Rijks Private Cellar Shiraz Tulbagh RSA
Description: Shiraz complex nose showing aromas ranging from black pepper, liquorice to black current which all blends in on a well balanced full bodied palate. A firm but smooth tannin structure through to the finish. The fruit was night harvested and hand picked to retain the Chardonnay character. Once in the winery the Shiraz grapes were cold soaked for 2 days while malolactic fermentation occurred in barrels. Finally, the wine was aged 16 months in 30% new, 20% 2nd fill, 10% 3rd fill american oak, as well as 30% new and 20% 2nd fill french barrels. After working in Cape Town for 20 years, Neville Dorrington and his family decided it was time to move to the country. Lovers of good food and collectors of good wines, the search for a wine farm began. Months and miles later, it was decided to buy an undeveloped farm. They fell in love with the Tulbagh valley and the splendour and scenic beauty of the Tulbagh valley is hard to beat. One hour from Cape Town Tulbagh is part of a little valley that lies in a fertile basin almost completely surrounded by the majestic Winterhoek and Witzenberg mountains, often snow-capped in winter. Here the Klein Berg River snakes its way across the valley floor, providing ample water for irrigation. The town was named after Rijk Tulbagh, governor of the Cape from 1751 to 1771. Steeped in history, the beautiful Church Street has 32 National Monuments, more than any other street in South Africa. In honour of Rijk Tulbagh, it was decided by Neville Dorrington to name the farm Rijk's Private Cellar. The farm was found with 136 hectares of virgin soils that had not ever been cultivated before. The slopes facing north, south, east and west also has exellent drainage and sufficient water. Soil tests were done and it was perfect for low yielding high quality grapes. The offer to purchase was accepted and then the Challenge began. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £227.14

Stellar Winery HEAVEN ON EARTH Western Cape South Africa
Description: This wine comes from the Western Cape is the only area in the world where Rooibos tea, known since the time of the San for its medicinal properties, can be cultivated. It seemed only natural to combine the South African sun with ripe locally called Hanepoot grapes on a bed of organic Rooibos tea. During the drying of the grapes on straw and Rooibos tea, the fragrance of the Rooibos has infused the grapes. Next gathered the grapes are put through the crusher and destemmer. Next the fruit is soaked in its own juice, at low temperature, to re-hydrate the more raisined berries. The mash was then pressed and is being fermented in barrels until the yeast can go no further. Stellar Winery is situated 275 km north of Cape Town on the road to Namibia. The winery makes use of a semi-arid climate, unrivalled refrigeration capacity and extensive in-house engineering skills to produce modern, Fairtrade organic wines. Stellar Winery was the first organic vineyard and cellar operation to receive the highly sought after Fairtrade accreditation. Fairtrade companies undertake to empower economically disadvantaged workers and ensure that a fair price is paid for the product along the whole supply chain. Stellar Winery undertakes a big commitment with both farm and cellar staff transported to and from work, while families receive health care and the permanent services of a community worker. Workers receive free housing, electricity and water as well as subsidised schooling and child-care facilities. Finally, a percentage of the wholesale price of the wine is paid directly back to the Stellar Fairtrade Workers' Trust. The wine is made in the sparsely populated Namaqualand region and does not suffer the light pollution that plagues urban areas around the world. The dark nights and clean air result in a breathtaking cosmic display with the aptly-named Milky Way at its centre and the producer pays homage to this phenomenon with the Stellar Range. The wines are assembled from different farms, ferments and yeasts. Each wine in the blend starts with deep colour and ripe fruit and tannins. Individual nuances arise from organic agriculture, saline irrigation water, cooling afternoon winds, wild ferments and other still-to-be-discovered influences. Lightly wooded for structure rather than flavour, these wines offer a tasting experience that will provide a convincing argument for the ascendancy of organic over conventional wines. Available in 37.5 cl Half Bottles. (12 x 37.5 cl) Price: £91.41

Lanzerac Estate Stellenbosch Merlot RSA
Description: The vineyards of Lanzerac are to be found in the quiet and utterly serene surroundings of the Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It was here that in 1958, following the French practice of combining wine farm and country hotel, that the Lanzerac homestead was transformed into a luxury manor. More recently, in 1991, South African businessman Christo Wiese purchased the Lanzerac farm and set about renovating the homestead and its land. In the process, the Lanzerac Manor and Winery was restored to its former glory as one of the region's most distinguished examples of Cape Dutch architecture. Wynand Hamman was appointed as winemaker and immediately set about replanting the vineyards and building a truly modern cellar. All wines are therefore made, bottled and produced on the 155 hectare country estate. Although this limits production capacity, it assists winemaker Wynand Hamman in concentrating on growing the right varieties for our unique terroir and to handle the fruit and wines with greater care and respect. Due to this quality-orientated policy we have helped pioneer the noble white varieties in South Africa and are proud to have received various national and international awards and accolades for our efforts. This Merlot has a deep and dark red colour while on the nose the wine shows the typical varietal flavours of blackberry, plum, chocolate and fresh cream. A slight hint of vanilla from the wood also shows on the nose. The wine is well balanced with a good tannin structure and the fruit-flavours give a lingering aftertaste followed by a slight oakiness. Rustenberg BRAMPTON Sauvignon Blanc Stellenbosch RSA
Description: Brampton is a range of wines from Rustenberg that are more fruit driven in a new world style than the classic Rustenberg range. The Brampton name comes from Brampton Beacon Bloomer, the Jersey Bull, whose porgeny form part of the famous Jersey herd that roam the Rustenberg estate. During the last few years Rustenberg have transformed themselves from a distinguished producer on the local scene to a new era South African standard setter on the international stage. Continual vineyard improvements, a new winery, tasting and storage facility and one of the Cape's hottest young winemakers in Adi Badenhorst, are all driven by owner Simon Barlow's vision of 'absolute passion and total dedication to quality in both the vineyard and cellar'. Handpicked and chilled overnight once the grapes arrive in the winery, the fruit is then crushed, destemmed and pressed to tank, while some batches submitted to skin contact for 6-8 hours. Cool Fermentation is undertaken for 3-4 weeks in stainless steel tanks, to retain prodigious fruit character, the wine is then blended and stabilised before bottling. A zesty upfront wine in true New World style. Passionfruit, Gooseberry, Litchi and Asparagus aromas follow through to a full, lively palate. The fleshy well-rounded mouthfeel derives from grapes harvested at optimum ripeness. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £44.52
