Robert Mondavi is known for producing hand-crafted wines of distinct style. Representing the best of California wine growing regions, including the legendary Napa Valley, each of the wines offers unique qualities and characteristics. Robert Mondavi have long recognized the distinctive vineyards of California's coast. For decades they have sourced fruit from coastal regions, and in 1994 introduced Robert Mondavi Private Selection wines to exhibit the high quality and character of the coastal grapes and vineyards. For vivid fruit expression, Mondavi harvested 95% of the grapes from Monterey County, with the balance from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Approximately half of the Pinot Noir grapes were harvested from its own vineyards, the balance from well known local growers. This wine has a little Syrah and this has come from both San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties. To achieve the fruit-forward style of this Pinot Noir Mondavi lightly crushed the grapes and fermented the must in temperature controlled tanks. After the wine fermented dry , it was left on the skins with the wine for a total of 13 days to naturally soften tannins and develop varietal complexity. The wine completed malolactic fermentation for roundness and depth and was aged for five months, in a combination of new and older French and American oak barrels, to add toasty nuances to the lush fruit flavours. Additionally, a blend of 5% Syrah enhances the spicy profile of the wine. The wine's silky layers of cherry, raspberry and red plum intertwine with fragrant allspice and floral accents. Ageing in small, French oak barrels adds spicy, toasty nuances that continue through the lingering finish. (6 x 75 cl)

One of the most temperamental grape varieties, PinotNoir vines thrive in these the cool, windy rolling hills that span the southernmost tip of Napa and Sonoma Valleys, developing small crops of vibrantly flavored fruit. Extremely gentle handling through all phases of winemaking enabled Mondavi to bottle this wine without filtration after 10 months of barrel ageing. This has produced a deep red coloured wine with aromas of black cherry, rose, forest and warm spice complexity that fan out across the palate. Mondavi hand-selected 93% of the grapes for this wine from the Los Carneros region, which spans the southernmost tip of Napa and Sonoma Valleys. This region, designated an American Viticultural Area in 1983, has become famous for developing intensely-flavored PinotNoir grapes that produce wines with vibrant fruit character. The Los Carneros AVA is known for its strong winds, nutrient-lean, clay loam soils and a nightly blanket of cold fog rolling off the San Francisco Bay. 45% of the harvested came from grapes at the RobertMondavi Huichica Hills Vineyard, a site planted to more than 23 clones of PinotNoir for flavour complexity in the wine. The clones were selected for their small, flavour-intense berries, looser clusters and color intensity. The balance of the wine comes from other cool climate vineyards with complementary flavours.
