This huge potential was something that was recognised back in 1983 by Jane Hunter and her late husband Ernie when they founded their first fledgling winery in the picturesque Wairau Valley. Since those early years Jane has been owner, viticulturist and managing director of what has become one of New Zealand's most established wineries, Hunter's Wines. Under her expertise, the original vineyard area has increased by 2.5 times its original size and the company's annual output has grown to around 60,000 cases of wine, nearly half of which is exported. The wine has matured in oak for nine months with twenty per cent new french oak. This has produced a Pinot Noir with a deep red colour showing plum, spice, cherry and oak on the nose. The name Miru Miru literally translates as Maori for 'bubbles' and this hand-harvested fruit was gently pressed and the resultant juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks before undergoing full malolactic fermentation. This sparkling wine is blend of Chardonnay 54%, Pinot Noir 38%, Pinot Meunier 8%. It has produced a well balanced wine with gentle yeast, rich fruit nose followed by a mouth filling mousse and a soft luscious palate that explodes into citrus/peach flavours. Full-bodied with a round creamy palate and plenty of peach and grapefruit flavours married with the vanillan french oak.
