Horse Mountain QUAGGA RIDGE Red Voor-Paardeberg Paarl RSA
Description: Horse Mountain Wines embody a new spirit of adventure in winemaking in the Cape with a fresh, entrepreneurial approach, unfettered by conventional tradition but rooted in the tried and tested philosophy that fine wine is made in the vineyard. These wines come from a former dairy farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain between Paarl and Wellington. The 217ha property was acquired in 1997 after its potential as a suitable terroir for quality wine production had been identified. Since then, energetic owner Craig Lardner, a former property developer with a new-found passion for winemaking, and innovative consultant viticulturist Paul Wallace, have systematically selected nearly 50ha of the 150ha of viticulturally viable ground for painstaking preparation and careful cultivation to five grape varieties. The grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that flourish on the high-lying, high-potential Vilefontes soils. While the Merlot and Pinotage have settled in the lower-lying, rich red Swartland/Glenrosa soils and Cabernet Franc does well in the similarly low-altitude Estcourt soils. Such significant variations in soil comnbined with an exceptional climate compared with conditions in the surrounding Paarl wine growing district, earned this new viticultural pocket its own 'ward' status in 2003. Horse Mountain wines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. The wine is made from a balance of fine quality Merlot and Pinotage grapes from the Voor Paardeberg region. As a result this wine has a soft, smooth berry ripeness produced from a fine marriage of noble red grape varieties. The wine has a delicious juicy middle palate with no evidence of excessive sharpness or tannins. (12 x 75 cl)

Lisa McGuigan Tempus Two PEWTER LABEL Shiraz Barossa Valley
Description: Colour Dense violet purple Nose Powerful ribena fruit coupled with oak derived lifted buttery char. Palate A full bodied wine with fine integrated tannins and warm alcohol finish. Strong Shiraz fruit flavours of pepper/spice, cassis and earthy overtones are present and are complimented by a subtle underlay of new American oak. General The 1999 vintage was cool and dry with very little rain resulting in good quality clean fruit. The Vine Vale Vineyard consists entirely of old vines dry grown on a friable sandy loam which results in low cropping levels with the fruit being intensely flavoured. The fruit was allowed to hang on the vine until it began to show a slight dehydration at which point it was harvested and was transported to a crushing facility where it was crushed and chilled to 5 degrees and loaded onto a tanker and transported to the Hunter Valley. The must was onloaded into rotofermenters and allowed to warm up for two days before being inoculated with a selected yeast strain. Fermentation was conducted at 25 degrees C for approximately 4 days and then the grapes were pressed off through a Willmes airbag press to produce this intensely coloured wine with powerful fruit and soft tannins. This is a style that is capable of being cellared for decades or being consumed young when the fruit is dominating. (6 x 75 cl)

Francis Ford Coppola DIAMOND COLLECTION Ivory Label Cabernet Sauvignon California
Description: Since its inception, the Francis Coppola Diamond Collection has been an expansive endeavor to create consistently high-quality wines that are pure expressions of each varietal. They sought out vineyard sites across California, which would ensure superior grapes year-after-year, and employ precise winemaking techniques to showcase the true character of the fruit. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon this dark garnet coloured wine that has spent 14 months in oak. This has produced a wine showing aromas of plums, red currants, and vanilla while on the palate there are blackberry, plum, and rum raisin flavours. 'Winemaking and filmmaking are two great art forms that are very important in the development of California. They both start with raw ingredients-in the case of wine, the land and the grapes, and in the case of film, the script and the actors' performances. The winemaker takes these raw materials and ferments and blends. He says yes to this batch, no to that one. The director does the same thing: a series of yeses and nos, from casting and costuming to edits and sound mixes. In both cases you have to start with top notch raw materials-whether it's the land or a script.' -Francis Ford Coppola (6 x 75 cl)

Dry Creek Vineyards Merlot Dry Creek Valley California
Description: Dry Creek Vineyard was the first new winery to be established in the Dry Creek Valley since the days of Prohibition, when David Stare arrived in 1972. Today, Dry Creek Vineyard wines are easy to recognise due to the spirited yacht paintings that appear on the label of each bottle. David Stare's pioneering vision launched a new era of premium wine production in the Dry Creek Valley. Inspired by his travels throughout the traditional wine regions of France and Germany, Dave's focus was ever on quality. To persue this focus, small batch winemaking has been adopted because individual-lot winemaking promotes increased knowledge about how to manage each vineyard while offering maximum blending options and enhanced quality control. Dry Creek Vineyard insists on crafting each lot of wine separately with each vineyard lot crushed, fermented, and barrel aged separately. Approximately 75-100 different wines are produced each vintage, where fining is the exception, not the rule. This Merlot has a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to produce a lovely red coloured wine with a fragrant bouquet of berries and cedar while there are aromas of berry flavours and cinnamon-clove accents. Tightly structured, the dark forrest fruit flavours abound while the wine lingers for a long period on the palate and finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Joseph Phelps Vineyards INSIGNIA Napa Valley California
Description: Founded in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is an independent, estate-based winery located outside of St. Helena. Perched on a knoll in bucolic Spring Valley, the graceful redwood winery overlooks vineyard-studded hills, the town of St. Helena and the Mayacamas Mountains to the west. Long known for his innovative spirit and passion for quality, Joe Phelps pioneered a number of 'firsts' in the early years of the winery. The 1974 Insignia — released in the spring of 1978 — was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. The release of the 1974 Syrah in 1977 sparked industry-wide interest in a remarkable French varietal whose plantings in California had disappeared and been virtually forgotten for over half a century. And in 1990, after years of research, a whole new family of Rhone-style wines was introduced which today includes Syrah, Viognier and a Chateauneuf-du-Pape style blend called Le Mistral. This Red is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, primarily from estate-owned vineyards in Stag's Leap and Rutherford, with additional fruit coming from independent growers in Rutherford, Carneros and Coombsville. The Grapes were harvested between at an average 24.0° (12 x 75 cl)

