McGregor Shiraz Robertson RSA
Description: McGregor village lies across the Breede River from Robertson, sheltered by the Langeberg Mountains to the north and the Riviersonderend to the south. It was settled by the Rev. Andrew McGregor in 1861 and this Scottish heritage is apparent in both the architecture of the village and the labelling of the wine. In the vineyards and cellars, however, thoroughly modern techniques are employed to produce wines with excellent fruit and character. Careful canopy management and an ideal climate produce high quality fruit on 680 hectares of vineyard. Vinification is carried out at cool temperatures and with clean juice to produce lively, vibrant wines. A young, juicy style of Shiraz with bold spicy black fruit character, soft creamy palate and good length. (12 x 75 cl)

Horse Mountain Shiraz Voor-Paardeberg Paarl RSA
Description: Horse Mountain Wines embody a new spirit of adventure in winemaking in the Cape with a fresh, entrepreneurial approach, unfettered by conventional tradition but rooted in the tried and tested philosophy that fine wine is made in the vineyard. These wines come from a former dairy farm on the slopes of the Paardeberg mountain between Paarl and Wellington. The 217ha property was acquired in 1997 after its potential as a suitable terroir for quality wine production had been identified. Since then, energetic owner Craig Lardner, a former property developer with a new-found passion for winemaking, and innovative consultant viticulturist Paul Wallace, have systematically selected nearly 50ha of the 150ha of viticulturally viable ground for painstaking preparation and careful cultivation to five grape varieties. The grapes grown include Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that flourish on the high-lying, high-potential Vilefontes soils. While the Merlot and Pinotage have settled in the lower-lying, rich red Swartland/Glenrosa soils and Cabernet Franc does well in the similarly low-altitude Estcourt soils. Such significant variations in soil comnbined with an exceptional climate compared with conditions in the surrounding Paarl wine growing district, earned this new viticultural pocket its own 'ward' status in 2003. Horse Mountain wines thus proudly bear the designation Wine of Origin Voor-Paardeberg on their labels. The fruit came from single block of four-year-old vines planted in rich red, well-drained Vilefontes soil types on south east slopes of Far Horizons Wine Estate in Voor Paardeberg, Paarl about 50km north of Cape Town. The 12 hectares are trellised on the progressive Australian VSP trellising system resulting in the intense fruit being grown on the vine. Made for Horse Mountain Wines by winemaker Charles Stassen, the wine underwent ageing in new French and American oak barrels for 9 months. Full of fruit, this is a big styled shiraz reflecting the intense fruit from the Voor Paardeberg ward within Paarl. A deep, complex, intriguing wine already approachable but with French and 20% American oak ageing will also show wonderfully in years to come. (6 x 75 cl)

Best's GREAT WESTERN Bin No 0 Shiraz Great Western Victoria
Description: 2001 at 'Concongella' Great Western was one of the hottest years on record, following on from a relatively dry winter. A very early season until mid to late March, when late rains, while doing very little damage, changed the ripening pattern. Ripening was slowed further by winter closing in with extremes of cold. To sum up, a difficult season. Two years on and Viv Thomson and Hamish Seabrook are very satisfied with this pedigree wine, as it has certainly far, far surpassed earlier expectations. Grapes of four different planting's have been used in the 2001 Bin N0 0 Shiraz, 1966,1970, 1992 and 1994. It is the first time that the 1992 and 1994 vines have reached the standard required for Bin No 0. A lot has been talked about the age of vines and it is gratifying to see a young vineyard come to fruition. Compared to previous vintages this wine shows a little more oak, which should integrate nicely with time. The 'Bin No O' has all the hallmarks of fine Shiraz produced from grapes grown exclusively on Best's Concongella vineyard. Bin No O has complexity, power and longevity, while maturation in oak puncheons for over two years prior to bottling makes this Shiraz very approachable even as a young wine. A fruit driven, powerful yet elegant Shiraz, abundant in dark forest fruits. Great with very hearty, robust spicy dishes. However for a change, try with lamb spiced with black and green olives and mustard. The label design is almost an exact replica of Henry Best's 1800's label. (12 x 75 cl)

Nelson's Creek Wine Estate NELSON'S ESTATE Shiraz Paarl RSA
Description: Alan Nelson's committment to quality is reflected in the hand-crafted wines carrying the Nelson's Estate Label. These wines come from carefully chosen highest quality grapes on the Estate and have been nurtured along at every stage in their creation. Deep red with a full colour to the rim, it is soft, rich and full-bodied wine combines blackberries, dark/bitter chocolate and allspice to result in a long, lingering finish. The grapes were picked fully ripe and pump overs were vigorous and frequent while being done by hand and not by irrigation. Next, the wine was fermented completely dry before pressing which, due to the super ripe grapes, allowed a harded pressing to draw out more of the rich extracts from the grapes. After malolactic the wine received 18 months ageing in 100% French oak barrels and finally the wine was lightly filtered prior to bottling. (6 x 75 cl)

Brokenwood GRAVEYARD VINEYARD Shiraz Hunter Valley New South Wales
Description: The Graveyard Vineyard’is the jewel in the Brokenwood crown, responsible for the company's flagship wine. The 14 hectare vineyard was initially planted with Shiraz vines in 1970. With extremely heavy clay soils, yields are low, but fruit flavour is intense through employment of meticulous vinification techniques. It has lifted aromas of dark cherry, clove and ‘sweet’ earth. These are complimented by soft mocha oak and flavours of dark chocolate, plums and spice/pepper characters. The tannins are ripe with a dry, cedar edge. There is a perfect weight of fruit, alcohol and tannin. Established in 1970, Brokenwood Wines has evolved from a weekend venture for self-professed hobby winemakers into one of Australia’s most reputable wine labels. (6 x 75 cl)

Bremerton MATILDA PLAINS Cabernet Shiraz Merlot Langhorne Creek South Australia
Description: Matilda Plains is an exciting new range from the Bremerton stable. Bremerton is a small family owned winery in the prestigious Langhorne Creek region of South Australia. The Bremerton story began in 1985 when Craig and Mignonne Willson purchased the property and established a long term restoration and development plan. The winery was established in 1988 and now has 110 acres planted at Langhorne Creek and is joint owner and manager of another 180 acres from which it selects the best fruit each year for its wines. The winemaking team headed by family member and winemaker Rebecca Willson has taken the quality of the wines to new standards. Rebecca seeks the best possible fruit from the Bremerton Estate and other specialised Langhorne Creek vineyards to craft traditional, full bodied, full flavoured, mouth filling Langhorne Creek wines that show a consistency of style whilst encouraging the true varietal grape characteristics to be expressed. Matilda Plains provides a modern, unique, and delicious range of wines. The distinctive label features the Willson family's much loved border collie Matilda helping in the vineyard.
