James Herrick Syrah Vin de Pays d'Oc
Description: The James Herrick winery is situated in the coastal Mediterranean town of Narbonne in Southern France. The region is steeped in ancient Roman history and the area possesses an array of ancient artefacts. One of the most common sites are the milestones found along the old Roman roads, situated at 1000 pace intervals. Thus this wine has been named Millia Passum, which means 1000 paces, and is a tribute to the Roman heritage of the region. The inscription on the label mirrors the inscription found on the milestone outside the James Herrick winery. 10% of the blend is aged in new American oak. Nose: A concentrated nose of blackberries, black olives and pepper. Palate: A full-bodied palate, saturated with rich, ripe berry fruits. Fine tannins lead into a long, silky finish. This wine is enjoyable now, and will benefit from short term cellaring. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £66.55

Domaines Gerard Bertrand DOMAINE DE VILLEMAJOU Corbieres-Boutenac
Description: The terroir of Corbieres Boutenac is composed of decomposed clay and limestone soil, covered with pebbles and gravel, allowing a long lifespan for the vines. The Domaine de Villemajou comprises 90 hectares of south and south-east facing vineyards in the terroir of Boutenac, renowned as the best area of the Corbieres appellation. The clay and limestone gravelly stones heat up in the daytime and then reflect the heat onto the vines at night. Winemaking on the domaine dates back to Roman times when it was named the Villa Major meaning the big villa which then housed the emperor Avitus. It is the oldest winemaking property in the Corbieres where pieces of Roman vases and other antiquities are frequently dug up in the vineyards. The varieties are old Carignan , Grenache , Syrah and Mourvedre while the grapes are picked by hand and placed in cement vats for carbonic maceration and thereafter into oak for maturation. Black fruits dominate as berries and cherries, backed up by liquorice, vanilla, balsamic aromas and masses of sweet spice. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £77.68
