A range of soils-from alluvial to lean volcanic-contributes to the diverse flavours in this wine. Mondavi chose 35% of the grapes from the Oakville AVA, including 33% from Robert Mondavi To Kalon Vineyard, and 22% from the Stags Leap District AVA, including 7% from Robert Mondavi Wappo Hill Vineyard. The balance of the grapes came from the Rutherford AVA and other Napa Valley vineyards. Ripe dark berry, spice, violet and chocolate weave through the aromas and smooth, velvety flavours of this Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. These rich, expressive flavours come from the soils and climates of vineyards located primarily in the geographic center of Napa Valley. Firm tannins support the abundant fruit character and give the wine excellent length on the palate. Fermentation with both cultured and native yeast strains gives layers of nuance to the wine, and extended skin contact intensifies varietal complexity and softens tannins. Finally, Mondavi aged the wine in French oak chateau barrels for over 18 months to enhance the lush texture and add spicy oak accents to this wine. (12 x 75 cl)

Description: Established in 1989 Legacy is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from selected blocks in Alexander Mountain Estate vineyards. Legacy selected five lots of wine from the estate vineyards in the eastern mountains and hills enclosing the southern end of the Alexander Valley. Elevation holds the key to this wine’s combination of boldness and elegance with more than 80% of the grapes used to make this wine grown at elevations of at least 2,000 feet. Most of the Cabernet Sauvignon was chosen from selected blocks planted at 2,400 feet on Alexander Mountain Estate. Higher altitude creates its own climate, different from the vineyards planted on the valley floor. Even on the warmest summer days, the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean twenty miles away can be felt. Soils, too, are significantly different, on the mountain, the soil is thin, rocky and gravelly, this helps produce fruit that is complex, rich as well as concentrated. To complement the powerful fruit only small, thin-staved French oak barrels are used to age this wine for 16 months. The resulting wine is supple, with flavours of cedar, black currant and dark chocolate. Look also for hints of smoky toastiness and concentrated black cherries. (12 x 75 cl)

Description: Part of Jackson Wine Estates, La Crema winery was founded in 1979 and quickly established itself as a pioneer for intensely flavoured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This wine is from the Anderson Valley known for sloping hillside benches thta are blanketed by cool fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean during the heat of the summer growing season. These moderating conditions are ideal in cultivating Pinot Noir with naturally bright acidity and delicate red cherry and cranberry fruit aromas. The Anderson Valley is Mendocino’s premier growing region for Pinot Noir and this wine used the Dijon, heirloom Martini and Pommard clones to enhance the aroma and complexity. In the vineyard fruit-thinning is undertaken to remove late flowering clusters ensuring even ripening throughout the vineyards. Next the fruit is handpicked from the cool climate vineyards and delivered to the winery in small half ton bins to protect the integrity of the fruit. Once in the winery the Pinot Noir grapes are put on to a belt delivery system with sorting table to purge damaged fruit. Here only 70% of the whole berries are selected before fermentation takes place for greater fruit expression. Next a five day, 48 degree cold soak is completed before fermentation so that it enhances the silky tannin texture. Open top fermentation with cap punch downs four times daily extracts precise colour before the wine is aged 10 months in 100% French oak barrels refines the finish. Finally the Pinot Noir is bottled unfiltered and unfined to express the pure character of this great varietal. Winemaker Melissa Stackhouse had the following comments to make about this wine: 'Exotic aromas are delicate and floral with a hint of blueberry and herbal black tea. The flavours are focused on lush dark red cherry fruit which provides an enticing plush texture. Bright acidity accented by cranberry and red cherries create a seductive fruit entry that leads to a broad lingering finish.' (6 x 75 cl)

