Bergsig Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Breede River Valley RSA
Description: The Bergsig Estate has been in the Lategan family since 1843. De Wet Lategan is the sixth generation winemaker and has obtained a BSc degrees in Oenology at the University of Stellenbosch, before joining the family firm in 1990. His brothers Louis and Plum manage the vineyards. Their father Prop Lategan is still very active in the general management and promotion of the wines from his beautiful 400 Ha farm in the foothills of Bainskloof Mountain. Bergsig Estate lies at the narrow funnel-like entrance to the Breede River Valley. The regular afternoon South-easterly breezes have a moderating effect on the summer heat and ensures cool picking temperatures throughout the day. The Bergsig Estate was the first winery outside the coastal region to earn a superior award for red wine. More specifically the 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon. This encouraged Prop Lategan to plant more red varieties and today 20% of all plantings are Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot, Pinotage, Ruby Cabernet and Tinta Barocca. On the white side Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and now the very popular Gewurztraminer predominate. The modern cellar handles 4000 tons per harvest and boasts a separate wood maturation cellar. Estancia Merlot California
Description: Roughly translated from the Spanish word for 'estate' Estancia's name emphasizes the founder's conviction that the world's best wines capture the essence of their place of origin. In 1986, Estancia purchased the former Paul Mason vineyard ranches in the Monterey town of Soledad to established it as the home of Estancia Winery. This wine is produced from this vineyard and also from one in Passo Robles. The 1,200-acre Monterey Vineyard is situated on a frost-free benchland above Salinas Valley on California's Central Coast, in the Monterey town of Soledad. Cooled by morning and evening fog but far enough away from Monterey Bay to get a good daily dose of sun. The Paso Robles vineyard is characterised by hot days, cool nights and stressed vines that earmark this region and 700-acre vineyard for greatness. Its location in Paso Robles, a region that borders Monterey County to the south and is twenty miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, is integral in shaping the crisp acidity and mature tannins distinctive of the Cabernet, Merlot, Petite Verdot, Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Sirah grown here. Extreme temperature swings are common, with summer daytime temperatures topping 100 degrees Fahrenheit and nights influenced by cool fog. The vineyard's location on open benchlands along the Estrella River, where six soil types battle for minimal water, also adds to the deeply concentrated nature of the grapes. Today, Estancia's winemakers strive to combine the best of both worlds- a state of the art winemaking facility, and a traditional, hands-on approach to each grape they produce. In the end, this combination of technology and tradition allows Estancia to deliver the hand-crafted quality for which these wines are known. While the cutting-edge facilities enable Estancia to take advantage of the beneficial advances in winemaking technology. Finally, Estancia's commitment to old world processes results in the complexity and elegance found in artisanal and boutique wines. This blend of Merlot and a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah is aged 8 months in french Oak barrels of which 20% is new each year. A ruby red coloured wine it has ripe cherry and plum aromas as well as hints of mocha. Juicy and ripe with focused cherry and black cherry flavours, this is a round, soft wine with good mouthfeel, while the lingering finish has overtones of sweet oak and chocolate.

Jackson Wine Estates STONESTREET Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley California
Description: J. Stonestreet & Sons Vineyard & Winery began in the autumn of 1989 when Jess Jackson purchased a small vineyard and winery in the rolling hills bordering southern Alexander Valley. He named the winery in honor of his late father, Jess Stonestreet Jackson, and dedicated it to the task of handcrafting wines using traditional methods while showcasing modern techniques. Stonestreet quickly garnered international acclaim for powerful red and luscious white wines. Following this early success, Jess Jackson acquired the nearby Alexander Mountain Estate in 1995 and focused Stonestreet on mountain wines, particularly the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, in addition to small amounts of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from older vineyards on the mountain. Retaining the intense mountain flavours and colour from mountain fruit demands special care. A pre-fermentation cold-soak extracted fruit flavours while minimising tannin extraction. Separate lots were then fermented at warm temperatures with either native or cultured yeast for a total of about three weeks total skin contact time. Ageing was done in thin-stave French oak barrels, coopered to Stonestreet's specifications. This served to further integrate tannins and fruit while maintaining a balanced structure. A regimen of quarterly racking with light aeration and egg white fining naturally clarified the wine and further developed the nuanced complexity and supple tannins. This wine is well-balanced with a particularly lush mid-palate and dark ruby-purple colour. An elegant structure supports layers of spicy blackberry/cassis fruit along with hints of chocolate and coffee. (12 x 75 cl)
