Horse Mountain Pinotage Voor-Paardeberg Paarl RSA
Description: Horse Mountain Wines embody a new spirit of adventure in winemaking in the Cape with a fresh, entrepreneurial approach, unfettered by conventional tradition but rooted in the tried and tested philosophy that fine wine is made in the vineyard. These wines come from a former dairy farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain between Paarl and Wellington. The 217ha property was acquired in 1997 after its potential as a suitable terroir for quality wine production had been identified. Since then, energetic owner Craig Lardner, a former property developer with a new-found passion for winemaking, and innovative consultant viticulturist Paul Wallace, have systematically selected nearly 50ha of the 150ha of viticulturally viable ground for painstaking preparation and careful cultivation to five grape varieties. The grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that flourish on the high-lying, high-potential Vilefontes soils. While the Merlot and Pinotage have settled in the lower-lying, rich red Swartland/Glenrosa soils and Cabernet Franc does well in the similarly low-altitude Estcourt soils. Such significant variations in soil comnbined with an exceptional climate compared with conditions in the surrounding Paarl wine growing district, earned this new viticultural pocket its own 'ward' status in 2003. Horse Mountain wines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. This wine is a bright, deep ruby colour with sweet, ripe berry fruit aromas and flavours, underpinned by firm, but soft tannins. An intriguing hint of banana on the nose it is a typical Cape Pinotage with plenty of character it benefits from judicious wooding in a combination of French and American oak barrels. (6 x 75 cl)

Horse Mountain wines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. The fruit came from single block of four-year-old vines planted in rich red, well-drained Vilefontes soil types on south east slopes of Far Horizons Wine Estate in Voor Paardeberg, Paarl about 50km north of Cape Town. The 12 hectares are trellised on the progressive Australian VSP trellising system resulting in the intense fruit being grown on the vine. Made for Horse Mountain Wines by winemaker Charles Stassen, the wine underwent ageing in new French and American oak barrels for 9 months. Full of fruit, this is a big styled shiraz reflecting the intense fruit from the Voor Paardeberg ward within Paarl. A deep, complex, intriguing wine already approachable but with French and 20% American oak ageing will also show wonderfully in years to come. (6 x 75 cl)

Querciabella PALAFRENO Tuscana IGT
Description: Querciabella, founded in 1974 began life as a 1 hectare vineyard but today has 26 hectares of vines producing great wine with an international reputation. Concentrating on small yields where the emphasis is placed on concentration and richness of the fruit, the vineyard is run according to biodynamic priciples that exceed the European Standard.. Querciabella is a Chianti Classico DOCG that presently produces four wines from the vineyards of its Chianti Classico estate in Greve in Chianti. Batar is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc; Chianti Classico; Camartina a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon while Palafreno, a new release, is a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese. Palafreno, the first new release from Querciabella in fifteen years, is a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese from some of the best vineyards of the estate in Greve in Chianti. Rich, deep, and elegant, it needs to be decanted, and left 'breathing' for at least one hour to be enjoyed at its best. Its name is an ancient Italian word designating a noble riding horse used by medieval knights for travel, parades or tournaments. Great care is taken from the vineyard to the winery when producing this blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Sangiovese which is released no sooner than 26 months after harvest. This wine is dominated by blackberry and vanilla on the nose while showing good concentration and depth on the palate, balanced acidity and enjoyable finish. Available in Magnum bottles. Jackson Wine Estates STONESTREET Sauvignon Blanc Alexander Valley
Description: J. Stonestreet & Sons Vineyard & Winery began in the autumn of 1989 when Jess Jackson purchased a small vineyard and winery in the rolling hills bordering southern Alexander Valley. He named the winery in honor of his late father, Jess Stonestreet Jackson, and dedicated it to the task of handcrafting wines using traditional methods while showcasing modern techniques. Stonestreet quickly garnered international acclaim for powerful red and luscious white wines. Following this early success, Jess Jackson acquired the nearby Alexander Mountain Estate in 1995 and focused Stonestreet on mountain wines, particularly the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, in addition to small amounts of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from older vineyards on the mountain. The Upper Barn name comes from its historical use as the place where horses were changed when crossing over Alexander Mountain Estate and the Mayacamas Mountains and at 1,800 feet above sea level, the vineyard is an impressive site. With its dramatic views, shallow gravelly soils and cool climate, this seven-acre vineyard consistently produces low yields of intense, mineral-laden Sauvignon Blanc. Grapes for the Upper Barn Sauvignon Blanc were harvested with flavours of grapefruit and ripe melon. After pressing, the juice was barrel fermented to add spicy oak characteristics and a lush palate. This wine did not receive malolactic fermentation or stirring of lees. Crisp fruit flavours of ripe melon, fig, lemon and grapefruit complemet the medium to full-bodied style of this well made Sauvignon Blanc. (6 x 75 cl)
