Jim Barry THE COVER DRIVE Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia
Description: Situated in the cool uplands of the North Mount Lofty ranges about 50 km north of Adelaide, the vineyards of Jim Barry were established in Clare in 1959. This is a family run winery committed to producing quality wines through an innovative approach to viticulture and winemaking technology. As a result of this in Jim barry purchased great vine growing land on the southern boundary of Coonawarra. It was formally the old Penola cricket ground, which first saw a ball bowled in anger and the flashing cover drives of the local champions in 1950. Sadly, the ground closed in 1996 and soon afterwards Jim Barry purchased the 30 acre property and planted a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. However, the original pavilion and pitch have been retained, thus preserving an important piece of Coonawarra sporting history. Fruit from this vineyard, along with selected parcels of fruit from Jim Barry's other family owned Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in the Clare Valley have been blended to produce a wine that is rich, soft and approachable. Fruit from the Clare Valley and Coonawarra have been used to produce a dark red coloured wine with ripe blackberry, mint and sweet oak aromas. The palate is rich and full bodied with ripe, sweet blackberry and mint flavours, while it shows firm, but finely grained tannins complemented by a lingering finish. (6 x 75 cl)

Althaus DOMAINE A Cabernet Sauvignon Tasmania
Description: Peter and Ruth Althaus' 20ha property in the Coal River Valley in Southern Tasmania is truly remarkable in that the Cabernet, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc that it produces is not just high quality but is truly of world class. Here they are producing not only the 'Stoney Vineyard' but the 'Domaine A' range of wines. Peter Althaus was formerly a business man with IBM, working in Geneva. Having developed a palate for fine European wine and a curiosity for how he could set about making it, the Althaus' set about finding a vineyard site with potential to make outstanding wines. Virtually all of the European sites had already been identified so the search was extended to the Southern hemisphere. Peter long favoured the Central Otago region of New Zealand but eventually settled on the tiny 1 hectare property that today forms Domaine A. Since 1989, when they took over the Domaine, planting has increased to 20 hectares and includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc. Vines are densely planted and the sloping North/North East aspect coupled with a temperate maritime climate ensures that the grapes have a long, cool growing season (12 x 75 cl)

Grosset GAIA Clare Valley South Australia
Description: Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery set in the Clare Valley producing just six highly regarded premium wines each vintage. Jeff Grosset is one of the luminaries of the Australian wine industry, his fame the result not of puffery but of consistent and stellar quality over the past 25 years. Established in 1981 by Jeffrey Grosset in the historic township of Auburn in the southern tip of the Clare Valley 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. The winery is stylish but functional and reflects the attention to detail that extends to Jeffrey Grosset's estate-owned Clare Valley vineyards and to the winemaking. Sourced from Grosset's windswept Gaia vineyard in the Clare Valley, this wine is a blend of cabernet sauvignon , cabernet franc and merlot . Great care is taken from the vineyard to the winery and before the final blend was assembled the wine spends sixteen months in French oak barrique, 50 per cent of which were new. Opulent, concentrated and very impressive, this blend has a brooding intensity on the nose, being initially supple and smooth it is also powerful yet appears restrained. Showing ripe dark berry fruit flavours, some meaty, earthy notes and substantial fine tannins which build in the mouth making the finish firm and dry. (12 x 75 cl)

Cape Mentelle Cabernet Merlot Margaret River Western Australia
Description: Cabernet sauvignon and merlot are predominantly sourced from the estate's Trinders Vineyard and three long-term growers within the Margaret River region. The soils are comprised of laterite gravel loam over sandy clay sub-soil. The estate vines are planted at 2200 vines/ha and vertically trained on 1.5m trellises for cane pruning. In the other vineyards, the vines are close-spaced at 5000 vines/ha and trained on 1.8m vertical trellises. Small amounts of Cabernet and Merlot have also been introduced from our southern vineyards Foxcliffe and Chapman Brook. Sweet liquorice and blackcurrants, hints of vanilla and blueberry, are a classic definition of the Trinders style.
