Bodegas Muga RESERVA Rioja Alta duplicate
Description: Bodegas Muga was founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and his wife, Aurora Cano, both of whom came from families with a long tradition of activity within the wine-making industry. Over the years, Muga wines have gained international recognition and acclaim; from working with just a few thousand kilos of grapes per year, the bodega has now expanded its processing capacity to over one and half million kilos. Today, new generations of the Muga family continue to join the family business, making Bodegas Muga a true symbol of family tradition. The Bodegas Muga vineyards are situated on the east and south-facing slopes of the Obarenes Mountains, which are sculptured into terraces to form a series of small plots. The soil in this region is mainly clayey and calcareous, although some regions tend to be more ferrous and alluvial. The land is divided into small plots with varying physical and chemical properties and their own individual and clearly defined personalities. A blend of Tempranillo 70%, Garnacha 20% and Mazuelo y Graciano 10% grapes this wine spends 6 months in traditional Riojan oak vats, 24 months in small oak barrels and a minimum of 12 months in bottle. Cherry red in colour with light brick hues from ageing, the aromas of noble wood are perfectly blended with those of ripe fruit. The balance in the mouth is perfectly compensated in flavour of this rounded wine. Full of nuances this Tempranillo dominated wine is very tasty with a long, lingering finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Made from Viura and Malvasía , the grapes are grown on clay-calcareous and alluvial soil. The double grape checking procedure, both on selection belt and on tasting the musts, means that 50% of the harvest is excluded for use in this wine. Slow fermentation in new French oak and 3 months on fine lees are the secrets of this careful production process which produces such great wines. Pale straw coloured wine it has a nose of complex fruit aromas showing peach, apple and pineapple. The Fine lees are showing great character and the oak is evident while the mouth is lively, sharp and unctuous as well as leaving a feeling of length on the palate and finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Bodegas Muga ARO Rioja DO
Description: At the end of the 80's the Muga family started to think about making special elaborations having in mind the international markets. This objective involved the making of full-bodied wines, more powerful but without losing the elegance and complexity which have always been present in the wines from Muga. The result is the Aro wine, a tribute to the Rioja Wine capital. Concentrating on the fruit Aro grapes are highly selective and made from vineyards older than 60 years old with a plant by plant selection. After extensive work and care in the winery the wine is aged, lightly clarified and it is bottled without filtering. This has produced an elegant red coloured wine with violet hues which hint at a well preserved youthfulness. In the aroma there is a subtle mingling of fruit nuances of ripe red berries with hints of spices. This aroma is intense, clean and subtle. On the palate it has lots of flavour, with an elegant attack, evolving into a meaty mouth-feel. Its powerful, though modulated tannins carry the wine onwards into a long, promising finish. A complex, supple, enjoyable wine with excellent potency. (3 x 75 cl)

Torre Fornello DONNA LUIGIA Malvasia Colli Piacentini DOC
Description: Donna Luigia Scotti Douglas, descendant of a noble Scottish family and widow of Count Zanardi Landi, grand duke of Tuscany, bequeaths the whole estate to her daughter in 1862. The will lists the whole of the Estate with great accuracy. In her will, Donna Luigia demands that the estate should never be split up, and that is why it came down complete to the present owner, including the vineyards, while it is fascinating to notice how each parcel of land had kept its own name. In 1972 the whole of the estate was sold to the Sgorbati family, winemakers of tradition from the surrounding area. Since 1991 Enrico Sgorbati, son of Giuseppe and Fernanda, has overseen winegrowing and in 1998 he started making high-quality wines in the old manor-house, now entirely restored. The vineyards of the Torre Fornello estate cover an area of 55 hectares on the hills around Piacenza, in the commune of Ziano. Here soil and climate are particularly suitable to winegrowing, an activity that has been going on since Roman times. The vineyards are under controlled cover crop, which forces the vines to a natural competition, resulting in lower yields per hectare, but of higher quality and more resistant to moulds. While every single winemaking and stocking stage follows the guidelines regulating organic products and the result is eco-friendly, high-quality wines. Clear yellow straw coloured wine with decisive golden reflections, intense perfume and immediate hints of fuit, at first evasively and then decisively. The intense and fruty flavour are both harmonious and pleasing. (12 x 75 cl)

Torre Fornello SINSAL GUTTURNIO Superiore Colli Piacentini DOC
The grapes for this wine come from estate vineyards in the commune of Ziano enjoying a good site and certain microclimatic advantages. Gutturnio Superiore Sinsal is a blend of two grape varieties, Barbera and Bonarda, whose limited and selected yields give prestige to the wine. Sinsal is a word from the local dialect, meaning the middleman who in the old days acted not only as intermediary in the selling and buying of agricultural commodities, but also as a go-between, arranging marriages between local families. Hence the name given to a wine which is a perfect, long-lasting marriage between two noble grape varieties destined to improve with time. In October only the best bunches of grapes are selected and hand-picked, and each grape variety is then processed individually. The grapes are de-stemmed, soft pressed and then pumped into small stainless steel tanks, where they ferment with their skins at a controlled temperature ranging between 28° and 30°C. Maceration takes from 15 to 20 days to allow for a thorough separation of juice from skins. The wines thus obtained are mixed in the right proportions and left to age for about seven months, part in stainless steel tanks and part in oak barrels, which give a noticeable flavour and a balanced body to the wine. The wine is then aged in bottle for four months before it is released. This wine is a dark garnet colour verging on violet, with a vinous aroma showing hints of plum and cherry complementing the smooth wide-spectrum aroma. This wine is softly tannic with a stewed fruit aftertaste and enjoyable finish.
