Les Vins De Vienne CHIRATS DE St CHRISTOPHE Hermitage
Description: Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard and François Villard, highly experienced Rhone Vignerons to a man, have resurrected the ancient area of Seyssuel, planting their first vines in February 1996 and breathing life back into an area that was producing quality wines for the Romans. The plots were chosen on schist soil with a Southern exposure, which were re-claimed and planted with the traditional varietals, Syrah and Viogner, around the Archbishop’s castle at Vienne. These hillside plots had fallen into neglect during the mid 20th century, when the cost of maintaining low yielding vines by hand was prohibitive. This wine is sourced from 93 hectares of steeply sloping hillsides that must be maintained by hand, the terraces have a Southeasterly aspect. The soil is granitic and rich in mica and the climate is of a moderate continental nature. Minimal handling is employed in the winery by limiting the amount of pumping and transfers as much as possible. Malolactic fermentation is performed in casks prior to 18 months ageing in new French oak casks. Racking is also kept to a minimum and clarification is with egg whites, there is no filtration. This Syrah is showing a concentrated, dark berry fruit dominated nose with more than a hint of minerals and stones. On the palate it is concentrated, tightly knit and serious with a masculine structure and bullish length. Its black fruits are well integrated with its rounded tannins and there's a purity about the middle palate which is classically Northern Rhone. Persistent, dry finish.
