The Merlot Grapes, sourced exclusively from Riverland and Sunraysia, were harvested at night to ensure retention of the maximum freshness and fruit flavours. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, a portion of the blend was exposed to oak which gives an added dimension of spiciness to marry with the plummy fruit and soft tannins, so typical of the merlot grape. Jackson Wine Estates ATALON MOUNTAIN ESTATES Merlot Napa Valley California
Description: Thomas Peffer Atalon Winemaker considered: 'The Mountain Estates Merlot captures the bold expression of fruit farmed on mountain vineyard sites. The mountain mesoclimate, created by higher altitude, steep terrain and rocky soils, restricts vine growth and naturally limits vigor. As a result the vines yield fewer berry clusters which are smaller in size with thick skins and boast saturated, intense flavours. 'This a serious Merlot that offers extreme drinking pleasure. It exhibits aromas of black fruit with mineral and smoky cedar spice notes. Rich and intense, the wine is framed by sturdy yet balanced tannins, lush viscosity and flavours of chocolate, black fruit and cherries with a hint of ripe plum in the background.' Part of Jackson Wine Estates Atalon has emerged on the wine scene with a provenance firmly rooted in the Napa Valley. The soul of the Atalon story is a ghost winery dating back to 1888. Built by General W.S. Keyes, the white-stone building atop Howell Mountain claims a stake in Napa Valley viticultural lore. At the turn of the twentieth century, General Keyes was producing wines considered to be among the best in Napa County from this old landmark. From the 1970's the Cabernet Sauvignon vines surrounding the winery helped to establish the reputation of several boutique Napa wineries, including Liparita, Duckhorn and La Jota. In 1996 the famed Howell Mountain property was renamed the Keyes Vineyard in honor of the early farmer's pioneering viticultural contributions. Today, the historic ghost winery stands as a strong reminder of a 150-year old tradition of growing wine grapes within the thirty-mile stretch of the Napa Valley frontier. In 1997, Atalon was created to revive the vineyard's past accomplishments and to build on the area's reputation for producing remarkable red wines. Although inspired by ghosts long gone, Atalon wines reflect a modern understanding of farming Napa's rugged mountains and valleys for the most balanced and expressive wines. To integrate the diverse flavors found throughout the Napa Valley, the wines take us beyond the ridges of Howell Mountain into the broader domain of neighboring appellations. Atalon wines are a comprehensive exploration of the Napa Valley appellation. Drawing fruit from selected vineyards, the wines are a composite of vineyards stretching from the rolling hills of Napa-Carneros in the south to the peaks of Howell Mountain in the north. Atalon is dedicated to the true essence and flavor of the Napa Valley, a distinction defined by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vineyards are chosen for proven quality from the best known districts known to grow high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, including Oakville, Rutherford, Mount Veeder, Atlas Peak, Napa Carneros and Howell Mountain. Atalon produces two tiers of wine: a Napa Valley designated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a Mountain Estate designated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Napa Valley wines are packed with ripe, opulent fruit, gentle tannins and rich textures long associated with the Napa Valley. The Mountain Estate wines are focused expressions of mountain fruit (12 x 75 cl)

Vidal Estate Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon Hawke's Bay NZ
Description: Vidal Wines, founded in 1905, is one of Hawke's Bays oldest boutique wineries, and is a producer of premium quality wines that truly reflect the region and vineyards from which they were sourced. Vidal Wines gained its name from its founder, Anthony Joseph Vidal. He was 22 years old when he arrived in New Zealand from Spain in 1888. He moved North to Hawke's Bay where in 1905 he purchased a small property in Hastings. Once the stables that occupied the site were converted into a cellar, Anthony set about planting some grapevines. Thereafter, success lead to expansion with further vineyard plantings in Te Awanga and then Te Mata. Passing from family memebr to family member, the Vidal family made a decision to sell in the early 1970's and for a while the winery experienced some instability. This changed in 1976 when George Fistonich bought the winery and began to steadily restore the Vidal reputation as a quality wine producer. This Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon also has a small proportion of Malbec in the blend. Overall the wine has spicy plum and tobacco aromas which lead into a palate that shows rich Merlot and Malbec black plum and red berry-fruit characters. While young, the tannins will be firm and fine-grained but will soften over time. (6 x 75 cl)

Vidal Estate Merlot Hawke's Bay NZ
Description: Plum, tobacco and smoky aromas lead into a palate that shows black cherry and red berry-fruit characters with a finely balanced acidity. While young, the tannins will be firm and fine-grained but will soften over time. Fruit from three Hawke's Bay vineyards was harvested and fermented in small batches to maximise blending options. The grapes were completely destemmed then fermented on skins to extract colour and tannin. The wine is left to macerate up to four weeks on skin, the batches were then pressed and run to the cellars to mature in French and American oak barriques for 14 months. This has allowed a slow integration of oak as well as an evolution and softening of tannins. The individual wines were then assessed and blended to maximise varietal and site characteristics. Dal Zotto King Valley Merlot Victoria Australia
Description: An attractive nose of ripe berry fruit leads to a palate exhibiting soft berry fruit with good firm tannins and vanilla oak overtones. The wine lingers in your mouth with a persistent dry finish. Merlot is a variety that softens quickly and 2 to 3 years in bottle would produce a soft mellow red. The style is light with excellent fruity aromas and flavours that still maintains a good tannic structure. Dal Zotto Estate Winery is located in the King Valley in the north of Victoria not far from the Great Murray River which forms the border between Victoria and New South Wales. The valley was settled by Italian Immigrants who were drawn initially to the rich soils for farming, but in the 1970’s Otto Dal Zotto decided to develop his passion for traditional wine-making. It is one of the few wineries in the King Valley still family owned and operated. Otto along with his eldest son Michael are responsible for the winemaking duties; the youngest son Christian looks after the selling and distribution. Middle son Julian is the viticulturist and he has a simple philosophy when in the vineyard -you can't make good wine with bad fruit- the result is a great range of food friendly wines that are approachable and have a distinct style. They are in a small group of wineries pioneering the cultivation of Italian wine varietals in Australia (12 x 75 cl)

Windowrie THE MILL Cabernet Merlot Cowra New South Wales Australia
Description: The Mill Cabernet Merlot is an excellent example of the harmony these varietals can exhibit when blended. The colour is deep berry red and has aromas of fruit, spice and American Oak. The palate displays soft integrated oak with concentrated fruit and soft lingering finish. Growing Season The Cabernet fruit in this wine is sourced from the oldest vines on the estate. The vines are hand pruned in winter to ensure a small crop load while allowing sunlight into the canopy. The vines are then trained during the growing season with a bunch thinning occurring. The Cabernet was picked ripe in early April . The Merlot portion is also sourced from old vines trained to a Scott Henry Trellis System. Restricted Irrigation led to yield of 2.5t acre. The fruit was harvested in mid March. Winemaking The Cabernet and Merlot portions are both made separately until final blending which took place in February . The final blend contained 86% Cabernet and 14% Merlot. Both the Cabernet and Merlot were fermented in small open fermenters following crushing with the rollers open. The ferment was seeded with Bordeaux red yeast and maintained at 25-30ºC. Following ferment the wine was transferred to 2, 3 and 4 year old French and American barriques. The wine was racked every two months before final blending and bottling. (12 x 75 cl)
