River Valley, Carneros and Anderson Valley by handcrafting wines of distinctive flavour which achieve elegance and balance The Sonoma Coast is located on the western coastal fringe of SonomaCounty, starting with a narrow strip at the Mendocino County border and continuing through the mouth of the Russian River; then down to the Sonoma Carneros border of Napa. This AVA is the largest in SonomaCounty yet is the least planted. Known for its dramatic flux in temperature, the warm days and cool nights allow gradual ripening of grapes with fully developed flavours, high natural acidity and low pH. The region’s cold conditions push the limits of grape growing making it particularly well suited for Chardonnay and PinotNoir. Once in the winery this 100% PinotNoir is aged 8 months mainly in French Oak, of which 28% are new barrels. As a result Melissa Stackhouse, La Crema Winemaker considered: 'Aromas of black cherry, licorice and anise. Cherry and plum flavours with hints of leather and tar, balanced acidity and sturdy tannins round out the mouth.' (6 x 75 cl) Price: £88.43

Cartlidge & Brown PinotNoir Napa County California
Description: Medium-full garnet in color, the wine leaps from the glass with loads of baked chery/berry fruit character, along with anise, spice cake, and the 'beety' notes so appreciated in PinotNoir. Showing lots of vigor and sweet juicy fruit on the palate, the wine's muscle is matched by a supple texture and velvety tannins that give it great accessibility. This PinotNoir was produced from grapes grown in four counties: Mendocino , Solano , Sonoma , and Napa . This combination, in a good quality year, has yielded a wine with lots of classic PinotNoir character. The largest fraction, from Mendocino County, was grown in the Redwood Valley area, and created a cherries-and-plums fruit character and a plush texture on which to build the blend. Solano County in turn has given us its usual up-front fruit with ripeness that broadens the palate impression and gives the wine a pleasing and generous keynote. In SonomaCounty , we benefited from a warm late season that produced a deep-colored, complex, mulberry-like fraction, adding some elegant tone and fine spice-cake notes to the whole; while our Napa component, from the southeast part of the valley, contributed spectacular power and depth, with rich stone fruit character, to the final blend. De Loach GREEN VALLEY PinotNoir SonomaCounty California
Description: This quintessential Green Valley PinotNoir boasts dark ruby red hues that open to a bright fruit nose with earthy aromas and a smattering of spice. Followed on the palate by flavors of pomegranate, cherries, raspberry, leather, and crushed rose petals that burst in the mouth and continuously evolve as the wine breathes. A well-structured wine, it is ready to drink now and will age beautifully for up to 10 years. Located in the western hills of the Russian River Valley, Green Valley is one of SonomaCounty's coolest regions. Blankets of fog pushed over from the Pacific Ocean chill the otherwise hot summer evening air and ensure temperate mornings. The valley's optimal weather conditions extend the growing season and produce concentrated berries while soils rich in minerals from an ancient seabed infuse the fruit with nuanced flavours. Green Valley is a blend from several vineyards in the Green Valley appellation. The vineyards represent different clones, each of which contributes something unique to the finished wine. Each vineyard site has been carefully selected to display the bright, crystalline fruit, which is characteristic of classic Green Valley PinotNoir. The Russian River Valley has come to be known as 'America's Burgundy,' and DeLoach is proud to have been an important factor in this distinction. Purchased by Boisset in 2003 and the appointment of new winemaker Greg La Follette marked the start of their return to form for DeLoach. Greg is a Pinot specialist, as his background would suggest, and these are the wines that are the most distinctive in the De Loach range. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £148.07

Hartford Family Winery HARTFORD COURT SEASCAPE VINEYARD PinotNoir Sonoma Coast California
Description: Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the SonomaCounty town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast. The fruit for the Sonoma Coast PinotNoir is composed of exceptional, small block PinotNoir vineyards located in the Sonoma Coast. Estate vineyards are the primary sources for this cepage, which is comprised of selected blocks from our Ross Road Vineyard , our Seascape and Annapolis Vineyards and a handful of growers within the Russian River Valley. Centuries old winemaking traditions from Burgundy are combined with twenty-first century technology to produce this juicy and delicious PinotNoir. Hand harvesting in the cool of the morning, followed by meticulous hand sorting is a pre-requisite before de-stemming directly into open-top fermentors. Individual PinotNoir batches are held at 50 degrees Fahrenheit for five to seven days before the grapes begin to ferment. During this cold soak, and throughout fermentation, the grapes are gently punched down by hand, to aid in the extraction of color and flavor while minimizing the extraction of hard or ‘unripe’ tannins from the seeds or stems. The wine is aged on fine sediment in small French oak barrels for 11 months and is racked once before bottling. Great care from the vineyard to the winery has produced a PinotNoir showing aromas of rose petals, cherries, orange pekoe tea, lavender and smoke that are followed by flavours of ripe, red cherries, roasted plums, cinnamon, chocolate, anise and allspice. The complex aromas and dense, sweet mouthfeel are supported by centered acidity and fine grain tannins.
Francis Ford Coppola DIRECTORS CUT PinotNoir Sonoma Coast California
Description: When Francis Coppola chose SonomaCounty as the home for his new winery, he did so because of the area's beauty and winemaking potential. By selecting Sonoma, Francis provided the winemaker Corey Beck, a Sonoma native, with the opportunity to make wines with grapes grown in his proverbial own backyard. Director's Cut wines are the result-appellation-designated wines from Sonoma'sdiverse and distinctive appellations. Once harvested the crushed grapes immediately and cold soaked the must for threedays to stabilize the colour. It was then fermented in open-top fermenters for nine days, with punch downs three times a day. The result is a silky, yet plush wine with crushed cranberry and allspice aromas hinting at clove and nutmeg. Barrel aged for 12 months in French oak, this is a great reflection of the PinotNoir grape, it has beautiful flavours of cranberry, cherry, dried strawberry, and sweet moderate tannins. 'Winemaking and filmmaking are two great art forms that are very important in the development of California. They both start with raw ingredients-in the case of wine, the land and the grapes, and in the case of film, the script and the actors' performances. The winemaker takes these raw materials and ferments and blends. He says yes to this batch, no to that one. The director does the same thing: a series of yeses and nos, from casting and costuming to edits and sound mixes. In both cases you have to start with top notch raw materials-whether it's the land or a script.' -Francis Ford Coppola (6 x 75 cl) Price: £99.68
