The winery was purchased in 1964 by Peter Newton who took the 50 acres of grapevines, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and added Chardonnay and Merlot unproven varietals at the time. This move was highly successful and today the Sterling Vineyards stretches across 1200 acres of prime Napa Valley vineyards. Dominated by Merlot this wine also has a little Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The grapes were fermented separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel with selected yeast strains. Malolactic fermentation followed in upright Oak tanks, after which the wines were aged for an average of 12 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Finally, the wine was lightly fined with eggwhites prior to bottling. A deep purple almost red ruby coloured wine, the nose shows a dense, ripe, full concentration of blackberry jam. Hints of vanilla bean, cinnamon, nutmeg and cedar complement the bright, ripe, lusciously grapey flavours and long full rich finish. (12 x 75 cl)

Collavini MERLOT DAL PIC DOC Collio
Description: In 1896 Eugenio Collavini, the founder, first supplied to the best Udinese's families his wines without ever imagining that a century later they would reach the world over. The top of the hill is the most suitable part of the vineyard: sun, range of temperature and ventilation make up the best atmospheric conditions in order to achieve the perfection of grapes. The name of this wine is derived, according to the Friuli language, from the name of a hill or a mountain summit or 'Pic'. This wine has been produced making use of the typical regional variety of Merlot dal Piduncolo Rosso grapes as well as of Merlot grapes of french origin. The vines used in this wine are between 25 and 30 years old. A deep ruby-red coloured wine it is also showing violet hues, while there is a complex, concentrated and intense scent of blackberry, liquorice and spicy notes that overlap with a delicate vanilla backtaste. The sensations in the mouth enlarge themselves imperiously; the taste seems richly fruity, thick and dense all at once, with delicate and soft tannins. In its final expression it gives off all its refined body developing a heat which overwhelms because of its intensity and balance. Available in Original Wooden Crate. (6 x 75 cl) Price: £136.64