Catherine Marshall Wines BWC Syrah Mourvedre Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Restrained, yet robust blend of black pepper, cumin, cardamom seeds and ripe plums. Mineral oak tannins provide a persistent backdrop. 86.5% Syrah: 13.5% Mourvedre. In 1996, Cathy Marshall decided to have a braai for her friends. The party turned into something of a breakthrough evening when they decided to crush some grapes that she had bought, barefooted in her garage. Nine months later the original party gathered again to bottle the wine by hand. Barefoot is now known as BMC wines, and by 1998 Cathy was handling 16 tonnes of grapes rather than the original one tonne. However, the annual harvest ritual of the 'footstomp bash' continues, but the wine is now made in the 'high tech' wineries of Amani and Yonder Hill. The company does not own vineyards, but sources the grapes from some of the best vineyards to make top quality wines. This is in the tradition of the French 'negociants' -- with a South African flavour. BMC wines are terrific to drink and the bottles provide a classic backdrop to any table with the disctinctive and stylish label, a unique collaboration with artist Hannetjie de Clercq. The grapes originate from Agter-Paarl / Windmeul area (6 x 75 cl)

Chateau Belgrave 5eme Cru Classe Haut-Medoc
Description: On taking over the management of Château Belgrave in 1979, Dourthe set itself the ambitious task of returning this prestigious Haut-Medoc Grand Cru Classé to its former glory and making wines worthy of its rank. It was under the name of Château Coutenceau that the estate was classified as a 5 Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Contrary to what could be imagined, Château Belgrave does not owe its name to the superb gravel that makes up the soil and subsoil of the whole of the estate, but to the attachment of one of its British owners to the district of Belgravia in London where he lived. Thus it was that Château Coutenceau became Château Belgrave. The estate was renowned not only for its wines, but also for the abundant game that was to be found in its woods and the receptions given at the Château in the hunting season. This link between the estate and hunting explains the presence of a ferret the labels on the wines of the Château. Château Belgrave is one of the oldest crus in the Médoc, it is located in Saint-Laurent, on the border of Saint-Julien and the appellation is only separated by a stream. The vineyard with its 55 hectares in a single stretch was ranked as a 5Grand Cru Classé for the exceptional quality of its deep gravel. Michel Rolland is now the consultant Encologist at this Chateau. The harvest is traditionally picked by hand, using small trays, the grapes are put in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, while part of the wine is then matured in barrel on lees to preserve the aromas. Finally, ageing occurs in oak barrels between 15 to 18 months. This wine is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot and displays all the concentration and finesse one has come to expect from this excellent Chateau, ripe fruit, excellent concentration, balanced tannins and a long lingering, dry finish. The 2000 Vintage is a typical Haut-Medoc with the terrior reflected in the aromas and flavour of this lovely deep red coloured wine. Firm tannins and great tannic structure are complemented by the long finish. Available in half bottles. (12 x 37.5 cl)

Horse Mountain wines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. The fruit came from single block of four-year-old vines planted in rich red, well-drained Vilefontes soil types on south east slopes of Far Horizons Wine Estate in Voor Paardeberg, Paarl about 50km north of Cape Town. The 12 hectares are trellised on the progressive Australian VSP trellising system resulting in the intense fruit being grown on the vine. Made for Horse Mountain Wines by winemaker Charles Stassen, the wine underwent ageing in new French and American oak barrels for 9 months. Full of fruit, this is a big styled shiraz reflecting the intense fruit from the Voor Paardeberg ward within Paarl. A deep, complex, intriguing wine already approachable but with French and 20% American oak ageing will also show wonderfully in years to come. (6 x 75 cl)

Bava Monferrato Nebbiolo Vigneti di Cadodo Piedmont
Description: Tasting Outstandingly supple, enjoyable both fresh and aged, thanks to its ripe, soft tannins. A very expressive wine, suave, modern, and seductive. Grape Varieties Two thirds Nebbiolo, one third Barbera and Merlot Vineyard from one single vineyard, a cru at Tuffo near Cocconato d'Asti. Wine Production The grapes are fermented separately in steel vats. Ten months in oak. The bricco di Cadodo cru is an ideal location, the name designates a hill on whose crest the Bavas have patiently tended their vines ever since the 17th century. The wine, whose label bears the new Monferrato DOC designation, is an interesting example of how Nebbiolo, a variety of noble tradition, when planted in the Monferrato area, a short distance from the Langa, its land of origin and choice, can produce a new wine with an old heart. Thanks to the Barbera and the Merlot integrating the map of varieties planted in the Cadodo vineyards, the qualities of this wine are enhanced by the limestone and chalk in the soils of this terroir. It is endowed with natural elegance and drinkability, in tune with modern Italian trends. (6 x 75 cl)
