Description: Poggio Antico is located in Montalcino, a small town in Tuscany about fifty kilometers south of Siena. The earliest written records of the estate date from the beginning of the 19th century, when the present boundaries were marked. At that time, the estate consisted of woodland, grassland, and three stone houses. The development of Poggio Antico started in the late 1970s, when electricity was brought in, vineyards were planted, and construction of the wine cellar began. The estate was purchased in 1984 by current owners Giancarlo and Nuccia Gloder, originally from Milan, who had fallen in love with the wines of Montalcino and the unique geographical position of Poggio Antico. These are exciting times for Poggio Antico with the release of Madre a brand new 'Supertuscan' red wine produced by Poggio Antico. Its first vintage, 2001, received a very positive reception at the preview presentation at Vinitaly in Verona in April 2003. The name 'Madre' comes from the homonymous property, which has always been part of the Poggio Antico estate. This location is facing south-southwest and it is well protected from the northern winds and consequently from the risk of late frosts. Its position (6 x 75 cl)

Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino RISERVA DOCG
As per the D.O.C.G. regulations, Brunello di Montalcino Riserva must be aged for a total of five years as opposed to four required for the regular Brunello, while the Brunello Riserva Poggio Antico is only produced in exceptional vintages. In those years the grapes from the oldest and lowest altitude vineyard are processed and aged separately. The Poggio Antico Riserva then spends three and a half years in wood; the first year of ageing takes place in 500-liter French tonneaux while the remaining ageing is in new Slavonian oak barrels. The wine is then bottle aged for one and a half years before release to complete the mandatory five years of total ageing. The result is a mature, round and complex wine. The rather limited production of Brunello Riserva usually averages 18,000 bottles and due to its characteristics, it is a wine for which further bottle aging is encouraged. The Riserva is an intense ruby red, with garnet hues. Its bouquet is usually evolved and austere, with hints of wild berries, leather, and roasted coffee. In the mouth it has a fully developed rich structure, and is very elegant and smooth thanks to its rich tannins. It is extremely well balanced and rounded, with a persistent silky finish.

The 1980 Brunello di Montalcino was the first wine in Italy to obtain the D.O.C.G. appellation . The D.O.C.G. is the most prestigious classification of wine in Italy. As a result, only specialised and authorised vineyards can produce Brunello di Montalcino and a series of rules regarding production must be observed. Four years of total ageing are required for Brunello. For more than a century Brunello was aged three of these four years in wood, but as from the 1995 vintage this requirement was reduced to two years. Nevertheless, at Poggio Antico they continue to respect the traditional method for our classic Brunello, keeping it three years in large oak barrels. Brunello must be produced with 100% Sangiovese grapes and a minimum of 12.5% alcohol by volume is required. Total acidity cannot be lower than five parts per thousand. At Poggio Antico the alcohol content, total acidity, and dry extract always reach optimum levels, thanks to low yields and the favourable geographical position of its vineyards. Poggio Antico's Brunello di Montalcino is typically deep and intense ruby red in colour. The bouquet is well developed and persistent, and increases in intensity with further bottle ageing. It has a very clean nose, with hints of blackberry and licorice. In the mouth it is rounded and concentrated, with great vitality, yet elegant and harmonious, thanks to the particularly sweet tannins. It has a very long finish and ages gracefully under proper conditions. (12 x 75 cl)

Poggio Antico ALTERO Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Altero was created in 1983 with the intention of making a more modern style of Brunello. Altero is a proprietary wine that is distinguished by being aged in 500-liter French oak tonneaux for a period of two years rather than for three years in the large new Slavonian oak barrels used for the traditional Brunello. Altero completes its ageing requirement by spending two years in the bottle before release. In 2000, sixteen years after the first release of Altero, the new regulations for Brunello confirmed the validity of this innovative alternative. In effect the formula for Altero anticipated the new trend for Brunello. Since its introduction Altero has received very favourable reviews and enjoyed great commercial success, so every year an increasing part of the crop is set aside for it. 100% Sangiovese, Altero is a deep and intense ruby red wine which shows great concentration. The bouquet is wide, very fruity, persistent and elegant while the taste is full, warm, and round with a complex structure and fine ripe tannins. Very smooth on the palate with a long enjoyable finish it is suited for long bottle ageing. (12 x 75 cl)

Terre da Vino LA LUNA e I FALO Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOC Piemonte
Description: Established in 1980, Terre da Vino is an association of vineyard owners from DOC and DOCG estates in Piedmont. With 2,500 wine growers it cultivates more than 4,000 hectares organised into 14 Wine Cooperatives, located in the classic area of production. With a new modern winery and a focus on quality production from the vineyard to the bottle this is an exciting time for Terre da Vino. The grapes come from the classic Barbera area in the comuni of Nizza Monferrato, Agliano Terme, and Clamandrana, all in the province of Asti. This wine is blended from vineyards with slightly different soils and microclimates so that the final wine will offer a better balance between structural solidity and bouquet complexity. The vineyards utilised a total of 60 hectares , and are part of the company's 'Superbarbera' project where the Terre da Vino viticulturists rigerously select vineyard that have low yields and a commitment to quality. Vinification is traditional, with a 15-20 day maceration on the skins and a 28-30oC fermentation, followed quickly by the onset of malolactic. The wine then matures for about 12 months in small oak, about 1/3 new; here, the wine, already impressively structured, acquires a multi-layered depth of flavour and character, evolving into a richly-nuanced Barbera of grace and expressiveness. This wine is a ruby-edge purple with a rich and deep bouquet showing a complex balance of violet, liquorice, and vanilla notes. The palate is crisp and dry, with a subtly-veined background of vanilla and wild berries, which carry through to its lingering finish. (6 x 75 cl)

Terre da Vino IL DIAVOLO SULLE COLLINE Barolo
Description: Established in 1980, Terre da Vino is an association of vineyard owners from DOC and DOCG estates in Piedmont. With 2,500 wine growers it cultivates more than 4,000 hectares organised into 14 Wine Co-operatives, located in the classic area of production. With a new modern winery and a focus on quality production from the vineyard to the bottle this is an exciting time for Terre da Vino. Barolo Chinato debuted in Piedmont at the end of the 19th century and quickly became popular for its reputation as a medicinal wine. The recipe followed for this wine calls for a natural infusion of China Calissaja bark, rhubarb root, and about ten other aromatic herbs. Il Diavolo sulle Colline was named after the book by Cesare Pavese and was chosen to represent the wine's magnificent sensory complexity, power, aromatic pleasures, as well as its profound relationship to the land from which it springs. The Barolo base wine for the 'Il Diavolo sulle Colline' Chinato is produced from grapes of the comuni Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, and Monforte d'Alba, which yield Barolos of pronounced character and structure, to which are added others from the areas of Barolo, La Morra and Verduno, which give wines greater fragrance and elegance. This wine is a deep garnet red colour with a bouquet that is full, rich, heady, and opulent, exuding spices and aromatic herbs. The palate is sweet, full-bodied, velvet-smooth and pleasantly bitterish in the finish. Available in half bottles. (6 x 37.5 cl)
