Cooler vineyard temperatures preserve zinfandel's juicy acidity and allowed for the grape tannins to mature on the vine while infusing scents of cracked black pepper and heightening zin's briary, spicy essence. Fine, ripe tannins add a velvety richness seldom found in Zinfandel, while the elegant richness, broad mouth feel and a lingering minerality elicit typicity that indicate superior grape growing. Savory purity of fruit with both aromas and flavours of blueberry and cherry abound. Fruit for this wine came from four estate vineyards: San Lorenzo, Home Ranch, Lone Oak and River Road in Alexander Valley and Cortina in Dry Creek Valley. Once in the winery the results of vinification and 12 months in oak; of which 75% was American and 25% French; is a good colour and soft, ripe tannins. The Seghesio Story begins in 1886 when Edoardo Seghesio departed his family's vineyards in Piedmonte, Italy for a new life in America. Like so many immigrants, he was drawn to Northern Sonoma County and the Italian Swiss Colony, to follow his passion for winemaking. The "colony," as it was known, hired immigrants for three year stints, providing room and board and then, a lump sum at the end of those three years enabling employees to buy land or set up a business in their new home. Soon, Edoardo rose through the ranks to winemaker. Yet, he yearned for home. The Colony's manager repeatedly encouraged him to stay and finally, it was his niece and the opportunity to purchase land that convinced Edoardo to remain. That young girl, Angela Vasconi and Edoardo were married in 1893. In 1895, they purchased a modest home in northern Alexander Valley, less for the home than the surrounding 56 acres Edoardo recognized as ideal vineyard land. They planted the "Home Ranch" that year to what has become the family's lifeline (12 x 75 cl)

Jordan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County California
Description: The bouquet offers subtle notes of cassis, black cherry, currants and chocolate. It is a richly textured wine with lush, ripe flavors of blackberry, Bing cherry, cassis and raspberry. Slight earthy notes of tobacco and cedar and a subtle framework of oak complete this delicious wine. From our first vintage in 1976, Tom Jordan has sought to create a soft, approachable Cabernet Sauvignon in which the winemaking is simply a logical completion of nature's work. With this in mind, Jordan Vineyard & Winery has successfully maintained a tradition of producing elegant, refined Bordeaux-style Cabernet Sauvignon in Northern California's Alexander Valley. The 2001 vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon was fermented slowly and received a gentle extended maceration in order to extract, soften and stabilize the lush, elegant tannins and concentrated flavors from the fruit before pressing. Full malolactic fermentation followed in large oak casks to soften the natural acidity and enrich the texture of the wine. The young wine was then aged for twelve months in both French and American small oak barrels and six months in neutral large oak barrels before blending to achieve an optimal balance of flavors and complexity. After bottling, the finished wine received nineteen months of additional aging in our temperature controlled cellars before release. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £470.09

Description: Belvedere Winery specialises in artisinal wines from Northern Sonoma vineyards. For 15 years the owners of Belvedere, the Hambrecht family, have been searching out the best sites to produce wines with a real sense of place. Three of California's most remarkable grape-growing sites surround Healdsburg, the location of the Belvedere winery. Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley all lie within 15 minutes of each other yet offer dramatically different micro-climates and are farmed accordingly, matching varieties to locations. This care and attention to detail has produced a rich full bodied wine with intense flavours of blackberry jam, raspberries, spice and chocolate.
