Quinta dos Malvedos is rated among the finest vineyard properties in the Alto Douro. It lies on the north bank of the River Douro and its south-facing vineyards and very consistent climate ensure that in nearly every year the property will produce wines of first-class quality. The whole vineyard has the highest 'A' classification awarded by the controlling authorities. In 'declared' Vintage years the wines of Malvedos form the fundamental part of the blend which makes up Graham's Vintage Ports. In many other years when there is not enough top quality wine for Graham's to declare a Vintage, the wine of Malvedos is nevertheless so fine that it is bottled on its own, unblended, when two years old and left to mature in bottle like other Vintage Ports. Unlike declared Vintages, Malvedos Vintage Port is normally only shipped when ready for drinking by which time it is usually at least ten years old, although it continues to improve for many years more. Graham's have been offering Malvedos Vintage Port since 1951 and recent years to have been singled out for bottling include 1987, 1988 and 1990. Malvedos Vintage Port throws a similarly heavy crust to Graham's Vintage Ports and careful decanting is therefore required prior to serving. As with a declared Vintage, careful decanting is essential prior to serving. (6 x 75 cl)

Calem QUINTA da FOZ Single Quinta 1984 Vintage Port
Description: Quinta is the Portuguese word for vineyard and thus, whenever a vintage port has the word quinta, one can be guaranteed that grapes come entirely from this place. Quinta da Foz is situated in the heart of Port Wine country with steep terraced slopes reaching all the way down to the Douro River. This special vintage has a deep, dark inky colour. Its rich bouquet is predominantly of forest fruits, notably ripe plums and prunes, with touches of cocoa and spices. On tasting it is mature, complex, full and rounded. Using only the best grapes of the 1986 harvest, this vintage port was aged for two years in fine oak vats before bottling. Ready to drink now, it will continue to mature for decades . As vintage port forms a natural deposit, stand the bottle upright for a couple of hours before careful decanting. This is a good vintage to have after a good dinner accompanied by a rich fruit tart or with mature cheeses (6 x 75 cl)

Burmester Ruby Port
Description: W. Burmester was founded in 1750. Historically they bought their young wine from prime vineyards in the Upper Douro from contracted growers. In December 1991 they made a very important purchase of a 120 hectare property in the heart of the upper Douro, Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, which has consolidated their reputation as serious Port producers and enabled them to offer their first single quinta Port in the great vintage of 1992. The Amorim family who success in the Portuguese cork industry has now purchased Burmester. It has brought new investment coupled with allowing Burmester to remain 100% under Portuguese ownership. The high quality of their Ruby and Tawny belies the competitive price at which they are offered, and they have many followers who enjoy their rich berry fruit characters. In addition to Vintage Port, Burmester also have an exciting range of old, sometimes very old, 'Colheitas' or vintage Tawny, which are today gaining recognition and popularity in the U.K. Ruby colour, strong fruit structure and firm balancing tannin structure (6 x 75 cl)

Taylor's QUINTA de VARGELLAS Port
Description: Taylor's has owned the beautiful estate of Vargellas for over a century, and it is acknowledged as one of the great vineyards of the world. It has the highest percentage of old vines of any quinta in the Douro, 60% being over 75 years old. Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Ports are ready to drink from ten years, but will go on developing for another twenty years. Quinta de Vargellas is arguably the most renowned and prestigious estate in the Douro Valley. The reputation of its wines dates back to the 1820s. Since its purchase by Taylor's over a century ago, the wines of Vargellas have formed the backbone of the legendary Taylor's vintage ports. In certain years, however, when a Taylor Vintage is not declared, the best wine of Vargellas has traditionally been bottled as a single-Quinta vintage port. These elegant, scented vintages were initially bottled for the partners' own cellar. However, Taylor's was later to become the earliest shipper to develop a market for this increasingly important category of vintage, and normally released when ready to drink -at least ten years after the harvest. An unseasonably hot spring in 1995 resulted in early budding and by mid April the vines were showing good growth. Conditions for flowering in May were near perfect and once the flowers had set it was obvious that the crop would be larger than usual. A cool early summer was followed by very high temperatures in August. Rain fell on 5th and 7th September and this brought on the grapes to their final ripeness. Picking started at Quinta de Vargellas on 13th September, a week later than most of the region. Conditions were perfect and the highest sugar readings in years were recorded; and the yield was also high. Due to the cool temperatures the fermentation periods were longer than usual ensuring a great extraction of fruit, flavour and colour. Very full colour and concentrated nose. Splendid fruit, a wine of real power and strength. One of the few with a real third dimension on the palate. Real weight and concentration and intensity. Very fine indeed. (12 x 75 cl)

This is a 'single quinta' wine, made in exactly the same way as Taylor's Vintage Port, but using only the grapes from this individual property, trodden on the estate. Only small quantities are made, and only in very good years and this Port is a deep purple/black colour with attractive perfumed violet aromas. Showing an enormously rich, concentrated aromatic nose it develops lovely fresh berry and liquorice flavours on the palate. A wine with big fruit and tannins in perfect balance it is rich and concentrated with a nice lingering finish. BR

Rozes 1997 LBV Port
Description: In 1855, Ostende Rozes, a fine wine trader in Bordeaux, established the Rozes house. The reputation of the firm's Port wines spread due to their quality. Ostende's son, Edmond Rozes, created the Rozes Port wine brand and was largely responsible for its unique style. Here he created a special, thickset bottle, which is now the brand's symbol and emblem all over the world. After more than 120 years of family ownership, and other successive owners, the firm was acquired by Vranken Monopole in 1999. Rozes differs considerably from the English and Portuguese port wine houses. True to their Bordeaux heritage, Rozes Port wines are elegant, complex and balanced, less fruity and tannic than those of the English style and more generous and richer than those of the Portuguese producers. Produced in the oldest AOC of all, Quinta de Monsul, the Rozes estate in the Douro, allows complete control of pressing, storing and ageing, right from the harvest. The grapes are selected from amongst the very best vineyards in the Douro valley, while the reputation of the Rozes name means that there is a dedicated commitment to express all of the intensity, richness and complexity of each varietal. Rozss LBV is produced from a single and exceptional quality harvest and is produced with the main red grape varieties from the Douro Valley. Before being bottled, the wine ages for 4 years in the traditional oak casks at the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, home of Rozes. Red colour with intense orange shades this port has a complex nose with subtle notes of fruit and violets. A well-balanced wine, with flavours of red fruits and floral notes, showing smooth tannins and a good finish. (6 x 75 cl)
