Seghesio Family Vineyards OLD VINES Zinfandel Sonoma County California
Description: The Old Vine Zinfandel is deliciously dark-fruited and savoury-spiced. Deep ruby in colour, this wine combines spicy, lush black fruit from Alexander Valley with cooler Dry Creek Valley fruit that offers structure and Zinfandel’s classic briary and raspberry flavours. Full-bodied dark berry fruits are supported by silky oak tannins, layers of concentrated flavours and a long, spicy finish. In 1895, Edoardo Seghesio planted his first vineyard in America to Zinfandel. Today, four generations of grape growers later, half of the Seghesio family's 400 acres of vineyard are planted with Zinfandel. While the American government controls most wine labelling, they have no classification for "Old Vines." The Seghesio family’s benchmark is 60 years old and older, while the average age of the vines used for the ‘Old Vines’ Zinfandel is 90 years old. (12 x 75 cl)

Hartford Family Winery HARTFORD Zinfandel Russian River Valley California
Description: Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1993 as a result of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast. The fruit for the Russian River Valley Zinfandel is a blend of old-vine, dry farmed and low yielding Zinfandel vineyards predominately from the Russian River Valley. These old vineyards offer an impressive articulation of this idiosyncratic varietal. Zinfandel grown in the Russian River Valley is distinctive due to this region’s cool maritime influence. Bright, natural acidity and vibrant fruit aromas and flavours are a result of typically cool fog-laden nights and warm days. These dry-farmed vineyards planted on low-fertility soils consistantly produce wines of exceptional density, and legendary extract. This old-vine Zinfandel provides alluring aromas of blackberry, sweet pipe tobacco, black pepper and anise complemented by flavours reminiscent of fresh baked blackberry pie with allspice, anise and caramel notes on the finish. Stunningly rich and concentrated, this Russian River Valley Zinfandel has incredible definition of fruit and sweet luscious tannins. To preserve the exotic spice and sweet berry flavours, this wine was neither fined nor filtered. (12 x 75 cl)

Cline Cellars ANCIENT VINES Mourvedre Contra Costa County California
Description: At the turn of the 20th century, Oakley was home to a number of Portuguese and Italian immigrants who found many similarities to the Mediterranean climate they had left behind. They planted thousands of acres of orchards and vineyards. Today, a century later, due to the devastation of phylloxera and the encroachment of commercial and residential development, only 600 acres of vineyards remain in this evolving community. Cline Cellars owns and controls 300 of those acres including some of the oldest surviving vines in California. Cline Cellars began when Fred Cline's maternal grandfather, Valeriano Jacuzzi lived in Oakley and inspired him to go on to to U.C. Davis to study agriculture management. After attaining his degree in 1982, Fred returned to Oakley and founded Cline Cellars. There he started producing wines and restoring his grandfather’s ancient vines: today the Zinfandel, Carignane and Mourvedre produced from these vines are some of the most unique and historic wines made in California. In 1991, the winery relocated from Oakley to the Carneros region of Sonoma County. Here Fred pioneered the planting of Rhone varietals including Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. From vines over 100 years old which give fruit of remarkable concentration, this is Contra Costa Mourvedre par excellence. The Ancient Vines Mourvedre, grown in the warm, sandy soils of Oakley California, produces a wine that has a distinct chocolate character. The tannins are soft and the wine has good weight in the mouth while the flavours and aromas of cherry and mint help make this delicious wine an unusual delight. (12 x 75 cl)

Francis Ford Coppola DIRECTORS CUT Zinfandel Dry Creek California
Description: When Francis Coppola chose Sonoma County as the home for his new winery, he did so because of the area's beauty and winemaking potential. By selecting Sonoma, Francis provided the winemaker Corey Beck, a Sonoma native, with the opportunity to make wines with grapes grown in his proverbial own backyard. Director's Cut wines are the result-appellation-designated wines from Sonoma'sdiverse and distinctive appellations. Growing Zinfandel in the Dry Creek Valley straddles two worlds. One consists of the traditional farmer who dry-farms head-trained, spur-pruned vines. Balance is attained by virtue of the vines' old age as well as early canopy management and fruit thinning when needed. The other employs more modern methods, including bilateral cordon, spur-pruned on-wire trellising, drip irrigation, and carefully manicured canopies. Francis Forrd Coppola source our Zinfandel grapes from vineyards on the benchlands and hillsides which are farmed both ways. The combination of the area's climate, our vineyard sites, and the two types of farming methods used produces excellent fruit with intensely concentrated flavour. This Zinfandel was blended with a small amount of Petite Sirah for 12 months in French oak. Half the fruit was crushed whole berry and the must is fermented in open-top fermenters for eight days, with punch downs three times a day, to ensure maximum flavor and color extraction. After fermentation, the wine was aged in French oak adding a wonderful toasted spice and French vanilla essence to its heady aroma of rum raisin with hints of black currant and red cherry. Sweet raspberry jam with currant and red spice flavors are wrapped up in a soft and luxurious texture with moderate tannins. 'Winemaking and filmmaking are two great art forms that are very important in the development of California. They both start with raw ingredients-in the case of wine, the land and the grapes, and in the case of film, the script and the actors' performances. The winemaker takes these raw materials and ferments and blends. He says yes to this batch, no to that one. | | | |
