Description: One of Australia's finest explorers, Sir Douglas Mawson inspired the world with his courage and heroic feats and Yalumba was proud to be a sponsor of Mawson's pioneering Antarctic expeditions in 1911-14. In honour of the winery's historic association with this great Australian hero, Yalumba has released Mawson's, a range of wines that reflect the spirit of this great adventurer. Yalumba have been growing Sauvignon Blanc at Wrattonbully since the vineyards were first planted in the mid 1990s. Every year the fruit has showed vibrant and intense flavours and characters that they look for in the variety and this vintage lives up to this. Very pale straw in colour with lively green tinges, this Sauvignon Blanc is showing a very fresh canned pea and cut grass aromas, with a touch of fragrant spice and hints of nettle leaf. The palate offers layers of lemons and fresh cut herb flavours with long, flinty textures, while it finishes with lingering flavours and a zesty natural acidity.

Yalumba THE OCTAVIOUS Old Vine Shiraz Barossa Valley
Description: Yalumba 'The Octavius' has established a reputation as one of Australia's icon Shiraz wines, an amazing feat considering the first release was the 1990 vintage. Yalumba's The Octavius was once again sourced from dry grown old bushvines that produced low crops of intensely rich and powerful Shiraz fruit. The resulting wine is dense red in colour with a complex nose of spice, pepper, fruitcake, coffee bean, violet and vanillin toasty oak. The palate is truly intense with concentrated layers of plum, licorice and black olives balanced by fine-grained tannins. This wine will see through to the long term and has at least 10 years of cellaring potential. In addition to being sourced from a number of very old vineyards in the Barossa, The Octavius is matured in American oak 'octaves' of only 90 litres capacity. It is the only red wine in the world that is matured in such small barrels. The secret of the wine not becoming overpowered by the oak, is that the oak used is seasoned at Yalumba for eight years before the octaves are crafted. Yalumba is one of a select few wineries in the world who boast their own coopers practising the ancient craft of barrel making. (6 x 75 cl)

Yalumba THE MENZIES Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
Description: The Yalumba The Menzies 1999 is a rich and intense Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The colour is dense red with purple hues. The nose sees herbaceous characters intertwine with red currant, dark chocolate and spicy French oak. On the palate, dark cherry and liquorice flavours are balanced by fine-grained tannins. The complex structure of this wine allows a cellaring potential of 7-10 years. Grapes were hand picked and fermented in open top stainless fermenters using the Yalumba designed cap plunger to control colour and phenolic extraction prior to maturation in fine French oak. Since its inaugural vintage in 1987, "The Menzies", named after Sir Robert Menzies, politician and red wine enthusiast, has continued to grow in stature and quality. (6 x 75 cl)
