J Lohr ARROYO VISTA Chardonnay Monterey California
Description: The Burgundian winemaking techniques used in our Arroyo Vista Chardonnay, including alcoholic and malo-lactic fermentation in barrel with lees stirring and extended aging, amplify an already intensely viscous wine, generated from very low yields and a long and cool growing season. The complex and delicate aromas of peach and nectarine, lime zest, and white blossoms with vanilla and smoky toast from the barrel fermentation are complemented by an almost sweet, concentrated viscous texture that is balanced by the ample acidity for a palate freshening finish. Estancia Pinot Noir Monterey California
Description: Roughly translated from the Spanish word for 'estate' Estancia's name emphasizes the founder's conviction that the world's best wines capture the essence of their place of origin. In 1986, Estancia purchased the former Paul Mason vineyard ranches in the Monterey town of Soledad to established it as the home of Estancia Winery and of cool climate varietals. The 1,200-acre Vineyard is situated on a frost-free benchland above Salinas Valley on California's Central Coast, in the Monterey town of Soledad. Cooled by morning and evening fog but far enough away from Monterey Bay to get a good daily dose of sun. The site is ideal for producing cooler climate varietals like Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay, due to the Sandy, naturally parched soil that produces bright and concentrated flavours that are reflected so well in this wine. Today, Estancia's winemakers strive to combine the best of both worlds- a state of the art winemaking facility, and a traditional, hands-on approach to each grape they produce. In the end, this combination of technology and tradition allows Estancia to deliver the hand-crafted quality for which these wines are known. While the cutting-edge facilities enable Estancia to take advantage of the beneficial advances in winemaking technology. Finally, Estancia's commitment to old world processes results in the complexity and elegance found in artisanal and boutique wines. This 100% Pinot Noir is aged 10 months in 35% New french Oak barrels. This has produced a red coloured wine with purple edges and a rich aroma of ripe dark cherries and wild red berries with hints of spicy cola and soft oak. The dark berry fruit aromas are also evident on the palate of this opulent wine with rich and elegant tannins as well as bright acidity that culminate in a lingering finish.

J Lohr RIVERSTONE Chardonnay Arroyo Secco Monterey California
Description: The 2003 vintage marks the Seventeenth year of producing the Riverstone Chardonnay, from vineyards in the town of Greenfield in Monterey County. Each year, starting in 1995, Lohr have incorporated higher percentages of traditional Burgundian production techniques into Riverstone, until the desired complexity was achieved . This includes more malo-lactic fermentation and sur lie ageing with lees stirring, which in turn creates a wine of greater complexity and nuance. The vines are grown primarily on Elder loam soils underlain by riverstones deposited over thousands of years from the Arroyo Seco River, allowing a four-foot rooting zone that keeps the vine’s vegetative growth and fruit in balance. Additionally, the cool climate and winds of the Salinas Valley extend the growing season and retain the natural grape acids and intense varietal character of the Chardonnay. The Riverstone Chardonnay is straw yellow in colour with aromas of lime and grapefruit zest, nectarine, green apricots and wet stones complemented by a smoky, butter, vanilla and toasted oak bouquet from the barrel fermentation and sur lie ageing. The flavours echo the aromas with citrus, stone fruits, butter, and smoky, toasty oak, producing layers of complexity with an excellent balance of acidity and palate weight. (6 x 75 cl)

Blackstone Winery Chardonnay Monterey County California
Description: Monterey County is quickly emerging as one of the best places in California to grow and produce Chardonnay. The region consistently rewards wine lovers with bright acidity, delicious tropical fruit flavors and creamy textures. Three vineyards provided the majority of the Chardonnay fruit including Terra Ventosa and Vina del Rey in Monterey County, near King City and Castle Coastal Vineyard in the cool Arroyo Seco region of Monterey County. The cool climate and well-drained soils of the Terra Ventosa Vineyard provide ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay, while Vina del Ray Vineyard, also a relatively cool area, produces Chardonnay with ripe citrus and floral aromas while maintaining nice acidity. After harvest, each vineyard lot was individually pressed; then 60% of the blend was cold-tank fermented to preserve the wine's natural vibrancy. Approximately, 40% was barrel fermented to add a layer of creamy complexity to the final blend. The wine was then aged in one-to-three-year-old American and French oak barrels to give the wine a nice toasty note on the finish. This Blackstone Monterey County Chardonnay shows aromas of light tropical fruit, lemon citrus with a touch of mineral notes and pleasing oak. This bright, well-balanced wine has a long, lingering finish. Robert Mondavi PRIVATE SELECTION Chardonnay Central Coast California
Description: At 90 years of age, Robert Mondavi remains the global emissary for these wine. His vision was to create wines in California that belong in the company of the great wines of the world. Robert Mondavi is known for producing hand-crafted wines of distinct style. Representing the best of California wine growing regions, including the legendary Napa Valley, each of the wines offers unique qualities and characteristics. Robert Mondavi have long recognized the distinctive vineyards of California's coast. For decades they have sourced fruit from coastal regions, and in 1994 introduced Robert Mondavi Private Selection wines to exhibit the high quality and character of the coastal grapes and vineyards. Mondavi harvested 96% of the grapes for the Chardonnay from the Central Coast AVA, with 81% of the fruit selected from Monterey County and 15% from Santa Barbara County. The balance of the fruit was selected from the North Coast AVA. The marine influence of these two regions slows ripening of Chardonnay grapes, developing vibrant flavours and retaining crisp acidity. Once harvested the grapes were pressed to capture the fresh, lively flavours. 44% of the wine was fermented in small oak barrels for complexity, with the balance in stainless steel tanks to enhance the fruitiness of the wine. After the wine was fermented dry, a selected portion of the blend undergoes partial malolactic fermentation to give a rich, round mouthfeel. Finally barrel-fermented ageing of the wine occurred sur lie in small French and American oak barrels for 10 months to integrate flavours and add soft oak nuances. To heighten the wine's floral and spice aromatics, Mondavi added dashes of Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Elegant tiers of fresh pear, apple and tropical fruit character mingle with delicate floral accents while the wine's vibrant flavours and beautiful balance come from vineyards along California's Central Coast American Viticultural Area . Here, cool Pacific winds temper the summer sun and give Chardonnay grapes ripe flavours with crisp acidity. Fermentation in a combination of small oak barrels and stainless steel tanks wove oak complexity through the wine's array of fruit flavours, and when the wine was aged on yeast it enhanced the silky texture and lingering finish.
