Fairview LA BERYL BLANCCheninBlanc Paarl RSA
Description: The La Beryl Blanc from Fairview was produced from hand harvested CheninBlanc and Semillon. Charles Back added Semillon to the blend this year to add complexity to the CheninBlanc. The grapes were delicately laid out on beds of straw to desiccate. Eventually the bunches lost about 75% of their volume, intensifying the flavour and sweetness of the berries. The grapes were gently pressed and the juice fermented in French oak barrels. This sweet Chenin is rich yet balanced, and offers superb value for a sweet wine of this quality. Fairview is situated on the lower slopes of Mt. Paarl, the mountain that gives its name to this warm region, which is more sheltered from the moderating maritime influence than nearby Stellenbosch. Fairview has been planted with vines since 1699, when it was known by the name of Bloemkwoolfontein . Fortunately, its name was changed to Fairview by an English owner at the beginning of the 20th century. The property was bought by the grandfather of current owner, Charles Back, in 1937, and was subsequently run by his father, Cyril. Charles has run it for the past 25 years. ''I've spent most of that time in search of a style I'm happy with,'' says Fairview's driving force Charles Back. ''I'm happy that we're now getting plush fruit but with good grip, so better balanced wines.'' (6 x 50 cl) Price: £68.71

La Cave Du Vin Blanc De Morgex Et De La Salle RAYON Blanc Vallee D'Aosta DOC
Description: The region of Valle d'Aosta has an ancient history of winemaking, even though the steep mountain slopes and harsh, cold climate might suggest otherwise. Historically however, wine production from the region was confined to individual 'backyard vineyards' of usually no more than 2,500 square meters. In 1983, thanks in part to the efforts of the region's local government, these efforts were officially acknowledged and the Cooperative estate, Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle, was born. This cooperative took control of its newly built winery, well-equipped with all the technology needed to produce high-quality fine wines and began producing the region's traditional wine varieties. The local growers of the co-op are for the most part retired persons who tend their vines as they would a garden, following specific guidelines set up by the cooperative itself. Today the Cave du Vin Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle produces over 140,000 bottles annually of 5 different traditional Valle D'Aosta wines. This unfailing commitment to the Valle D'Aosta wine-making has literally saved the region's history and culture from extinction, making these beautiful wines, and a part of Valle D'Aosta's culture. 100% Prie Blanc and fermented in Stainless Steel is a cloudy yellow coloured wine with greenish reflections. Showing Floral, banana, citrus aromas it has fresh acidity and a long finish. (12 x 75 cl) Price: £151.77
