Quinta da Ervamoira 10 Year Old Tawny Port
Description: From one of the 4 estates owned by Ramos Pinto who are renowned for their tawny ports comes this rich and candied yet deliciously fresh Port with some toasty complexity. A 10 year Tawny that is an orange, red, tawny colour with ruby nuances, though it is showing clearly the action of time. The fruit aromas of orange, apricot, plum, are enhanced by the wood aromas of vanilla and old Port cask, while the smooth and full-bodied palate is both fresh and smooth giving way to a light acid and woody note. In 1974, Jose Antonio Ramos Pinto Rosas, the then Chairman of Casa Ramos Pinto, was persistently looking for an quinta on fairly flat land that would allow for mechanisation, as already at that time the lack of and the high cost of labour was being felt in the Douro. Having studied military maps, he found and bought the Quinta de Santa Maria, re-christened as Quinta de Ervamoira, which would become a model quinta in the whole of the Douro region. Two years later, with the help of his nephew Joao Nicolau de Almeida, Jose Rosas embarked on the project to study and select the five best varieties and to work only on the material selected, taking into account not only Port Wine but also Still Wine. This joint work made Ervamoira a pilot project, the first Quinta in the Douro to be planted vertically and by fields. The Quinta de Ervamoira is located in the Douro region, sub-region of the Upper Douro, in the parish of Muxagata, Vila Nova de Foz Caa. With a total surface area of 200 hectares and with altitudes which vary between 110 and 340 metres, this quinta has 150 ha of vines with approximately 450 000 vine stalks planted, of an average age of 15 years old. In Ervamoira, the vertical form of planting has been exclusively used. Only 10% of the varieties produced there are white. Of the remaining 90%, 16% belong to the Tinta Barroca variety, 23% to Touriga Nacional, 13% to Touriga Francesa, 13% to Tinta Roriz, 10% to Tinta da Barca and a further 15% are a mixture. Burmester Ruby Port
Description: W. Burmester was founded in 1750. Historically they bought their young wine from prime vineyards in the Upper Douro from contracted growers. In December 1991 they made a very important purchase of a 120 hectare property in the heart of the upper Douro, QuintaNova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, which has consolidated their reputation as serious Port producers and enabled them to offer their first single quinta Port in the great vintage of 1992. The Amorim family who success in the Portuguese cork industry has now purchased Burmester. It has brought new investment coupled with allowing Burmester to remain 100% under Portuguese ownership. Warre's 1985 Vintage Port
Description: In 1729, the first member of the Warre family, William, arrived in Oporto and he became a partner in the firm and henceforth it was known as Messrs Clarke, Thornton and Warre. Ahead of his time, William Warre was the first British resident to acquire land in Vila Nova da Gaia, across the river from Oporto, later to become the centre for the port companies' lodges and administrative offices. Tradition is important and two or three times a decade, Warre's judge that their wines are of such outstanding quality that they merit consideration to be 'declared' a vintage. When such a wine becomes available it is sure to be a leader in its field and Warre's principal objective is to produce a vintage Port that continues the same superb reputation created by the great Warre's vintages of previous generations. Wines of this quality are made using the traditional treading techniques that have not changed in 2000 years, producing wines with intense colour and flavour. Selected from a number of top quality vineyards, including Warre's own Quinta da Cavadinha, the company's Vintage Port is aged in wooden cask for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered using a normal driven cork. Warre Vintage Port is produced for long aging in the bottle and therefore should always be stored lying down and decanted prior to serving. Tremendous backbone with a rich complexity of balanced fruit showing through. This elegant wine has the characteristic Warre flowery nose and its solidity shows it to be a lasting Vintage. Ramos Pinto 1997 Vintage Port
Description: The Casa Ramos Pinto Port Wines are prepared in the modern vinification centres at the Quinta dos Bons Ares and the Quinta do Bom Retiro, but in the case of special category wines the grapes are trodden in the traditional wine cellars as this age-old technique allows for the juice of the fruit to be extracted more efficiently and less violently. After having concluded the first steps of vinification, the wines are transported to the historical wine cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia, where they undergo a long ageing process. Exceptional deep colour with bluish highlights with complex mixed aromas which resemble the taste of red fruit jams such as ripe plum or berry, with hints of chocolate and pepper. In the mouth, it is elegant and very well structured, full-bodied and fruity. The firm tannins provide it with great potential for ageing. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £585.33

Rozes 1997 LBV Port
Description: In 1855, Ostende Rozes, a fine wine trader in Bordeaux, established the Rozes house. The reputation of the firm's Port wines spread due to their quality. Ostende's son, Edmond Rozes, created the Rozes Port wine brand and was largely responsible for its unique style. Here he created a special, thickset bottle, which is now the brand's symbol and emblem all over the world. After more than 120 years of family ownership, and other successive owners, the firm was acquired by Vranken Monopole in 1999. Rozes differs considerably from the English and Portuguese port wine houses. True to their Bordeaux heritage, Rozes Port wines are elegant, complex and balanced, less fruity and tannic than those of the English style and more generous and richer than those of the Portuguese producers. Produced in the oldest AOC of all, Quinta de Monsul, the Rozes estate in the Douro, allows complete control of pressing, storing and ageing, right from the harvest. The grapes are selected from amongst the very best vineyards in the Douro valley, while the reputation of the Rozes name means that there is a dedicated commitment to express all of the intensity, richness and complexity of each varietal. Rozss LBV is produced from a single and exceptional quality harvest and is produced with the main red grape varieties from the Douro Valley. Before being bottled, the wine ages for 4 years in the traditional oak casks at the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, home of Rozes. Red colour with intense orange shades this port has a complex nose with subtle notes of fruit and violets. A well-balanced wine, with flavours of red fruits and floral notes, showing smooth tannins and a good finish. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £89.43
