The cool climate of the Casablanca Valley, Chile's premier white wine region, creates an excellent wine which exudes the classic gooseberry and cut-grass aromas associated with this variety. Good clarity with a light straw colour, this wine is zesty with sensational medium body flavours similar to the aroma-citrus, herbs, and fresh fruit that linger gently on the palate. In 1990, after discovering promising potential vineyard property in the Casablanca Valley, Agustin Huneeus realized his dream of returning to Chile to found Veramonte. Veramonte's Casablanca Valley is surrounded by coastal mountain ranges creating a diversity of unique microclimates and terroirs. Its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean provides ideal growing and ripening conditions for Chardonnay. The valley floor provides a cool Carneros-like climate, while the terraced hillside blocks have warmer temperatures, similar to the northern Napa Valley. This 'super-premium' wine uses Carmenere as the base together with some Cabernet Sauvignon. Using premium quality fruit from the Alto de Casablanca estate, the young wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Definitely a 'terroir' wine, Primus is a limited production wine that showcases the rare Carmenère variety, a grape once prevalent in Bordeaux in the 1800's when Chile first began importing vines from France.
