Isole E OlenaVINSANTO Tuscany
Description: Paolo De Marchi has produced a blend of 65% Malvasia del Chianti and 35% Trebbiano. The grapes were dried for 3-5 months before pressing after which the must was racked into 'caratelli' where it fermented and aged for five years before bottling. The wine remained on the 'madre' or starter culture for the entire ageing/fermenting period, during which time it was neither racked nor filtered. At the end of the ageing period, the resulting wine comprises only 12-15% of the initial yield. Deep amber in colour. Intense, rich, nutty fruit on the nose, giving way to a similar intensity and concentration on the palate. With great balance and length, the Isole e OlenaVinSanto has a clean dry finish. The grapes are grown on the Isole e Olena estate which covers 45 hectares, of which 42 are planted with vines and 35 are in production. The vineyards are approximately 400 metres above sea level and face south-west. The oldest vines on the estate were planted in 1958 and the youngest in 1999. The name "Isole e Olena" was conceived in the 1950's when two adjoining estates, "Isole" and "Olena" were purchased by the De Marchi family and were combined to form one. The history of both estates dates back many hundreds of years, and the earliest documentation of the village of Olena as far back as the 12th Century. At the beginning of the 1950's, the De Marchi family began gradually phasing out the sharecropping system. New specialised vineyards were planted and the cellars were expanded. Today the Isole e Olena estate is run by Paolo De Marchi, his wife Marta and his children. Paolo comes from a family with three generations of winemaking experience in the northern part of Piemonte. Isole e Olena Chardonnay Val d'Elsa Toscana
Description: Paolo De Marchi’s Isole e Olena Chardonnay is now considered one of Italy’s finest, the style being richer and more Burgundian than others in the country. With each vintage he seems to get a wonderful balance of fruit and oak with great complexity and length. It is unfortunate that these wines sell out so quickly, as they age superbly. The secret of the quality Paolo transmits in the bottle lies in the vineyards. He is a superb viticoltore and has always been ahead of the field in Chianti. Paolo’s endless pursuit of perfection results in wines where the delicate balance is finely tuned with each vintage. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £136.71
Barone Ricasoli VINSANTOChiantiClassico Description: Castello di Brolio is one of the oldest wine producers in the world and is situated in the heart of the ChiantiClassico region of Italy. Located in Gaiole in Chianti, it has one of the longest histories of any wine estate in the world, having produced wine since 1141. In 1993, Barone Francesco Ricasoli took back control of the estate, spending millions of dollars replanting vineyards and upgrading the cellars. Today, Brolio is again one of Tuscany's leading wine estates. Using the traditional method of vinification the Malvasia , Canaiolo and Sangiovese grapes selected are hung clusters and left to wither for approximately four months in a ventilated atmosphere. The must obtained is fermented slowly for approximately 2 years, and then aged a further 3 years in the barrel. This traditional method of making VinSanto has produced a dessert wine with a beautiful deep golden colour with amber hues. The intense and fragrant bouquet leads to a full and lingering taste of almonds and raisins with a great finish. Available in half bottles. (6 x 37.5 cl) Price: £171.70
