1997 Red Wines

Name: Jackson Wine Estates ATALON MOUNTAIN ESTATES Merlot Napa Valley California
Where it's from:  USA, California, Napa Valley
Price per case: £266.50
Bottles per case: 12 x 75 cl
Style: Powerful Reds
Description: Thomas Peffer Atalon Winemaker considered: 'The Mountain Estates Merlot captures the bold expression of fruit farmed on mountain vineyard sites. The mountain mesoclimate, created by higher altitude, steep terrain and rocky soils, restricts vine growth and naturally limits vigor. As a result the vines yield fewer berry clusters which are smaller in size with thick skins and boast saturated, intense flavours. 'This a serious Merlot that offers extreme drinking pleasure. It exhibits aromas of black fruit with mineral and smoky cedar spice notes. Rich and intense, the wine is framed by sturdy yet balanced tannins, lush viscosity and flavours of chocolate, black fruit and cherries with a hint of ripe plum in the background.' Part of Jackson Wine Estates Atalon has emerged on the wine scene with a provenance firmly rooted in the Napa Valley. The soul of the Atalon story is a ghost winery dating back to 1888. Built by General W.S. Keyes, the white-stone building atop Howell Mountain claims a stake in Napa Valley viticultural lore. At the turn of the twentieth century, General Keyes was producing wines considered to be among the best in Napa County from this old landmark. From the 1970's the Cabernet Sauvignon vines surrounding the winery helped to establish the reputation of several boutique Napa wineries, including Liparita, Duckhorn and La Jota. In 1996 the famed Howell Mountain property was renamed the Keyes Vineyard in honor of the early farmer's pioneering viticultural contributions. Today, the historic ghost winery stands as a strong reminder of a 150-year old tradition of growing wine grapes within the thirty-mile stretch of the Napa Valley frontier. In 1997, Atalon was created to revive the vineyard's past accomplishments and to build on the area's reputation for producing remarkable red wines. Although inspired by ghosts long gone, Atalon wines reflect a modern understanding of farming Napa's rugged mountains and valleys for the most balanced and expressive wines. To integrate the diverse flavors found throughout the Napa Valley, the wines take us beyond the ridges of Howell Mountain into the broader domain of neighboring appellations. Atalon wines are a comprehensive exploration of the Napa Valley appellation. Drawing fruit from selected vineyards, the wines are a composite of vineyards stretching from the rolling hills of Napa-Carneros in the south to the peaks of Howell Mountain in the north. Atalon is dedicated to the true essence and flavor of the Napa Valley, a distinction defined by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vineyards are chosen for proven quality from the best known districts known to grow high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, including Oakville, Rutherford, Mount Veeder, Atlas Peak, Napa Carneros and Howell Mountain. Atalon produces two tiers of wine: a Napa Valley designated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a Mountain Estate designated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Napa Valley wines are packed with ripe, opulent fruit, gentle tannins and rich textures long associated with the Napa Valley. The Mountain Estate wines are focused expressions of mountain fruit (12 x 75 cl)

Jackson Wine Estates ATALON Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley California
Description: Thomas Peffer Atalon Winemaker considered: 'This wine is expressive of what Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon can be at its best. A juicy core of fruit floods the mouth, laden with ripe cherries, dark plums, peppery herbs and blackberry. Blending from select vineyard blocks in the valley’s middle corridor offers a pleasing blend of supple tannins from Oakville and Rutherford. Darker fruit flavours, richness and bigger, chalkier tannins are from our sites in the Howell Mountain and Stagecoach vineyards along the Vaca mountain range. French oak adds delicate spice and vanilla.' Part of Jackson Wine Estates Atalon has emerged on the wine scene with a provenance firmly rooted in the Napa Valley. Stella Bella Wines SUCKFIZZLE Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Western Australia
Description: Suckfizzle is a small vineyard located at the south-westerly extreme of the Margaret River grape growing region and since the first release in 1997 the Suckfizzle wines have developed a cult following. Only two wines are made in the small vineyard. The white is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the percentages a reflection of seasonal fortune. Horse Mountain QUAGGA RIDGE Red Voor-Paardeberg Paarl RSA
Description: Horse Mountain Wines embody a new spirit of adventure in winemaking in the Cape with a fresh, entrepreneurial approach, unfettered by conventional tradition but rooted in the tried and tested philosophy that fine wine is made in the vineyard. These wines come from a former dairy farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain between Paarl and Wellington. The 217ha property was acquired in 1997 after its potential as a suitable terroir for quality wine production had been identified. Since then, energetic owner Craig Lardner, a former property developer with a new-found passion for winemaking, and innovative consultant viticulturist Paul Wallace, have systematically selected nearly 50ha of the 150ha of viticulturally viable ground for painstaking preparation and careful cultivation to five grape varieties. The grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that flourish on the high-lying, high-potential Vilefontes soils. While the Merlot and Pinotage have settled in the lower-lying, rich red Swartland/Glenrosa soils and Cabernet Franc does well in the similarly low-altitude Estcourt soils. Such significant variations in soil comnbined with an exceptional climate compared with conditions in the surrounding Paarl wine growing district, earned this new viticultural pocket its own 'ward' status in 2003. Horse Mountain wines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. The wine is made from a balance of fine quality Merlot and Pinotage grapes from the Voor Paardeberg region. As a result this wine has a soft, smooth berry ripeness produced from a fine marriage of noble red grape varieties. The wine has a delicious juicy middle palate with no evidence of excessive sharpness or tannins. (12 x 75 cl)

