Gallo Family Vineyards SONOMA COUNTY Pinot Noir California
Description: Winemaking has been a tradition in the Gallo family for almost 70 years and in developing the Ernest & Julio Gallo Sonoma wines, the winemakers have made a careful journey from vine to wine. The journey begins in Sonoma County where cool ocean breezes, lingering coastal fog and the warm sun nurture the ripening grapes. It ends with patient barrel-by-barrel tasting during fermentation and ageing to ensure that the potential tasted on the vine is captured in the bottle. More than other varietals, perhaps, Pinot Noir is a winemaker's wine, especially in the opportunities it provides for finessing delicate nuances of flavour or character. California's Sonoma County makes this challenge even more appealing by the excellent quality of its Pinot Noir grapes. Vineyards near the coast offer virtually ideal weather conditions with warm daytime temperatures during the growing season, followed by heavy fog intrusion at night and dramatically cooler conditions. Such a climate cycle slows down the ripening process, enabling Pinot Noir to develop crisp acids, good colour and great depth of flavour on the vine. Once in the winery the grapes were de-stemmed to limit the extraction of bitter tannin and delivered to the fermenting tanks uncrushed, since broken and macerated skins can be another source of excess tannin in the finished wine. Fermentation with 20-30% whole berries results in Pinot Noir rounder in body and fresher in flavour. The wine was 100% barrel aged for 6 months, during which time it gained greater complexity by completing a secondary cycle of malolactic fermentation. This care has produced a distinct fruit-forward character with intense flavours of dark red fruit-cherry and ripe raspberry. This Pinot Noir is framed by fresh earthy notes and a velvety finish showing a subtle layer of sweet vanilla oak. (6 x 75 cl)

Gallo Family Vineyards TURNING LEAF Pinot Noir California
Description: Our California Pinot Noir offers jammy cherry flavors enhanced by a hint of cedar on the finish. The conditions for the vintage were such that California experienced warm spring days followed by hot spells in late July and August. These conditions yielded grapes with crisp acidity and intense varietal flavors. In order to preserve these rich full flavors, the grapes were crushed at the winery and transferred to stainless steel for fermentation. 100% of the wine went through malolactic fermentation for greater flavor concentration and texture integration. The wine was aged in oak to add complexity while softening the wine in the process. (6 x 75 cl)

Sean Thackrey ANDROMEDA DEVIL'S GULCH RANCH Pinot Noir California
Description: Sean Thackrey’s has a slightly ramshackle winery in cool Bolinas, just north of San Francisco. Something of an independently minded intellectual, he makes wines to please himself and hence the unconventional range of wines. One of the oldest vineyards in Marin County is Devil's Gulch Vineyard, owned and farmed by Mark Pasternak. 'Marin is clearly cooler then Carneros or Santa Barbara, more like the Sonoma Coast around Freestone,' says Pasternak. He adds that 'because of these cool growing conditions Marin Pinots are more elegant, with more black fruit nuances.' Sean Thackrey is one of the producers that purchase Pinot Noir from Devil's Gulch vineyrad and he has produced a rich dense ruby coloured wine showing plum and blackberry aromas. In the mouth the plumy fruit flavours develop while french oak characters are evident in this well structured Pinot Noir that has a mouth coating finish. Limited Availability. (12 x 75 cl)

Francis Ford Coppola DIAMOND COLLECTION Silver Label Pinot Noir California
Description: Since its inception, the Francis Coppola Diamond Collection has been an expansive endeavor to create consistently high-quality wines that are pure expressions of each varietal. They sought out vineyard sites across California, which would ensure superior grapes year-after-year, and employ precise winemaking techniques to showcase the true character of the fruit. Pinot Noir grapes are harvested in the early morning hours, crushed, and then cold soaked for 48 hours to elicit color and aromas. During fermentation, the grapes are punched down four times a day to intensify flavors and extract tannin. Finally, the wine is aged in small French oak barrels. The wine has exceptionally dark colour, which is not typical of this varietal. It exhibits explosive aromatics of crushed raspberries, cranberries, and wild lavender. Impressive concentration, due in large part to the well-draining soils of our Monterey vineyards, the tannins are supple and the finish on this wine is extremely lengthy. 'Winemaking and filmmaking are two great art forms that are very important in the development of California. They both start with raw ingredients-in the case of wine, the land and the grapes, and in the case of film, the script and the actors' performances. The winemaker takes these raw materials and ferments and blends. He says yes to this batch, no to that one. The director does the same thing: a series of yeses and nos, from casting and costuming to edits and sound mixes. In both cases you have to start with top notch raw materials-whether it's the land or a script.' -Francis Ford Coppola (6 x 75 cl)

Jackson Wine Estates LA CREMA Pinot Noir Anderson Valley California
Description: Part of Jackson Wine Estates, La Crema winery was founded in 1979 and quickly established itself as a pioneer for intensely flavoured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This wine is from the Anderson Valley known for sloping hillside benches thta are blanketed by cool fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean during the heat of the summer growing season. These moderating conditions are ideal in cultivating Pinot Noir with naturally bright acidity and delicate red cherry and cranberry fruit aromas. The Anderson Valley is Mendocino’s premier growing region for Pinot Noir and this wine used the Dijon, heirloom Martini and Pommard clones to enhance the aroma and complexity. In the vineyard fruit-thinning is undertaken to remove late flowering clusters ensuring even ripening throughout the vineyards. Next the fruit is handpicked from the cool climate vineyards and delivered to the winery in small half ton bins to protect the integrity of the fruit. Once in the winery the Pinot Noir grapes are put on to a belt delivery system with sorting table to purge damaged fruit. Here only 70% of the whole berries are selected before fermentation takes place for greater fruit expression. Next a five day, 48 degree cold soak is completed before fermentation so that it enhances the silky tannin texture. Open top fermentation with cap punch downs four times daily extracts precise colour before the wine is aged 10 months in 100% French oak barrels refines the finish. Finally the Pinot Noir is bottled unfiltered and unfined to express the pure character of this great varietal. Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse had the following comments to make about this wine: 'Exotic aromas are delicate and floral with a hint of blueberry and herbal black tea. The flavours are focused on lush dark red cherry fruit which provides an enticing plush texture. Bright acidity accented by cranberry and red cherries create a seductive fruit entry that leads to a broad lingering finish.' (6 x 75 cl)
