Houghton Sparkling Wine Pemberton Western Australia
Description: Houghton Wines, based in the heart of the Swan Valley, contains a wealth of romantic history. Named after Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton in 1836, the first commercial vintage was produced in 1859 totalling 25 gallons, the foundation for one of Australia's oldest continuous winemakers. The picturesque Houghton winery property has 50 hectares planted with premium grape varieties including Verdelho, Chardonnay, Semillon and Chenin Blanc. Early documentation and current research suggests the first vines were planted between 1830 and 1836. In addition Houghton operates four of Western Australia's largest vineyards at Moondah Brook, Pemberton, Mt Barker and Frankland River, along with sourcing fruit from Margaret River, Harvey and emerging premium areas. These diverse wine regions provide the necessary fruit requirements vital for the production of premium table wines, which are distinctly Western Australian. This sparkling wine is a medium straw colour, crystal clear with a fine and persistent bead. Aged Aromas of toast and butter mushrooms are complemented with fresh yeast autolysis characters. A well structured balance of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir provides an even and balanced palate of great length. The extended bottle maturation on yeast lees gives great complexity and depth to the delicate palate. A wine of finesse finishing with crisp, natural acid.

Description: Winemaker Notes Bright deep garnet in colour; intense aromas of lifted raspberry, cherry liqueur fruits mixed with toasty charry oak over a brooding layer of smoked meats. Juicy dark cherries are complemented with supple mouth filling tannins. A savoury backbone and a charry oak edge underlie a tightly structured wine which finishes long and clean. Drink now or in 3-5 years Vineyards The year 2001 saw two new clones of pinot noir come on stream adding to the already mature 'Droopy' clone at Fonty's Pool Vineyard. All the clones are grown on ironstone gravelly loams associated with the native marri and jarrah eucalypts . The original pinot noir vines were planted in 1989, whilst the two new clones were planted in 1997 and 1999 with all vines spaced at 3.0 x 1.5 metres and either spur or cane pruned on a bilateral cordon. Shoots are trained vertically between wires on a 1.8 m trellis. Extensive hand positioning of shoots, selective leaf removal on the eastern aspect of rows and bunch thinning is practiced. The deep soils require irrigation to be used only sparingly to encourage balanced vine growth and physiological development. (12 x 75 cl)

Forest Hill Winery INDIS Unoaked Chardonnay Western Australia
Description: One of Western Australia’s newest labels represents two of the state’s oldest families. Indeed, it could be said that the wines of Forrest Hill, from its 24.5ha Karriedale vineyard at the southern end of Margaret River, are steeped in history. The Indis wines are made at the Forest Hill winery by Larry Cherubino, one of Australia's most successful and highly regarded young winemakers. The Forest Hill winery was completed in 2003 and has state of the art technology to ensure a best practice approach from crushing right through to bottling. Indis offers a select range of handcrafted wines made from fruit grown in Western Australia's leading cool climate viticultural regions. Fruit is sourced exclusively from the Pemberton region of Western Australia. The proximity to the ocean produces a light breeze, which reduces the risks of frost and rot and cools the area, lengthening the ripening season and increasing the temperature ranges. The fruit is transported as quickly as possible to the brand new Forest Hill Winery in order to maintain freshness and reduce the risk of spoilage. It is gently crushed and chilled, before fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is not aged in oak in order to protect its varietal characteristics, but bottled soon after a light filtration. Bright, white gold in colour with flashes of lime green, the nose is an aromatic fruit melange of pineapple, melon, grapefruit and citrus aromas. The palate is medium bodied and unoaked, with a crystal clear presentation of tropical fruits balanced with delightful citrus acidity and a clean, crisp finish. A Stelvin closure has been used to seal this wine to guarantee that its style and quality is exactly the same as when it left Western Australia and to reduce the risk of any cork taint. (6 x 75 cl)
