Knappstein Shiraz Clare Valley South Australia
Description: Ripe berry fruit with a spicy peppery note. A silky texture. Fine natural tannins. Very enjoyable drinking now, or cellar for up to ten years.Clare Valley Shiraz is a regional speciality. Early in the 1980's our shiraz vines were grafted over to other more commercially viable varieties. The wheel has turned full circle and we have 'ungrafted' the chardonnay. The vines have reverted to original root stock, and we're in the exciting position of soon to have thirty-year old shiraz vines which in future vintages will be used for our Knappstein Shiraz. Skillogalee Shiraz Clare Valley South Australia
Description: Shiraz is probably the second wine style after Riesling for which the Clare Valley is well known. The fruit for this Skillogalee Shiraz was hand-picked from low yielding, unirrigated vines growing on the slopes around the homestead, around 450m above sea level. This Shiraz is another dark, rich wine in the Skillogalee tradition, with intense colour and powerful, warm aromas and flavours. On the nose and the palate there are berryfruit and plum characters and hints of pepper, eucalyptus and mint can sometimes be found. Tannin structure is fine but firm and there is a good level of natural acidity. The fruit was destalked and partially crushed, fermented, and then gently basket-pressed. Malo-lactic fermentation took place partially in tank with completion in barrel. Maturation for 24 months in a combination of French and American oak hogsheads has added considerable balance and complexity. Skillogalee is a 60 hectare property located within South Australia's Clare Valley wine region. Within this region, it occupies the western extreme of the Sevenhill sub-region and is bounded on the western side by the Spring Gully Conservation Park, home of the rare Red Stringy Bark gum tree. It is around 8km south of Clare township and about 135km due north of Adelaide. In the early 1840's, the pioneer and explorer John Horrocks settled at Penworththam, named after his home town in England. From here, he explored further north in the Flinders ranges, using Afghan camels and looking for land suitable for settlement. On one such expedition, Horrocks' party was beset by illness, injuries and bad weather. Having run short of provisions, they survived only by making a 'skillogalee' or 'skilly' (6 x 75 cl)