Description: Our Barrelli Creek Cabernet Sauvignon is a complex and intense wine with aromas and flavors of black currant, black cherry, and cassis. With balanced tannins and sweet vanilla and spice flavors from oak barrel aging, this wine has a smooth finish. With three generations and over six decades of experience in northern Sonoma, our family believes that the secret to producing world class wines is to start with world class grapes. We meticulously shoot positioned and cluster thinned grapes for this wine from only the finest blocks at our Barrelli Creek Vineyard. Grapes for this wine were de-stemmed, but not crushed, to retain 20%-30% whole berries for fermentation. This process allows us to better retain the grape's varietal essence and minimize bitter tannin extraction in the wine. The wine was aged in European, French, and American oak barrels for an average of 25 months. This wine then completed malolactic fermentation and, to enhance bouquet, flavor, and body was not fined and only minimally filtered prior to bottling. 96% Barrelli Creek Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Barrelli Creek Petite Syrah In the hillside benchlands of the Alexander Valley, winegrowing at our family's Barrelli Creek Vineyard began over a century ago when Italian immigrants first planted vines. Grapes grown on this site are enhanced by soils comprised of gravel, sand, silt, and clay; described as Clough, Arbuckle, and Haire series. Description: Founded in 1972, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is an independent, estate-based winery located outside of St. Helena. Perched on a knoll in bucolic Spring Valley, the graceful redwood winery overlooks vineyard-studded hills, the town of St. Helena and the Mayacamas Mountains to the west. Long known for his innovative spirit and passion for quality, Joe Phelps pioneered a number of 'firsts' in the early years of the winery. The 1974 Insignia — released in the spring of 1978 — was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California under a proprietary label. The release of the 1974 Syrah in 1977 sparked industry-wide interest in a remarkable French varietal whose plantings in California had disappeared and been virtually forgotten for over half a century. And in 1990, after years of research, a whole new family of Rhone-style wines was introduced which today includes Syrah, Viognier and a Chateauneuf-du-Pape style blend called Le Mistral. This Red is a blend of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the estate-owned Backus Vineyard in Oakville. Once the grapes were harvested at an average 24.5o Brix, they were fermented in stainless steel tanks, and aged 23 months in new French oak barrels before being bottled. The first Backus Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1977 from a 6.75 acre parcel leased from Marian Backus, and even then Phelps believed this steeply-terraced hillside vineyard with its brick-red soil was capable of producing outstanding wines. Subsequent vintages, especially during the 90’s, confirmed their belief, and when the entire 45-acre parcel was offered for sale in 1996, Joseph Phelps enthusiastically bought it. Extremely balanced, concentrated and flavourful fruit were used in this Cabernet Sauvignon. Showing trademark flavours of chocolate, berry and mineral, its silky texture and, perhaps most distinctive, powerful, sweet tannins deliverr through to the finsh. (6 x 75 cl)

Description: Papapietro Perry’s foundation is a long friendship among work colleagues with common interests and a driving passion to make fine wine. Ben Papapietro and Bruce Perry met during their careers with the San Francisco Newspaper Agency, publisher of the San Francisco Chronicle and Examiner. As their friendship developed, they discovered they both came from families where Grandpa’s homemade wine was as common on the dinner table as vegetables from Mom’s garden. Their interest in wine spilled into another friendship at work, this time with Burt Williams, a pressman and co-founder of Williams Selyem Winery. In the ‘70s, Ben helped Bert make garragista wine in Bert's garage in Sonoma County. After Williams Selyem was started, Ben and Bruce helped out each year at harvest—and were seriously bitten by the wine bug. In 1980, Ben began producing his own garragista wines and Bruce joined him a few years later. Inspired by his love of French Burgundies, Ben began making Pinot Noir, diligently seeking high-quality grapes to produce his favorite varietal. By 1990, Ben was purchasing Pinot Noir grapes from some of the most highly-regarded Pinot producers in the Russian River Valley. After several years of hearing friends and family praise their homemade wines, in 1998 Ben and Bruce took the plunge and produced their first commercially available Pinot Noir. Although the first release was only 75 cases, it marked the launch of Papapietro Perry Winery. The Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is a blend from three carefully-selected vineyards in the appellation including Leras Family Vineyards, Elsbree Vineyards and Windsor Oaks. Although close in proximity each holds its own distinction Papapietro Perry Winery feel they are among the best the Russian River Valley has to offer. Medium-deep ruby colour with aromas of fruit, spice, smoke and earth. Flavours of red cherry, berry, spice, and minerals satisfy the palate while the sweet oak, solid structure, and firm tannins lead to a long and balanced finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Grapes were harvested at an average 25.4º Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 20 months in a combination of new French and American oak barrels and two- to four-year-old French and American oak , before being blended and bottled prior to release. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is full of ripe fruit notes of blackberry and Bing cherry with a dash of curry and allspice. The oak is well integrated and helps mold the smooth, silky finish and sweet tannins, which linger on the palate. (12 x 75 cl)
