Les Vins De Vienne Condrieu Description: Yves Cuilleron, Pierre Gaillard and François Villard, highly experienced Rhone Vignerons to a man, have resurrected the ancient area of Seyssuel, planting their first vines in February 1996 and breathing life back into an area that was producing quality wines for the Romans. The plots were chosen on schist soil with a Southern exposure, which were re-claimed and planted with the traditional varietals, Syrah and Viogner, around the Archbishop’s castle at Vienne. These hillside plots had fallen into neglect during the mid 20th century, when the cost of maintaining low yielding vines by hand was prohibitive. This wine is sourced from 93 hectares of steeply sloping hillsides that must be maintained by hand, the terraces have a Southeasterly aspect. The soil is granitic and rich in mica and the climate is of a moderate continental nature. Vinification is in French oak casks with a controlled temperature, where alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes place. Ageing is for 9 months in barrel on the lees with regular stirring, and there is a light filtration before bottling. This Viognier is powerfully aromatic and sensuously ripe on the nose, offering apricot, peach and floral aromas. On the palate the wine is soft and succulent with a creamy mouthfeel to its apricot, honeysuckle and grapefruit flavours. Fresh acidity and a clean, dry finish add a vivacity to balance its weight and concentration well into the lengthy finish.