Ramos Pinto 1997 Vintage Port
Description: The Casa Ramos Pinto Port Wines are prepared in the modern vinification centres at the Quinta dos Bons Ares and the Quinta do Bom Retiro, but in the case of special category wines the grapes are trodden in the traditional wine cellars as this age-old technique allows for the juice of the fruit to be extracted more efficiently and less violently. After having concluded the first steps of vinification, the wines are transported to the historical wine cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia, where they undergo a long ageing process. Exceptional deep colour with bluish highlights with complex mixed aromas which resemble the taste of red fruit jams such as ripe plum or berry, with hints of chocolate and pepper. In the mouth, it is elegant and very well structured, full-bodied and fruity. The firm tannins provide it with great potential for ageing. (12 x 75 cl)

Rozes 1997 LBV Port
Description: In 1855, Ostende Rozes, a fine wine trader in Bordeaux, established the Rozes house. The reputation of the firm's Port wines spread due to their quality. Ostende's son, Edmond Rozes, created the Rozes Port wine brand and was largely responsible for its unique style. Here he created a special, thickset bottle, which is now the brand's symbol and emblem all over the world. After more than 120 years of family ownership, and other successive owners, the firm was acquired by Vranken Monopole in 1999. Rozes differs considerably from the English and Portuguese port wine houses. True to their Bordeaux heritage, Rozes Port wines are elegant, complex and balanced, less fruity and tannic than those of the English style and more generous and richer than those of the Portuguese producers. Produced in the oldest AOC of all, Quinta de Monsul, the Rozes estate in the Douro, allows complete control of pressing, storing and ageing, right from the harvest. The grapes are selected from amongst the very best vineyards in the Douro valley, while the reputation of the Rozes name means that there is a dedicated commitment to express all of the intensity, richness and complexity of each varietal. Rozss LBV is produced from a single and exceptional quality harvest and is produced with the main red grape varieties from the Douro Valley. Before being bottled, the wine ages for 4 years in the traditional oak casks at the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, home of Rozes. Red colour with intense orange shades this port has a complex nose with subtle notes of fruit and violets. A well-balanced wine, with flavours of red fruits and floral notes, showing smooth tannins and a good finish. (6 x 75 cl)

Allegrini PALAZZO della TORRE IGT Veneto
Description: A blend of 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese, the Palazzo della Torre is a full-bodied, supple wine, made in an innovative ripasso style. The young wine is refermented with just-crushed dried grapes, rather than the leeched skins of Amarone, as was traditional. The dried grape character makes it a baby Amarone in style. Palazzo della Torre, a single vineyard wine, fled the safety of DOC to become IGT from the 1997 vintage. The Allegrinis were fed up with the failure of the law to catch up with the quality demands of the modern consumer. They had long ceased putting Molinara in the blend, yet the law had failed to change. Similarly, they had increased the level of Corvina beyond the permitted maximum in search of better depth in the wine. The quality of all the wines Allegrini produce from their 70 hectares of vineyard is impeccable. They have fruit, balance, intensity, length, elegance, tipicity and, above all, drinkability. In short, they are among the elite of the world’s best producers of red wines. (6 x 75 cl)

Yering Station RESERVE Shiraz Viognier Yarra Valley Victoria
Description: Established in 1838 as the first vineyard in Victoria, the winery was built by Paul de Castella in 1859 from hand-made bricks, it originally housed some very advanced wine-making equipment that Paul de Castella had imported from France. A blend of Shiraz 95% and Viognier 5% the fruit comes primarily from the same vineyard that produced the 1997 and 1998 Reserve Shiraz. The grapes come from a small 2.5 acre vineyard planted in the mid 1980's on an easterly aspect. The vines are typically low cropping and in 2001 produced just 1.2 tonnes of grapes per acre. This wine represents a change in winemaking technique and style for Yering Station. The addition of a small amount of Viognier to fermenting grapes is a technique used for many years by the producers in the Northern Rhone appelation Cote Rotie and applied with quite some success to this Yering Station Reserve. Dark red wine with spice and black pepper aromas dominating the nose, underneath there is a complex array of violet, blackberry jam, liquorice and fine oak. The wine has a silky rich palate with wonderful poise. There are layers of concentrated fine-grained tannins with loads of powerful fruit supporting. The flavours cascade through the palate and provide a wonderful length of flavour. (6 x 75 cl)
