Ricardo de Freitas is the third generation to run this small company, since grandfather Mario Barbeito set himself up in business in 1946. Over the last ten years Ricardo has transformed the operation into what must be the most dynamic of all Madeira shippers and it is now 50% owned by the Japanese company Kinoshita Shoji. Ricardo's approach to Cerceal, or using its Anglicised name Sercial, is not to make it as raspingly dry as you might expect, which results in a deliciously rounded interpretation of this wine.
