Sean Thackrey ANDROMEDA DEVIL'S GULCH RANCH PinotNoirCalifornia Description: Sean Thackrey’s has a slightly ramshackle winery in cool Bolinas, just north of San Francisco. Something of an independently minded intellectual, he makes wines to please himself and hence the unconventional range of wines. One of the oldest vineyards in Marin County is Devil's Gulch Vineyard, owned and farmed by Mark Pasternak. 'Marin is clearly cooler then Carneros or Santa Barbara, more like the Sonoma Coast around Freestone,' says Pasternak. He adds that 'because of these cool growing conditions Marin Pinots are more elegant, with more black fruit nuances.' Sean Thackrey is one of the producers that purchase PinotNoir from Devil's Gulch vineyrad and he has produced a rich dense ruby coloured wine showing plum and blackberry aromas. In the mouth the plumy fruit flavours develop while french oak characters are evident in this well structured PinotNoir that has a mouth coating finish. Limited Availability. Jackson Wine Estates CAMBRIA JULIA'S VINEYARD PinotNoirSanta Maria Valley California Description: Cambria's proximity to the ocean and east-west orientation gives this 1,405-acre property the diversity it needs to grow Chardonnay, PinotNoir and Syrah under perfectly suited conditions. As an estate property, Cambria's Vineyard Manager and Winemaker work in tandem to perfect the winegrowing process. Together, they select only the finest grapes from the estate to bear the Cambria name. Every grape is hand-harvested and crafted into wine with the utmost care and respect for the varietal. This 100% Estate grown PinotNoir has spent 6 months ageing in French oak and Winemaker Denise Shurtleff considered: 'Julia’s PinotNoir offers abundant ripe cherry, grape, and strawberry flavours that open into underlying earth tones. A round mid-palate leads to vanilla and cinnamon spice on the silky finish.' In 1986 Barbara Banke and her husband, Jess Jackson, bought the premium acres of the Tepusquet Vineyard with the intent of establishing a family-owned estate property that farmed and crafted exceptional wines. Since then, her vision has become reality. Cambria has carved out a reputation for lush, tropical Chardonnay, velvety-textured PinotNoir and rich, spicy Syrah, all grown on one contiguous property. In recent years Cambria has concentrated its vineyard and winemaking resources into amplifying different aspects of the Cambria estate. This effort launched an in-depth exploration of the vineyard and varieties on this cool-climate property. The result has elevated the quality of Cambria's core wines, created new site-focused and distinct winemaking styles, and dramatically highlighted the bold flavours of each variety. Robert Mondavi PRIVATE SELECTION PinotNoir Central Coast California Description: At 90 years of age, Robert Mondavi remains the global emissary for these wine. His vision was to create wines in California that belong in the company of the great wines of the world. Robert Mondavi is known for producing hand-crafted wines of distinct style. Representing the best of California wine growing regions, including the legendary Napa Valley, each of the wines offers unique qualities and characteristics. Robert Mondavi have long recognized the distinctive vineyards of California's coast. For decades they have sourced fruit from coastal regions, and in 1994 introduced Robert Mondavi Private Selection wines to exhibit the high quality and character of the coastal grapes and vineyards. For vivid fruit expression, Mondavi harvested 95% of the grapes from Monterey County, with the balance from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Approximately half of the PinotNoir grapes were harvested from its own vineyards, the balance from well known local growers. This wine has a little Syrah and this has come from both San Luis Obispo and Monterey Counties. To achieve the fruit-forward style of this PinotNoir Mondavi lightly crushed the grapes and fermented the must in temperature controlled tanks. After the wine fermented dry , it was left on the skins with the wine for a total of 13 days to naturally soften tannins and develop varietal complexity. The wine completed malolactic fermentation for roundness and depth and was aged for five months, in a combination of new and older French and American oak barrels, to add toasty nuances to the lush fruit flavours. Additionally, a blend of 5% Syrah enhances the spicy profile of the wine. The wine's silky layers of cherry, raspberry and red plum intertwine with fragrant allspice and floral accents. Ageing in small, French oak barrels adds spicy, toasty nuances that continue through the lingering finish. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £64.16
